Book Geometric Transitions Topological Strings and Generalized Complex Geometry

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mirror symmetry is one of the most beautiful symmetries in string theory. It helps us very effectively gain insights into non-perturbative worldsheet instanton effects. It was also shown that the study of mirror symmetry for Calabi-Yau flux compactification leads us to the territory of ''Non-Kaehlerity''. In this thesis we demonstrate how to construct a new class of symplectic non-Kaehler and complex non-Kaehler string theory vacua via generalized geometric transitions. The class admits a mirror pairing by construction. From a variety of sources, including super-gravity analysis and KK reduction on SU(3) structure manifolds, we conclude that string theory connects Calabi-Yau spaces to both complex non-Kaehler and symplectic non-Kaehler manifolds and the resulting manifolds lie in generalized complex geometry. We go on to study the topological twisted models on a class of generalized complex geometry, bi-Hermitian geometry, which is the most general target space for (2, 2) world-sheet theory with non-trivial H flux turned on. We show that the usual Kaehler A and B models are generalized in a natural way. Since the gauged supergravity is the low energy effective theory for the compactifications on generalized geometries, we study the fate of flux-induced isometry gauging in N = 2 IIA and heterotic strings under non-perturbative instanton effects. Interestingly, we find we have protection mechanisms preventing the corrections to the hyper moduli spaces. Besides generalized geometries, we also discuss the possibility of new NS-NS fluxes in a new doubled formalism.

Book Enumerative Geometry and String Theory

Download or read book Enumerative Geometry and String Theory written by Sheldon Katz and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2006 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most famous example of how ideas from modern physics have revolutionized mathematics is the way string theory has led to an overhaul of enumerative geometry, an area of mathematics that started in the eighteen hundreds. Century-old problems of enumerating geometric configurations have now been solved using new and deep mathematical techniques inspired by physics! The book begins with an insightful introduction to enumerative geometry. From there, the goal becomes explaining the more advanced elements of enumerative algebraic geometry. Along the way, there are some crash courses on intermediate topics which are essential tools for the student of modern mathematics, such as cohomology and other topics in geometry. The physics content assumes nothing beyond a first undergraduate course. The focus is on explaining the action principle in physics, the idea of string theory, and how these directly lead to questions in geometry. Once these topics are in place, the connection between physics and enumerative geometry is made with the introduction of topological quantum field theory and quantum cohomology.

Book Topological Phase Transitions and New Developments

Download or read book Topological Phase Transitions and New Developments written by Jose Jorge V and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-08-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry and topology have been a fascination in physics since the start of the 20th century. A leading example is Einstein's geometrical theory of gravity. At the beginning of the 1970s, topological ideas entered areas of condensed matter physics. These advances were driven by new seminal ideas resolving a serious contradiction between experiment and the standard interpretation of a rigorous mathematical theorem which led to the study of new exotic topological phases of matter. Topological defect driven phase transitions in thin, two dimensional films of superfluids, superconductors and crystals have provided great insight into the mechanism governing these topological phases present in those physical systems. Moreover, many of these topological properties remain 'protected' against disorder and topological distortion perturbations. An example of possible applications of such robustness to perturbations is in the search for encoding information in quantum computers, potentially providing the platform for fault-tolerant quantum computations. In the past four decades, the discovery of topological phases engendered great interest in condensed matter physics. It also attracted the attention of researchers working on quantum information, quantum materials and simulations, high energy physics and string theory. This unique volume contains articles written by some of the most prominent names in the field, including Nobel Laureate John Michael Kosterlitz and Professor Jorge V José. They originate from talks and discussions by leading experts at a recent workshop. They review previous works as well as addressing contemporary developments in the most pressing and important issues on various aspects of topological phases and topological phase transitions.

Book Geometry Topology and Physics Second Edition

Download or read book Geometry Topology and Physics Second Edition written by Mikio Nakahara and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2003-06-04 with total page 598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differential geometry and topology have become essential tools for many theoretical physicists. In particular, they are indispensable in theoretical studies of condensed matter physics, gravity, and particle physics. Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition introduces the ideas and techniques of differential geometry and topology at a level suitable for postgraduate students and researchers in these fields. The second edition of this popular and established text incorporates a number of changes designed to meet the needs of the reader and reflect the development of the subject. The book features a considerably expanded first chapter, reviewing aspects of path integral quantization and gauge theories. Chapter 2 introduces the mathematical concepts of maps, vector spaces, and topology. The following chapters focus on more elaborate concepts in geometry and topology and discuss the application of these concepts to liquid crystals, superfluid helium, general relativity, and bosonic string theory. Later chapters unify geometry and topology, exploring fiber bundles, characteristic classes, and index theorems. New to this second edition is the proof of the index theorem in terms of supersymmetric quantum mechanics. The final two chapters are devoted to the most fascinating applications of geometry and topology in contemporary physics, namely the study of anomalies in gauge field theories and the analysis of Polakov's bosonic string theory from the geometrical point of view. Geometry, Topology and Physics, Second Edition is an ideal introduction to differential geometry and topology for postgraduate students and researchers in theoretical and mathematical physics.

Book Chern Simons Theory Matrix Models and Topological Strings

Download or read book Chern Simons Theory Matrix Models and Topological Strings written by Marcos Marino and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-22 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the old idea that gauge theories and string theories are equivalent has been implemented and developed in various ways, and there are by now various models where the string theory / gauge theory correspondence is at work. One of the most important examples of this correspondence relates Chern-Simons theory, a topological gauge theory in three dimensions which describes knot and three-manifold invariants, to topological string theory, which is deeply related to Gromov-Witten invariants. This has led to some surprising relations between three-manifold geometry and enumerative geometry. This book gives the first coherent presentation of this and other related topics. After an introduction to matrix models and Chern-Simons theory, the book describes in detail the topological string theories that correspond to these gauge theories and develops the mathematical implications of this duality for the enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau manifolds and knot theory. It is written in a pedagogical style and will be useful reading for graduate students and researchers in both mathematics and physics willing to learn about these developments.

Book Geometry of String Theory Compactifications

Download or read book Geometry of String Theory Compactifications written by Alessandro Tomasiello and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-13 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: String theory is a leading candidate for the unification of universal forces and matter, and one of its most striking predictions is the existence of small additional dimensions that have escaped detection so far. This book focuses on the geometry of these dimensions, beginning with the basics of the theory, the mathematical properties of spinors, and differential geometry. It further explores advanced techniques at the core of current research, such as G-structures and generalized complex geometry. Many significant classes of solutions to the theory's equations are studied in detail, from special holonomy and Sasaki–Einstein manifolds to their more recent generalizations involving fluxes for form fields. Various explicit examples are discussed, of interest to graduates and researchers.

Book Topology Geometry and Gauge fields

Download or read book Topology Geometry and Gauge fields written by Gregory L. Naber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-22 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of topology and geometry, beginning with a comprehensible account of the extraordinary and rather mysterious impact of mathematical physics, and especially gauge theory, on the study of the geometry and topology of manifolds. The focus of the book is the Yang-Mills-Higgs field and some considerable effort is expended to make clear its origin and significance in physics. Much of the mathematics developed here to study these fields is standard, but the treatment always keeps one eye on the physics and sacrifices generality in favor of clarity. The author brings readers up the level of physics and mathematics needed to conclude with a brief discussion of the Seiberg-Witten invariants. A large number of exercises are included to encourage active participation on the part of the reader.

Book Geometric Transitions

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 171 pages

Download or read book Geometric Transitions written by Jeffrey Danciger and published by Stanford University. This book was released on 2011 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We introduce a geometric transition between two homogeneous three-dimensional geometries: hyperbolic geometry and anti de Sitter (AdS) geometry. Given a path of three-dimensional hyperbolic structures that collapse down onto a hyperbolic plane, we describe a method for constructing a natural continuation of this path into AdS structures. In particular, when hyperbolic cone manifolds collapse, the AdS manifolds generated on the "other side" of the transition have tachyon singularities. The method involves the study of a new transitional geometry called half-pipe geometry. We also discuss combinatorial/algebraic tools for constructing transitions using ideal tetrahedra. Using these tools we prove that transitions can always be constructed when the underlying manifold is a punctured torus bundle.

Book Topological Strings and Quantum Curves

Download or read book Topological Strings and Quantum Curves written by Lotte Hollands and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents several new insights on the interface between mathematics and theoretical physics, with a central role for Riemann surfaces. First of all, the duality between Vafa-Witten theory and WZW models is embedded in string theory. Secondly, this model is generalized to a web of dualities connecting topological string theory and N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories to a configuration of D-branes that intersect over a Riemann surface. This description yields a new perspective on topological string theory in terms of a KP integrable system based on a quantum curve. Thirdly, this thesis describes a geometric analysis of wall-crossing in N=4 string theory. And lastly, it offers a novel approach to constuct metastable vacua in type IIB string theory.

Book Topology and Geometry of Intersections of Ellipsoids in R n

Download or read book Topology and Geometry of Intersections of Ellipsoids in R n written by Santiago López de Medrano and published by Springer. This book was released on 2024-05-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives an overview of research in the topology and geometry of intersections of quadrics in $\mathbb{R}^n$, with a focus on intersections of concentric ellipsoids and related spaces. Unifying and organizing material previously spread over many articles, it also contains new results. The first part provides very detailed foundations of a wide-ranging theory that could be useful for future developments. It includes chapters on general intersections of quadrics, operations on them, and intersections of concentric and coaxial quadrics. Moving from the general to the specific, the second part focuses on a topological description of transverse intersections of concentric ellipsoids, including a complete description of the case of three ellipsoids, and of some large families of more than three of them. The third part looks at relations to other areas of mathematics such as dynamical systems, complex geometry, contact and symplectic geometry, andother applications. An appendix gathers some technical items and also gives an account of the origins, motivations and progression of the subject, including historical recollections of the author, who has been central to its development.

Book Topics in Physical Mathematics

Download or read book Topics in Physical Mathematics written by Kishore Marathe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-08-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As many readers will know, the 20th century was a time when the fields of mathematics and the sciences were seen as two separate entities. Caused by the rapid growth of the physical sciences and an increasing abstraction in mathematical research, each party, physicists and mathematicians alike, suffered a misconception; not only of the opposition’s theoretical underpinning, but of how the two subjects could be intertwined and effectively utilized. One sub-discipline that played a part in the union of the two subjects is Theoretical Physics. Breaking it down further came the fundamental theories, Relativity and Quantum theory, and later on Yang-Mills theory. Other areas to emerge in this area are those derived from the works of Donaldson, Chern-Simons, Floer-Fukaya, and Seiberg-Witten. Aimed at a wide audience, Physical Topics in Mathematics demonstrates how various physical theories have played a crucial role in the developments of Mathematics and in particular, Geometric Topology. Issues are studied in great detail, and the book steadfastly covers the background of both Mathematics and Theoretical Physics in an effort to bring the reader to a deeper understanding of their interaction. Whilst the world of Theoretical Physics and Mathematics is boundless; it is not the intention of this book to cover its enormity. Instead, it seeks to lead the reader through the world of Physical Mathematics; leaving them with a choice of which realm they wish to visit next.
