Book excerpt: Excerpt from German, Flemish and Dutch Painting The painters of Germany and the Netherlands provide for the English Art-Student a field of study no less interesting than that furnished by the celebrated Italian Masters. In Germany - after a school of painters who worked with a deep and honest purpose but with no immense genius - Art, in the persons of Dürer and Holbein, made an advance of incomparable importance; and owing to the fact that Holbein spent many of his best years in England, and here painted a large number of his finest works, we have an additional reason for a careful study of the great German Renaissance. After these masters and their immediate disciples, Art gradually declined in the hands of such copyists as Mengs who was nothing better than a feeble imitator of Michelangelo, and of Denner who smothered Art by his excessive elaboration. The later revival under Cornelius and Overbeck, if it does not arouse enthusiasm, at least commands respect and admiration. The early schools of Holland and Flanders were so closely allied that it is difficult to divide their honours. To the Van Eycks of Bruges is due the discovery of an improved method of using oil as a vehicle in painting, and they and their followers have never been surpassed in technical excellence. Then followed Matsys and the early school of Antwerp, and after him came the decline, hastened by over-wrought composition and a futile straining after the style of the Italians. This decline was happily checked by the advent of Rubens, the Titian of the North, whose Art is manly, although it does not possess the idealism or religious sentiment of Italy, or even of the early Flemings. With his greatest pupil, Van Dyck, all Englishmen are familiar, and indeed this country has an almost equal claim with Flanders to rank him among her painters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Painting, Vol. 2 of 2: German, Flemish, and Dutch Schools Harmony of colour - was seen for the first time developed in the utmost perfection, while the other great qualities of general keeping, Chiaroscuro, and that treatment of the brush - not lost, as formerly, in a fused surface, but employed for purposes of modelling - found ready response in their art-sympathies. As regards the class of subjects also available for the treatment of art a proportionable change had taken place. To the Van Eycks and their school the deep religious feeling of their time had chie y appealed for expression, and only occasionally did other subjects find admittance into the atelier. Now in all countries which had adopted the Reformation in its stricter forms - such as Holland, Switzerland, and parts of Germany - the Church had entirely abolished the services of art. In Catholic lands, it is true, a new religious impulse had found birth towards the close of the sixteenth and in the first half of the seventeenth century, but even there the invention of printing had robbed the artist of what in the middle ages had been his most important function, that of imparting instruction to the laity. Endowed, however, as art was by that time with all the powers of representation, she still sought to devote herself to the glorification of religion. On the other hand, 'in the more general diffusion of knowledge, other classes of sub jects, such as mythology and profane history, etc., could no longer be excluded from the painter's mind; thus the very power to devote himself solely to the contemplation of religious themes became sensibly diminished. A large por tion of his interest, therefore, was absorbed by the forms of representation which then obtained favour with the world, and especially by those far-fetched allegorical scenes which sought to embody, in a cold and artificial form, the learn ing of the day. In Belgium even, which had remained Catholic, many painters devoted themselves to subject and landscape painting. At the same time these branches of art, including the study of animals and owers, played at all times a subordinate part in that country, and the smal number of painters who cultivated them belong especially to the earlier division of this period. Since the remarkable Exhibition held at Bruges in 1902 the early Flemish painters in particular have been subjected to the most careful and critical examination, and much that was before cloudy and vague has been defined, while many new problems have arisen. No attempt has been made in this volume to enter upon the more controversial aspects of the subject. The vexed question of attributions is after all of secondary importance to the intrinsic beauty of the pictures.
