Download or read book The Emergence of International Society in the 1920s written by Daniel Gorman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-20 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chronicling the emergence of an international society in the 1920s, Daniel Gorman describes how the shock of the First World War gave rise to a broad array of overlapping initiatives in international cooperation. Though national rivalries continued to plague world politics, ordinary citizens and state officials found common causes in politics, religion, culture and sport with peers beyond their borders. The League of Nations, the turn to a less centralized British Empire, the beginning of an international ecumenical movement, international sporting events and audacious plans for the abolition of war all signaled internationalism's growth. State actors played an important role in these developments and were aided by international voluntary organizations, church groups and international networks of academics, athletes, women, pacifists and humanitarian activists. These international networks became the forerunners of international NGOs and global governance.
Download or read book Recollecting written by Sarah Carter and published by Athabasca University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recollecting is a rich collection of essays that illuminate the lives of late eighteenth-century to the mid twentieth-century Aboriginal women, who have been overlooked in sweeping narratives of the history of the West. Some essays focus on individual women - a trader, a performer, a non-human woman - while others examine cohorts of women - wives, midwives, seamstresses, nuns. Authors look beyond the documentary record and standard representations of women, drawing also on records generated by the women themselves, including their beadwork, other material culture, and oral histories.

Download or read book Other Histories written by Kirsten Hastrup and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade of historical anthropology, the discipline seems to be thoroughly historicized. This implies not only that the historical dimension of other cultures has become an integrated part of any anthropological inquiry, but also that the different ways of producing history have become important considerations. Using mainly European historical and ethnographic materials, Other Historiesexamines the nature of history and its importance to anthropological study. The apparently Eurocentric perspective of this volume actually serves the purpose of dismantling the unity and progress of European history. It demonstrates that history is not linear but highly complex, often containing several separate local histories.

Download or read book Corrupt Exchanges written by Donatella Della Porta and published by Nomos Verlagsgesellschaft. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corruption undermines the market and challenges government legitimacy. Its hidden character, however, makes it troublesome to study empirically. Corrupt Exchanges seeks to overcome this difficulty using the tools of economics and political science. The papers, presented at the Zentrum for Interdisziplinäre Forschung in Bielefeld, Germany, in 2001, begin a dialogue across disciplinary lines. The contributors are a first-rate group of scholars using diverse techniques, both qualitative and quantitative. Their work demonstrates that, with patience and creativity, the empirical study of corruption is possible and can contribute to the policy debate. One group of papers deals with high-level political corruption especially involving Member States of the European Union. The second group focuses on bureaucratic corruption in developing and transition countries. The papers study particular instances and types of corruption and suggest solutions. This book will interest to those concerned with limiting corruption worldwide, including the business and the nonprofit communities and international aid and lending organizations. The editors are internationally recognized experts in the study of corruption. Donatella Della Porta is Professor of Political Science at the University of Florence and the author (with Alberto Vannucci) of Corrupt Exchanges (1999). Susan Rose-Ackerman is Professor of Law and Political Science at Yale University and the author of Corruption and Government (1999).

Download or read book Rethinking the 1950s written by Jennifer A. Delton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-10-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historians generally portray the 1950s as a conservative era when anticommunism and the Cold War subverted domestic reform, crushed political dissent, and ended liberal dreams of social democracy. These years, historians tell us, represented a turn to the right, a negation of New Deal liberalism, an end to reform. Jennifer A. Delton argues that, far from subverting the New Deal state, anticommunism and the Cold War enabled, fulfilled, and even surpassed the New Deal's reform agenda. Anticommunism solidified liberal political power and the Cold War justified liberal goals such as jobs creation, corporate regulation, economic redevelopment, and civil rights. She shows how despite President Eisenhower's professed conservativism, he maintained the highest tax rates in U.S. history, expanded New Deal programs, and supported major civil rights reforms.
