Book The Early Barth Lectures and Shorter Works

Download or read book The Early Barth Lectures and Shorter Works written by Karl Barth and published by Presbyterian Publishing Corp. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karl Barth was the most influential theologian of the twentieth century, and his work continues to inspire both fresh theological thinking and critical debate. The period covered by the volumes in this series–1905 to 1933 –saw Barth emerge from his training under such theological giants as Adolph von Harnack and Wilhelm Herrmann; assert his rejection of liberal Protestant theology in his towering commentary on Romans; and work through an earlier uncertainty to become a critic on theological grounds of the rise of Nazism. These volumes contain essays, lectures, academic papers, correspondences, editorials, and other writings that were not previously translated into English and that provide insight into the development of Barth's theology during this crucial period of his life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scienti?c progress depends crucially on scienti?c discoveries. Yet the topic of scienti?c discoveries has not been central to debate in the philosophy of science. This book aims to remedy this shortcoming. Based on a broad reading of the term ?science? (similar to the German term ?Wissenschaft ?), the book convenes experts from different disciplines who re?ect upon several intertwined questions connected to the topic of making scienti?c discoveries.0Among these questions are the following: What are the preconditions for making scienti?c discoveries? What is it that we (have to) do when we make discoveries in science? What are the objects of scienti?c discoveries, how do we name them, and how do scienti?c names function? Do dis-coveries in, say, physics and biology, share an underlying structure, or do they differ from each other in crucial ways? Are other ?elds such as theology and environmental studies loci of scienti?c discovery? What is the purpose of making scienti?c discoveries? Explaining nature or reality? Increasing scienti?c knowledge? Finding new truths? If so, how can we account for instructive blunders and serendipities in science?0In the light of the above, the following is an encompassing question of the book: What does it mean to make a discovery in science, and how can scienti?c discoveries be distinguished from non-scienti?c discoveries?

Download or read book Migration Histories of the Medieval Afroeurasian Transition Zone written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The transition zone between Africa, Asia and Europe was the most important intersection of human mobility in the medieval period. The present volume for the first time systematically covers migration histories of the regions between the Mediterranean and Central Asia and between Eastern Europe and the Indian Ocean in the centuries from Late Antiquity up to the early modern era. Within this framework, specialists from Byzantine, Islamic, Medieval and African history provide detailed analyses of specific regions and groups of migrants, both elites and non-elites as well as voluntary and involuntary. Thereby, also current debates of migration studies are enriched with a new dimension of deep historical time. Contributors are: Alexander Beihammer, Lutz Berger, Florin Curta, Charalampos Gasparis, George Hatke, Dirk Hoerder, Johannes Koder, Johannes Preiser-Kapeller, Lucian Reinfandt, Youval Rotman, Yannis Stouraitis, Panayiotis Theodoropoulos, and Myriam Wissa.

Download or read book Divine Diagrams written by Berthold Kress and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 622 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the Reformation the successful painter Paul Lautensack (1477/78-1558) dedicated himself to spreading revelations on the nature of God. Lautensack was besides Dürer the only German artist who wrote against the iconoclasts, and he believed that he as a painter could explain the images of Revelation better than theologians like Luther. He presented his insights in hundreds of highly sophisticated diagrams that display a wide range of material accessible to an urban craftsman, from the vernacular Bible to calendar illustrations. This study is the first monograph on this extraordinary man, it presents a corpus of his surviving works, analyzes his peculiar theology of the image and locates the elements of his diagrams in the visual world of the Reformation period.
