Book The Distinctive Character of the Free University in Amsterdam 1880 2005

Download or read book The Distinctive Character of the Free University in Amsterdam 1880 2005 written by Arie Theodorus van Deursen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2008-04-17 with total page 557 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Translated by Herbert Donald Morton The central theme of this history is the Free University as a private institution founded to provide Christian higher education. At its founding in 1880, the Vrije University had only five professors and five students. Among the other public universities, it struck an odd figure and seemed destined for failure. Yet founder Abraham Kuyper never wavered in his determination to build a special Reformed, Calvinist university. Arie van Deursen here recounts the engrossing history of this unique university in its 125th year, using fully documented archival sources to detail the school's ups and downs over the years.

Book excerpt: Volumes 10 and 11 of Studies in Reformed Theology consist of the texts written for the fifth international conference of the International Reformed Theological Institute (IRTI), which was dedicated to the theme, 'Christian Faith and Violence'. Specific theological questions were at the core of the discussions, e.g. what does violence imply for the doctrine of God? How to deal with biblical stories and commands that often contain an overwhelmingly violent character? What about applying christian ethics in situations of violence that we are exposed to? What is our calling in situations of oppression and a longing for liberation and justice?

Book The Economy and Politics of the Netherlands Since 1945

Download or read book The Economy and Politics of the Netherlands Since 1945 written by Richard Griffiths and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is relatively little information on The Netherlands written in the English language which is easily accessible to social science students and even less which is systematically assembled between the covers of a single book. This is unfortunate not only because The Netherlands is an important part of Western Europe but because the experience of The Netherlands in the way in which it has attempted to resolve the economic and political problems confronting it may help to shed valuable light on similar issues facing other European countries. The contributions for this volume were chosen with these considerations in mind. On the one hand the selection of topics was intended to provide an overall impression of the political and economic development of The Netherlands since the Second World War. Thus separate chapters are devoted to an examination of economic develop ment; counter-inflation, energy, regional and planning policies; pressure groups, electoral performance, cabinet formation and colonial and Euro pean policies. On the other hand, these areas for investigation were chosen to invite specific contrast with the experience of other European nations or to illustrate certain problems of political or economic theory. It is my pleasure to thank, first of all, the contributors themselves for the conscientious way in which they prepared their drafts which made my task as editor so much easier. Secondly, it will be apparent to even the most casual observer that I have contributed two chapters.

Book Cultures of Conversions

Download or read book Cultures of Conversions written by Jan N. Bremmer and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the terms of Durkheimian sociology, conversion is a fait social. Although they are rarely treated as a cultural phenomenon, conversions can obviously be examined for the norms, values and presuppositions of the cultures in which they take place. Thus conversion can help us to shed light on a particular culture. At the same time, the term evokes a dramatic appeal that suggests a kind of suddenness, although in most cases conversion implies a more gradual process of establishing and defining a new - religious - identity. From 21-24 May, 2003, the University of Groningen hosted an international conference on 'Cultures of Conversion'. The contributions have been edited in two volumes, which pay special attention to the modes of language and idiom in conversion literature, the meaning and sense of religious-ideological discourse, the variety of rhetorical tropes, and the effects of the conversion narrative with allusions to religious or political conventions and idealizations. The present volume offers in-depth studies of conversion that are mainly taken from the history of India, Islam and Judaism, ranging from the Byzantine period to the new Muslimas of the West. The other volume, Paradigms, Poetics and Politics of Conversion, in addition to stimulating case studies, contains theoretical contributions on the theory of conversion, with special attention to the rational choice theory and to the history of research into conversion.

Book excerpt: Dutch Calvinist theologian Herman Bavinck, a significant voice in the development of Protestant theology, remains relevant many years after his death. His four-volume Reformed Dogmatics is one of the most important theological works of the twentieth century. James Eglinton is widely considered to be at the forefront of contemporary interest in Bavinck's life and thought. After spending considerable time in the Netherlands researching Bavinck, Eglinton brings to light a wealth of new insights and previously unpublished documents to offer a definitive biography of this renowned Reformed thinker. The book follows the course of Bavinck's life in a period of dramatic social change, identifying him as an orthodox Calvinist challenged with finding his feet in late modern culture. Based on extensive archival research, this critical biography presents numerous significant and previously ignored or unknown aspects of Bavinck's person and life story. A black-and-white photo insert is included. This volume complements other Baker Academic offerings on Bavinck's theology and ethics, which together have sold 90,000 copies.

Book Family Quarrels in the Dutch Reformed Churches in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Family Quarrels in the Dutch Reformed Churches in the Nineteenth Century written by Robert P. Swierenga and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1999 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 32 in the HSRCA series chronicles the internal quarrels that have occurred in RCA history, particularly the landmark secessions that occurred in 1850, 1857, and 1882. While exploring the unity and disunity that have characterized the RCA since the Dutch immigration to the United States, this study also points out the righteous motivations that lay behind these struggles and shows how these historic quarrels have their counterpart in contemporary debates over the ordination of women and the church's acceptance of homosexuals.
