Book Using Eighth Grade Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Tests to Predict Student Achievement on the Georgia End of Course Tests

Download or read book Using Eighth Grade Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Tests to Predict Student Achievement on the Georgia End of Course Tests written by Janice Darnell and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this correlational study was to examine Georgia's Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) scores of 8th grade students and End of Course Test (EOCT) scores of the same students as 9th graders in the areas of language arts and mathematics to test the theory that a relationship exists between the two tests. The study also examined the 8th grade CRCT scores as being predictors of the 9th grade EOCT scores. Three cycles, or classes, of 8th grade CRCT scores and corresponding EOCT scores were used. The study used data from a small semi-rural school district in northeast Georgia. The findings indicate that there is a strong relationship between the 8th grade CRCTs and the 9th grade EOCTs. Further, the CRCTs may be used as a predictor for the EOCT.

Book Assessing English Language Learners in the Content Areas

Download or read book Assessing English Language Learners in the Content Areas written by Florin Mihai and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2010-06-11 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assessing English Language Learners in the Content Areas: A Research-into-Practice Guide for Educators seeks to provide guidance to classroom teachers, staff developers, and test-item designers who want to improve ELL assessment outcomes, particularly in the areas of math, science and social studies. The first two chapters of the book establish the background for the discussion of content-area assessment for ELLs, examining several important characteristics of this rapidly growing student population (as well as critical legislation affecting ELLs) and providing a description of various forms of assessment, including how ELL assessment is different from the assessment of English-proficient students. Important assessment principles that educators should use in their evaluation of tests or other forms of measurement are provided. Other chapters review ELL test accommodations nationwide (because, surprisingly, most teachers do not know what they can and cannot allow) and the research on the effectiveness of these types of accommodations. The book analyzes the characteristics of alternative assessment; it discusses three popular alternative assessment instruments (performance assessment, curriculum-based measurement, and portfolios) and makes recommendations as to how to increase the validity, reliability, and practicality of alternative assessments. The book proposes fundamental assessment practices to help content area teachers in their evaluation of their ELL progress.

Book A Comparison of Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Math Scores Between At Risk Fifth Grade Students Receiving Computer Based Math Instruction and At Risk Students Not Receiving Computer Based Math Instruction

Download or read book A Comparison of Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test Math Scores Between At Risk Fifth Grade Students Receiving Computer Based Math Instruction and At Risk Students Not Receiving Computer Based Math Instruction written by Katherine Arnold and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This causal comparative research study compared the mean score differences from two groups of fifth grade students. Both groups were identified at-risk, based on a curriculum based math measure and their 4th grade performance on the state assessment, for failure to meet math standards on the state assessment. The curriculum-based measure in this study was the 2011-12 AIMSweb Mathematic Concepts and Applications (M-CAP). Mathematics achievement was measured by scores on the 2012 math subtest of the Georgia Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). Each group received classroom instruction using Learning Focused Schools (LFS) math strategies. The treatment group received additional computer based math instruction. The computer based math instruction in this study was Individual Prescription for Achieving State Standards (iPASS). A correlation analysis examined the ability of the 2011-12 M-CAP fall cut scores to identify risk status measured by student scores on the 2012 CRCT math subtest. A second correlation analysis examined the predictive ability of the 2011-12 winter M-CAP target scores on the CRCT as indicated by the strength and direction of the relationship. Three research questions were investigated: (a) Is there a difference in the 2012 CRCT math scores between at-risk fifth grade students who participate in computer based math instruction and those who do not? (b) Are the 2011-12 fall M-CAP cut scores able to identify fifth grade students as at-risk to fail the math portion of the 2012 CRCT? (c) Are the 2011-12 winter M-CAP target scores able to predict fifth grade students' performance on the math subtest of the 2012 CRCT? To address these research questions this study first examined the effectiveness of computer based math concepts and applications instruction on student achievement and its viability as an effective intervention for students identified as at-risk to fail end of year state assessments. Secondly, this study investigated the ability of cur

Book Handbook of Test Security

Download or read book Handbook of Test Security written by James A. Wollack and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-02 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High stakes tests are the gatekeepers to many educational and professional goals. As such, the incentive to cheat is high. This Handbook is the first to offer insights from experts within the testing community, psychometricians, and policymakers to identify and develop best practice guidelines for the design of test security systems for a variety of testing genres. Until now this information was scattered and often resided inside testing companies. As a result, rather than being able to learn from each other’s experiences, each testing entity was left to re-create their own test security wheel. As a whole the book provides invaluable insight into the prevalence of cheating and “best practices” for designing security plans, training personnel, and detecting and investigating misconduct, to help develop more secure testing systems and reduce the likelihood of future security breaches. Actual case studies from a variety of settings bring to life how security systems really work. Examples from both domestic and international programs are provided. Highlights of coverage include: • Best practices for designing secure tests • Analysis of security vulnerabilities for all genres of testing • Practical cheating prevention and detection strategies • Lessons learned in actual security violations in high profile testing programs. Part I focuses on how tests are delivered for paper-and-pencil, technology-based, and classroom testing and writing assessment. Each chapter addresses the prevalence of the problem and threats to security, prevention, and detection. Part II addresses issues essential to maintaining a secure testing program such as planning and monitoring, physical security, the detection of group-based cheating, investigating misconduct, and communicating about security-related issues. Part III examines actual examples of cheating-- how the cheating was done, how it was detected, and the lessons learned. Part III provides insight into security issues within each of the Association of Test Publishers’ four divisions: certification/licensure, clinical, educational, and industrial/organizational testing. Part III’s conclusion revisits the issues addressed in the case studies and identifies common themes. Intended for organizations, professionals, educators, policy makers, researchers, and advanced students that design, develop, or use high stakes tests, this book is also ideal for graduate level courses on test development, educational measurement, or educational policy.

Book Real World Professional Learning Communities

Download or read book Real World Professional Learning Communities written by Daisy Arredondo Rucinski and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a professional learning community (PLC), teachers are organized into teams, committed to meeting on a regular basis to study their teaching strategies and the effects of those strategies on the students in their classrooms. The teacher teams can be of varied form and composition. Whatever the organizational structure, the teams have one goal – that is to improve teaching so that student learning is improved. Policy developers, legislators, and educational leaders have encouraged the adoption of collaborative professional learning teams as a school reform model for improving schools. In this book we describe the results of studies of professional learning communities in real schools and the effects of the teams on student learning. Much of the time school innovations are not examined in depth. Instead authors and developers simply advocate that they be used. In this book, school principals and administrators describe how their teachers used the PLC teams to improve student learning in their schools. In other words, this book presents actual research on the effects of the use of PLCs rather than testimonials.
