Book Shock Biochemical Pharmacological and Clinical Aspects

Download or read book Shock Biochemical Pharmacological and Clinical Aspects written by Aldo Bertelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few pathologie phenomena, as shock, can originate from so many causes and involve so many complex physiologie mechanisms: The complexity of the phenomenon, thus, has resulted in extensive study and raised many uncertainties. Different conditions, such as hemorrhage, trauma, burns, bacterial infection, and anaphylaxis, can cause a shock state which initiates a chain of biochemical events that tends to maintain the shock. Recent progress in bio chemistry, physiology, and pharmacology has tended to clarify this chain of events, and elucidate the possible trigger mechanism. Besides the hormonal and catecholamine involvement, the possible intervention of various protease and lysosomal enzyme septems and kinin release introduces new elements into the characteristic mosaic of the shock state. This International Symposium, organized at Lake Corno by the Italian Society of Clinical Pharmacology and the International Society of Biochemical Pharmacology, is another in aseries of symposia under the joint auspices of the School of Pharmacy, State University of New York at Buffalo, and the Institute of Pharma cology, University of Milan, Italy. The Symposium has gathered together eminent scientists from such varied disciplines as surgery and pharmacology, internal medicine and biochemistry, physiology and pathology, all focusing on the question of shock. The many researchers in these specialities had the possibility of meeting and discussing together in a multidisciplinary fashion the many theories and experiences associated with this problem.

Book Morphological and Functional Aspects of Immunity

Download or read book Morphological and Functional Aspects of Immunity written by K. Lindahl-Kiessling and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third International Conference on Lymphatic Tissue and Germinal Centers in Immune Reactions was held at the University of Uppsala in Sweden, September 1-4, 1970. The conference is obliged to Professor K. E. Fichtelius for his initiative in establishing the meeting, as well as for the assistance of his staff at the Department of Histology in organizing the meetings. At the University of Uppsala inquiries into the lymphatic system go back to the 17th century and are marked by milestones, such as Olof Rudbeck's discovery of the thoracic duct in 1651 and August Hammar's fundamental work on the thymus in the beginning of this century. So one is justified to s~ that the conference gathered on historical ground. The organizing committee, naturally, hopes that the achievements presented at the conference will contribute to and provide significant advances in the history of lymphatic research. The material presented in this volume displ~s a great diversity of methods and the ingenuity of different investigators in their experimental designs. It is also apparent that contemporary research on lymphatic tissues or cells no longer recognizes the artificial borderline of morphologic ve~8U8 functional. It has become a multi disciplinary affair in which an increasing number of different specialists are working closely together. Apparently this is one reason why so many new and important discoveries have been made recently.

Book Metal Ions in Biological Systems

Download or read book Metal Ions in Biological Systems written by Sanat Dhar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles published in this volume are based on the papers del ivered at a conference on the Role of Metal Ions in Biological Systems held November 20 and 21, 1972, at Argonne National Laboratory. The purpose of the conference was to present to an interdiscipl inary audience of physical scientists some recent developments illustrating the chemical and environ mental participation of the heavy metal ions in the biological system. The invited speakers at the conference are special ists in the fields they describe, and the articles presented here are at a level of interest to readers with backgrounds in physical sciences who are not necessari Iy doing research in the areas described. The articles are referenced through 1972, and in some cases early 1973, and thus should also be of value to research workers. It is hoped that the book wi II be of particular interest to chemists, biologists, workers in the fields of en vironmental science and publ ic health, as wei I as graduate and senior undergraduate students in these discipl ines. The conference was sponsored by the Central States Universities, Inc. , a consortium of sixteen midwestern univer sities, the Center for Educational Affairs, Argonne National Laboratory, and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. It is my pleasure to thank the members of the conference committee for their ideas and active help in organizing the conference.

Book Alcohol Intoxication and Withdrawal I

Download or read book Alcohol Intoxication and Withdrawal I written by Milton M. Gross and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-13 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributions to this volume clearly indicate the momentum, quality, liveliness and diversity of the research effort being di rected toward deepening our understanding of tqe alcohol withdrawal syndrome. This area of study has gained increasing interest and attention to the point where it seemed reasonable to devote a spe cial section to it at the 30th International Congress for Alcoholism and Drug Dependence in Amsterdam in September, 1972. Our goal was to share our most recent findings and stimulate others to join in the effort. With few exceptions, the papers in this publication present new data. It had been hoped that the volume would appear by the end of 1972. However, the eagerness of many of the contributors to extend their investigations made this target date impossible. Several of the papers were not presented in the section but were presented elsewhere in the Congress. However, because of their particular relevance to the topic they have been included with the generous consent of the authors.

Book The Dynamics of Meristem Cell Populations

Download or read book The Dynamics of Meristem Cell Populations written by M. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings are composed of three parts: 1) the indi vidual papers, 2) their discussions, and 3) a retrospective summa tion of the meeting's deliberations. If we were to suggest a start ing place for reading it would probably be the summation --it at tempts to place the various papers and discussions into a general context and to point out relevant ideas of current knowledge and of potentially useful avenues for further research. The papers and discussions deal more specifically with the indiviaual topics. It is hoped that the tone and tenor of the meeting are some what reflected in its proceedings. The emphasis today in biological research is quite "ecumenical" in outlook in that often techniques and conclusions from one discipline have relevance and applicability to another. For example, the elucidation of the DNA synthetic stage during interphase was first accomplished with botanical material; this technique has since had a broad and significant role in medical research. Also, the pioneering and now classical studies regarding the effects of ionizing radiation on plant chromosomes were, and still are, the foundation for studying mammalian chromosomes: it re quired only the discovery of a hypotonic medium to achieve spreading of them so that similar types of analyses were possible. Plants and plant cells have many unique features which allow them to be useful either for the study of specific botanical problems, or for studying broad biological principles.

Book Current Topics in Coronary Research

Download or read book Current Topics in Coronary Research written by Colin Bloor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can you adequately honor a man of deeds with mere words? Dr. Donald Eaton Gregg is recognized throughout the scientific world for his distinguished contributions to our knowledge of the coronary circulation, his advances in experimental instrumentation and design, his scientific integrity and his lasting influence on other investigators. His research associates over the years are now liberally scattered over the entire world. Their accomplishments and activities reflect the quality of their training in his Department of Cardiorespiratory Diseases at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. The positions of prestige occupied by these men attest to Dr. Gregg's ability to select and inspire men of talent, yet in his usual modest way he insists that he was only fortunate to be in the right place at the right time. Thus, at the time of Dr. Gregg's retirement as Chief of the Department of Cardiorespiratory Diseases, a position he has held since 1950, his associates thought that a scientific symposium was the most appropriate way to honor a man of his stature. Accordingly, on March 29-30, 1973 a Symposium on Current Topics in Coronary Research was held at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research. Its objectives were to define our present state of knowl edge and, more importantly, define the basic questions requiring further experimentation in four major areas of coronary research, i. e.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OHOLO conferences have been convened annually as from the spring of 1956; they have covered very wide areas from different and overlapping disciplines, as can be seen from the following list: 1956 Bacterial Genetics (not published) 1957 Tissue Cultures in Virological Research (not published) 1958 Inborn and Acquired Resistance to Infection in Animals (not published) 1959 Experimental Approach to Mental Diseases (not published) 1960 Cryptobiotic Stages in Biological Systems* 1961 Virus - Cell Relationships** 1962 Biological Synthesis and Function of Nucleic Acids** 1963 Cellular Control Mechanism of Macromolecular Synthesis** 1964 Molecular Aspects of Immunology** 1965 Cell Surfaces** 1966 Chemistry and Biology of Psychotropic Agents (not published) 1967 Structure and Mode of Action of Enzymes** 1968 Growth and Differentiation of Cells in vitro** 1969 Behaviour of Animal Cells in Culture** 1970 Microbial Toxins** 1971 Interaction of Chemical Agents with Cholinergic Mechanisms** The participants at these meetings from the different scien tific institutions of Israel and from many countries, are engaged in fields of study which represent widely divergent approaches to biology. Thus, a characteristic feature of the OHOLO meetings has been their multi-disciplinary nature. These small international conferences are distinguished by the relaxed atmosphere in which they are held, with ample time for informal as weIl as formal discussions. *Published by Elsevier Publishing Co. , Amsterdam (1960). **Published by the Israel Institute for Biological Research, Ness Ziona.

  • Author : G. Arden
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 1468482319
  • Pages : 330 pages

Download or read book The Visual System written by G. Arden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Society for Clinical Electroretinography provides a link between scientists who are enlarging our understanding of the normal functioning of the visual pathway, and clinicians who investigate and treat visual disturbances. The chief function of the Society is to organise symposia, where, with skill born of long practice, the participants obtain the benefits of both social and scientific contact, without detriment to either. The result ing spread of information is documented both in the society's Newsletter, and by the publication of volumes such as this, the record of the 9th Symposium held at Brighton in 1971. This meeting was a joint Symposium of the ISCERG and the International Union of Physiological Sciences. The subjects covered represent merely the interests of the organisers. The biophysical studies are represented by chapters on such divers topics as the x-ray diffraction of receptor membranes and impedance properties of outer limb suspensions. Other papers deal with the problems of maintaining the retina in vitro in a physiological condition. Papers describing techniques for investigating the functional properties of the visual system shade into those which describe new aspects of human disease. In the past such serendipity has been of value as evidenced by compal-ison between this and previous volumes. In 1965 the physiological section of the Proceedings was largely devoted to a new elec trical response, the evoked potential of the visual cortex.

Book The Artery and the Process of Arteriosclerosis

Download or read book The Artery and the Process of Arteriosclerosis written by Stewart Wolf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the first half of the edited tran script of a six-day Conference, "Fundamental Data on Reactions of Vascular Tissue in Man," held April 19-25, 1970, in Lindau, West Germany. The remainder of the proceedings, dealing with the epide miologic, clinical and preventive aspects of arteriosclerosis, will be published in a second volume. The Conference was held under the auspices of the International Society of Cardiology, the International Cardiology Foundation and the European Atherosclerosis Group. The aim of the Conference was to achieve a synthesis of present knowledge concerning arterioscle rosis. Therefore, workers were brought together from several coun tries and from various disciplines that do not ordinarily intercom municate for free exchange of data and ideas. Six broad subject areas were introduced by single papers; three of them are included in this volume. In the discussion which followed each formal pres entation, the participants attempted to reconcile disparate data and interpretations and to reach .a clear identification of important areas of ignorance and of crucial questions for future research. The format of the proceedings does not follow precisely that of the Conference itself. The formal papers are included, somewhat ab breviated, and excerpts of the discussion have been gathered under a series of topics arranged in logical sequence. Therefore, the quoted statements do not necessarily appear in order or in the place in the program where they were made. Principal issues, syntheses and unanswered questions are interspersed among the topics as edi torial comments.

Book The Reticuloendothelial System and Immune Phenomena

Download or read book The Reticuloendothelial System and Immune Phenomena written by N. Di Luzio and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume represents a portion of the Proceedings of the Sixth International Meeting of the Reticuloendothelial Society. There is little question that the University of Freiburg was a most appropriate choice as the site of the meeting since, in essence, the Society was founded here when Aschoff undertook his classical studies on the macrophage and discovered what may well have been the last remaining biological system. In the approximate fifty years which have elapsed since Aschoff introduced the descriptive term Reticuloendothelial System to unify those cells with the common property of phagocytosis, one finds investigative activity at the highest level in all areas of reticuloendothelial involvement. Indeed, the topics covered in the present volume would of necessity require that the common property of phagocytosis which led to the formulation of the reticuloendothelial system be modified. The common basis at the present is clearly no longer phagocytic expression, but the unifying basis of host defense. The totality of reticuloendothelial involvement in host-defense is clearly reflected by the diverse scientific backgrounds and research interests of the participants of the meeting. Remarkable advances in appreciating the involvement of the RES in maintaining the well-being of the host against a variety of endogenous and exogenous factors have been made since volume I of the Advances in Experimental Biology and Medicine on the reticulo endothelial system was published.
