Each of forty-one original black-and-white motifs is spun into three pages of adaptations, offering strikingly different variations on the original theme. More than 4,300 images build upon basic geometric shapes, transforming circles, squares, rectangles, and triangles into intricate patterns that form kaleidoscopic designs, optical illusions, and hypnotic abstracts. A versatile resource for graphics, art, and craft projects, this collection offers not only a wealth of images for immediate practical use but also an excellent reference for design inspiration.

Book Six Themes on Variation

    Book Details:

  • Pages : 169 pages

Download or read book Six Themes on Variation written by Steven James Cox and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2004 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The calculus of variations is a beautiful subject with a rich history and with origins in the minimization problems of calculus. Although it is now at the core of many modern mathematical fields, it does not have a well-defined place in most undergraduate mathematics curricula. This volume should nevertheless give the undergraduate reader a sense of its great character and importance. Interesting functionals, such as area or energy, often give rise to problems whose most natural solution occurs by differentiating a one-parameter family of variations of some function. The critical points of the functional are related to the solutions of the associated Euler-Lagrange equation. These differential equations are at the heart of the calculus of variations and its applications to wave mechanics, minimal surfaces, soap bubbles, and modeling traffic flow. All are readily accessible to advanced undergraduates. This book is derived from a workshop sponsored by Rice University. It is suitable for advanced undergraduates, graduate students and research mathematicians interested in the calculus of variations and its applications to other subjects.

Book Geometric Constructions

    Book Details:
  • Author : George E. Martin
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461206294
  • Pages : 210 pages

Download or read book Geometric Constructions written by George E. Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometric constructions have been a popular part of mathematics throughout history. The first chapter here is informal and starts from scratch, introducing all the geometric constructions from high school that have been forgotten or were never learned. The second chapter formalises Plato's game, and examines problems from antiquity such as the impossibility of trisecting an arbitrary angle. After that, variations on Plato's theme are explored: using only a ruler, a compass, toothpicks, a ruler and dividers, a marked rule, or a tomahawk, ending in a chapter on geometric constructions by paperfolding. The author writes in a charming style and nicely intersperses history and philosophy within the mathematics, teaching a little geometry and a little algebra along the way. This is as much an algebra book as it is a geometry book, yet since all the algebra and geometry needed is developed within the text, very little mathematical background is required. This text has been class tested for several semesters with a master's level class for secondary teachers.

Book Variations on a Theme of Borel

Download or read book Variations on a Theme of Borel written by Shmuel Weinberger and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-12-08 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the middle of the last century, after hearing a talk of Mostow on one of his rigidity theorems, Borel conjectured in a letter to Serre a purely topological version of rigidity for aspherical manifolds (i.e. manifolds with contractible universal covers). The Borel conjecture is now one of the central problems of topology with many implications for manifolds that need not be aspherical. Since then, the theory of rigidity has vastly expanded in both precision and scope. This book rethinks the implications of accepting his heuristic as a source of ideas. Doing so leads to many variants of the original conjecture - some true, some false, and some that remain conjectural. The author explores this collection of ideas, following them where they lead whether into rigidity theory in its differential geometric and representation theoretic forms, or geometric group theory, metric geometry, global analysis, algebraic geometry, K-theory, or controlled topology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “one of the master naturalists of our time” (American Scientist), a fascinating exploration of what seashells reveal about biology, evolution, and the history of life Geerat Vermeij wrote this “celebration of shells” to share his enthusiasm for these supremely elegant creations and what they can teach us about nature. Most popular books on shells emphasize the identification of species, but Vermeij uses shells as a way to explore major ideas in biology. How are shells built? How do they work? And how did they evolve? With lucidity and charm, the MacArthur-winning evolutionary biologist reveals how shells give us insights into the lives of animals today and in the distant geological past.

Book Introduction to Global Variational Geometry

Download or read book Introduction to Global Variational Geometry written by Demeter Krupka and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-01-13 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to recent research in the global variational theory on smooth manifolds. Its main objective is an extension of the classical variational calculus on Euclidean spaces to (topologically nontrivial) finite-dimensional smooth manifolds; to this purpose the methods of global analysis of differential forms are used. Emphasis is placed on the foundations of the theory of variational functionals on fibered manifolds - relevant geometric structures for variational principles in geometry, physical field theory and higher-order fibered mechanics. The book chapters include: - foundations of jet bundles and analysis of differential forms and vector fields on jet bundles, - the theory of higher-order integral variational functionals for sections of a fibred space, the (global) first variational formula in infinitesimal and integral forms- extremal conditions and the discussion of Noether symmetries and generalizations,- the inverse problems of the calculus of variations of Helmholtz type- variational sequence theory and its consequences for the global inverse problem (cohomology conditions)- examples of variational functionals of mathematical physics. Complete formulations and proofs of all basic assertions are given, based on theorems of global analysis explained in the Appendix.

Book Geometric Nonlinear Functional Analysis

Download or read book Geometric Nonlinear Functional Analysis written by Yoav Benyamini and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic and unified study of geometric nonlinear functional analysis. This area has its classical roots in the beginning of the twentieth century and is now a very active research area, having close connections to geometric measure theory, probability, classical analysis, combinatorics, and Banach space theory. The main theme of the book is the study of uniformly continuous and Lipschitz functions between Banach spaces (e.g., differentiability, stability, approximation, existence of extensions, fixed points, etc.). This study leads naturally also to the classification of Banach spaces and of their important subsets (mainly spheres) in the uniform and Lipschitz categories. Many recent rather deep theorems and delicate examples are included with complete and detailed proofs. Challenging open problems are described and explained, and promising new research directions are indicated.
