Book excerpt: This translation and introduction is intended to fill a crucial void in German literary and linguistic scholarship by 1) making the play available to an English-speaking audience; 2) examining its origins, development, staging, and unique contributions to the genre; and 3) providing a companion text for students of late Middle High German. The Alsfeld Passion Play represents the culmination, and perhaps the most complex stage of development of the German Passion Play tradition. The Alsfeld play was a three-day play, with performances in 1501, 1511, and 1517. With roles for 188 players it was presented on the open market square, and was conspicuous for its extensive devils' scenes, portrayal of Mary Magdalene before her conversion, and lengthy disputation scenes. At present there are no known translations of the Alsfeld play, in modern German or in English. The original manuscript, preserved at the Landesbibliothek in Kassel, contains 8095 lines of dialogue along with incipits, stage directions, and a rich variety of liturgical songs. Theatre practitioners and cultural innovators such as translators Harley Granville Barker, William Archer and Jacob Thomas Grein, amongst others, laid the foundations during this period for - what is now regarded to be - modern British theatre. In this groundbreaking work, Katja Krebs offers one of the first extended attempts to integrate translation history with theatre history by analyzing the relationship between translational practice and the development of domestic dramatic tradition. She examines the relationship between the multiple roles inhabited by these cultural and theatrical reformers - directors, playwrights, critics, actors and translators - and their positioning in a wider social and cultural context. Here, she takes into consideration the translators as members of an artistic network or community, the ideological and personal factors underlying translational choices, the contemporaneous evaluative framework within which this translational activity for the stage occurred, as well as the imprints of social and cultural traces within specific translated texts. Krebs employs the examples from this period in order to raise a series of wider issues on translating dramatic texts which are important to a variety of periods and cultures. Cultural Dissemination and Translational Communities demonstrates that an analysis of stage-translational practices allows for an understanding of theatre history that avoids being narrowly national and instead embraces an appreciation of cultural hybridity. The importance of translational activity in the construction of a domestic dramatic tradition is demonstrated within a framework of interdisciplinarity that enhances our understanding of theatrical, translational as well as cultural and social systems at the international level.

Book excerpt: How do the first tragic plays of Andreas Gryphius (1616-1664) shed light on today's political unrest and religious controversies in the Middle East and the Caucasus? Frequent updates remind us that revolt, imprisonment, torture, execution, and beheading still transpire in these regions. Such reports unveil remarkable parallels to the shocking and detailed accounts offered by Gryphius in his first two tragedies. The neighboring powers of Iran, Russia, and Turkey continue to exert influence on nearby minor states. Regional conflict among religions and between forces vying for political power remains the same today as during the lifetime of Gryphius. Such discord also triggered the earlier historic events he drew upon in his tragedies to proclaim the vanity of a transitory world. His plays explore the themes of justice, both human and divine, and conflict in politics, religion, and society as revealed through the destinies of specific historic characters. They voice the tragic continuum of human folly. In 1646 Gryphius selected a remarkable historic event from the year 820, the murder of the Byzantine emperor Leo Armenius, for his first tragedy. His second tragedy, Catharine of Georgia, depicts the 1624 execution of the Georgian queen at the command of Shah Abbas I of Persia. Although these tragedies recapture events occurring eight hundred years apart, both deal with issues very familiar to contemporaries of Gryphius. Now, yet another four hundred years later, these regional problems continue to threaten world peace and stability. Because these issues underlie current news reports that reach us daily, the historical tragedies of Gryphius remain contemporary and compelling. The Stackhouse translations introduce a new reading audience to the first tragedies by the father of German drama. Although many important European works have become accessible internationally in English translation, the gems of German baroque drama have remained unavailable to non-readers of German until now. The time is ripe for Gryphius to emerge from the wings and appear on the stage of world drama!
