This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is a leading candidate for the unification of universal forces and matter, and one of its most striking predictions is the existence of small additional dimensions that have escaped detection so far. This book focuses on the geometry of these dimensions, beginning with the basics of the theory, the mathematical properties of spinors, and differential geometry. It further explores advanced techniques at the core of current research, such as G-structures and generalized complex geometry. Many significant classes of solutions to the theory's equations are studied in detail, from special holonomy and Sasaki–Einstein manifolds to their more recent generalizations involving fluxes for form fields. Various explicit examples are discussed, of interest to graduates and researchers.

Book String Theory Compactifications

Download or read book String Theory Compactifications written by Mariana Graña and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lectures in this book provide graduate students and non-specialist researchers with a concise introduction to the concepts and formalism required to reduce the ten-dimensional string theories to the observable four-dimensional space-time - a procedure called string compactification. The text starts with a very brief introduction to string theory, first working out its massless spectrum and showing how the condition on the number of dimensions arises. It then dwells on the different possible internal manifolds, from the simplest to the most relevant phenomenologically, thereby showing that the most elegant description is through an extension of ordinary Riemannian geometry termed generalized geometry, which was first introduced by Hitchin. Last but not least, the authors review open problems in string phenomenology, such as the embedding of the Standard Model and obtaining de Sitter solutions.

It contains over 120 exercises with solutions, and over 200 homework problems with solutions available on a password protected website for lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521860697.

Book Basic Concepts of String Theory

Download or read book Basic Concepts of String Theory written by Ralph Blumenhagen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-03 with total page 787 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to thoroughly prepare the reader for research in string theory at an intermediate level. As such it is not a compendium of results but intended as textbook in the sense that most of the material is organized in a pedagogical and self-contained fashion. Beyond the basics, a number of more advanced topics are introduced, such as conformal field theory, superstrings and string dualities - the text does not cover applications to black hole physics and cosmology, nor strings theory at finite temperatures. End-of-chapter references have been added to guide the reader wishing to pursue further studies or to start research in well-defined topics covered by this book.

Book The Geometry of Toroidal Compactifications in String Theory

Download or read book The Geometry of Toroidal Compactifications in String Theory written by James Alexander Gill and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compactifications are the standard way of connecting string theory with phenomenology. Toroidal compactifications, in particular, are simple enough to be approachable, but still yield interesting dynamics in lower dimensions. We explore different aspects of toroidal compactifications, and use different tools to analyze the compactified theories. First we consider a two-dimensional torus with twisted boundary conditions for the fields. We analyze this with matrix models using the Dijkgraaf-Vafa method. Next, we move to higher dimensional compactifications. By considering M-theory on a T 10, we may use algebraic tools from the correspondence with E10. We prove that these give us a, simple way to check if two configurations (each containing two objects) are U-dual or not. Next, we use these same tools to analyze M-theory compactified on a double orbifold. We find another infinite-dimensional Lie algebra which corresponds to this theory, whose roots give information about the objects inhabiting this theory, much as the E10 correspondence does for M-theory on T10.

Download or read book Geometry and Type IIB String Theory written by Nils-Ole Walliser and published by Sudwestdeutscher Verlag Fur Hochschulschriften AG. This book was released on 2012 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The derivation of the Standard Model, or supersymmetric extensions thereof, is one of the main goals of string theory model building. The present work is devoted to the study and geometrical description of type IIB superstring theory and F-theory model building. Toric geometry allows a systematic analysis of a large class of string compactification processes. Compact Calabi-Yau (CY) manifolds play a prominent role in these processes. In the last years, combinatorial methods have been worked out that permit the classification and analysis of a large number of CY varieties in terms of reflexive polyhedra. After a concise exposition of the basic concepts of toric geometry, we study the so-called Large Volume Scenario on explicit CY manifolds. Furthermore, we systematically construct a large number of compact CY fourfolds suitable for F-theory model building. Physically motivated conditions lead to strong constraints on the geometry. We work out several examples in more detail. At the end, we focus on the complex moduli space of CY threefolds.

Book String Theory Compactifications with Fluxes and Generalized Geometry

Download or read book String Theory Compactifications with Fluxes and Generalized Geometry written by Davide Cassani and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Over the past decade string theory has had an increasing impact on many areas of physics: high energy and hadronic physics, gravitation and cosmology, mathematical physics and even condensed matter physics. The impact has been through many major conceptual and methodological developments in quantum field theory in the past fifteen years. In addition, string theory has exerted a dramatic influence on developments in contemporary mathematics, including Gromov-Witten theory, mirror symmetry in complex and symplectic geometry, and important ramifications in enumerative geometry." "This volume is derived from a conference of younger leading practitioners around the common theme: "What is string theory?" The talks covered major current topics, both mathematical and physical, related to string theory. Graduate students and research mathematicians interested in string theory in mathematics and physics will be interested in this workshop."--BOOK JACKET.

Book A Brief History of String Theory

Download or read book A Brief History of String Theory written by Dean Rickles and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-02-18 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During its forty year lifespan, string theory has always had the power to divide, being called both a 'theory of everything' and a 'theory of nothing'. Critics have even questioned whether it qualifies as a scientific theory at all. This book adopts an objective stance, standing back from the question of the truth or falsity of string theory and instead focusing on how it came to be and how it came to occupy its present position in physics. An unexpectedly rich history is revealed, with deep connections to our most well-established physical theories. Fully self-contained and written in a lively fashion, the book will appeal to a wide variety of readers from novice to specialist.
