Download or read book Groundwater Remediation written by Nicholas P. Cheremisinoff and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-06-13 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the world's foremost authorities on the subject, this is the most comprehensive and in-depth treatment available to environmental engineers and scientists for the remediation of groundwater, one of the earth's most precious resources. Groundwater is one of the Earth's most precious resources. We use it for drinking, bathing, and many other purposes. Without clean water, humans would cease to exist. Unfortunately, because of ignorance or lack of caring, groundwater is often contaminated through industrialization, construction or any number of other ways. It is the job of the environmental engineer to remediate the contaminated groundwater and make what has been tainted safe again.Selecting the proper remediation strategy and process is the key to moving forward, and, once this process has been selected, it must be executed properly, taking into consideration the costs, the type of contaminants that are involved, time frames, and many other factors. This volume provides a broad overview of the current and most widely applied remedial strategies. Instead of discussing these strategies in a generic way, the volume is organized by focusing on major contaminants that are of prime focus to industry and municipal water suppliers. The specific technologies that are applicable to the chemical contaminants discussed in different chapters are presented, but then cross-referenced to other chemical classes or contaminants that are also candidates for the technologies. The reader will also find extensive cost guidance in this volume to assist in developing preliminary cost estimates for capital equipment and operations & maintenance costs, which should be useful in screening strategies. The eight chapters cover all of the major various types of contaminants and their industrial applications, providing a valuable context to each scenario of contamination. This is the most thorough and up-to-date volume available on this important subject, and it is a must-have for any environmental engineer or scientist working in groundwater remediation.

Download or read book Compatibility of Ninth Avenue Superfund Site Ground Water with Two Soil bentonite Slurry Wall Backfill Mixtures written by Mark E. Zappi and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interactions between solutes found in leachates from uncontrolled landfills and components of a soil-bentonite (SB) slurry wall are capable of causing swelling or shrinking slurry wall. The effect of solutes in contaminated ground water from the Ninth Avenue Superfound Site in Gary, IN, on the hydraulic conductivity of two SB slurry wall backfill mixtures was evaluated using rigid-wall permeameters. Ground-water samples taken from three observation wells at the Ninth Avenue site contained solutes that could cause increases in the hydraulic conductivity of an SB slurry wall. One ground-water sampled contained salt concentrations as high as 20,000 mg/l. (jes).

Download or read book Induced Seismicity Potential in Energy Technologies written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-08-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past several years, some energy technologies that inject or extract fluid from the Earth, such as oil and gas development and geothermal energy development, have been found or suspected to cause seismic events, drawing heightened public attention. Although only a very small fraction of injection and extraction activities among the hundreds of thousands of energy development sites in the United States have induced seismicity at levels noticeable to the public, understanding the potential for inducing felt seismic events and for limiting their occurrence and impacts is desirable for state and federal agencies, industry, and the public at large. To better understand, limit, and respond to induced seismic events, work is needed to build robust prediction models, to assess potential hazards, and to help relevant agencies coordinate to address them. Induced Seismicity Potential in Energy Technologies identifies gaps in knowledge and research needed to advance the understanding of induced seismicity; identify gaps in induced seismic hazard assessment methodologies and the research to close those gaps; and assess options for steps toward best practices with regard to energy development and induced seismicity potential.
Download or read book Water Balance Covers for Waste Containment written by William Henry Albright and published by Amer Society of Civil Engineers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents, for the first time in one place, the results of the latest research regarding water balance covers for solid waste sites, along with case studies drawn from current field testing. Water Balance Covers for Waste Containment: Principles and Practice introduces water balance covers and compares them with conventional approaches to waste containment. The authors give detailed analysis of the fundamentals of soil physics and design issues, introduce applicable ecological concepts and revegetation practices, and then move on to construction, modeling, and maintenance. A viable alternative to conventional landfill cover systems, water balance covers (also known as store-and-release and evapotranspiration covers) cycle water from the soil to the atmosphere during growing season, minimizing the percolation of rainwater through the soil, and thus the production of leachate from land fill contents. This book will be valuable to practicing engineers, as well as regulatory analysts.
