Book Geometric Patterns Angles and the Guitar

Download or read book Geometric Patterns Angles and the Guitar written by Steve Persaud and published by Modern History Press. This book was released on with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Novel Approach to Learning Guitar Chord Progressions This treatise seeks to encourage guitarists of all levels to find their voice by experimenting and creating chordal ideas by playing notes on any part of the fingerboard to come up with their own chord shapes and patterns and not necessarily familiar, geometric shapes. These chord progressions can express an emotion or tone, be it sad, happy, humorous, mysterious, and the next step is to use an online chord app (if needed) to determine the names of the chords that were created. Guitarists who compose instrumental pieces will not be limited by conventional chord shapes but can come up with unusual chordal ideas that highlight their creative and compositional abilities against a background of shapes and patterns. "This is interesting! I am an intermediate-level guitar player, and I am only familiar with moving basic chord shapes vertically, but I do think it would have been very useful if I had been familiar with these chord shapes, and this concept of moving them horizontally, earlier in my learning process." -- Dennis Dezentje, The Netherlands "I have read this book repeatedly and found it quite interesting. It did not take long to recognize the genius it unleashed. As I explored Persaud's Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar and applied its principles, I most certainly wished I had had access to it much earlier during my exposure to advanced guitar methods." -- Hezekiah Dean, District Superintendent of Education (retired), Bahamas "This method can revolutionize the way a student is taught to play a musical instrument. Many students have problems processing words. For many of them, learning through visualizing shapes and the pattern of movements will be easier because the concept is more concrete. Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar will have great success with both tactile and visual learners." -- Mary Moncur Grey, B.A., Dip Ed., MBA "The author provides an interesting geometrical concept, something that the mathematically oriented guitarist will certainly appreciate. Geometric Patterns, Angles and the Guitar will open up a less-trodden path for guitarists, allowing them to explore chord construction, sounds and tonalities. Welcome to music creativity beyond basic music theory." --Rehman Abdul, M.S., P. Eng., Geotechnical Engineer

Book Intervallic Fretboard Towards Improvising on the Guitar

Download or read book Intervallic Fretboard Towards Improvising on the Guitar written by Ashkan Mashhour and published by . This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapes and patterns are widely used in teaching the guitar, be it for scales, chords, or arpeggios. This book takes a novel and different approach to the guitar fretboard, emphasising an intervallic thought process. Moving away from shapes and patterns, this knowledge of intervals on the fretboard and its geometric properties leads to an intelligent choice of notes based on their harmonic function. Praised by guitar greats Brent Mason, Biréli Lagrène, Brett Garsed, as well as Jimmy Brown (Guitar World) and Prof. Richard Smith (USC), Intervallic Fretboard demonstrates the versatility of intervallic thinking in various music genres and playing styles.Accompanying CD/audio is available separately (see website).– www.intervallicfretboard.com –

Book excerpt: Raised in the cornfields of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Arthur Russell (1951-1992) would become a visionary cellist, singer, composer, and producer in Lower Manhattan's "Downtown" arts scene during the 1970s and 80s. Russell's enigmatic music blended and transcended genres as disparate as Indian raga, Americana folk, avant-garde composition, and disco. He actively infused popular music into Manhattan's avant-garde art scene, while bringing a Buddhist-inspired experimentalism into American popular music. As poet Allen Ginsberg recalled, "His ambition seemed to be to write popular music, or bubblegum music, but Buddhist bubblegum; to transmit the dharma through the most elemental form..."0Following Russell's premature death due to AIDS at age 40, composer Philip Glass reflected, "Arthur was very, very ahead of his time." And while a few of his dance singles would remain underground classics, Russell's work would be significantly neglected for over a decade. However, through the archival releases of Audika Records, a documentary film (Wild Combination) and a biography (Hold On to Your Dreams), Russell's fearless creativity and radical vulnerability have found an admiring audience in the 21st century. Today, celebrated artists--from Kanye West to Rosalía and Peter Broderick--as well as emerging musical generations are breathing new life into Russell's music and praising his name. Nevertheless, he has remained as mysterious as he has become accessible.00Buddhist Bubblegum dives deep into the mystery of Arthur Russell and offers an unprecedented exploration into his lifelong Vajrayana Buddhist practice. Author Matt Marble charts Russell's spiritual path, from his early life as a Buddhist monk on a Bay Area commune to his maturing engagement with Japanese Shingon and Indo-Tibetan Vajrayana traditions in Manhattan. Along the way, we learn how Russell creatively adopted traditional methods of mantra, mandala, meditation, astrology, numerology, and more.

Book Fundamentals of Guitar

    Book Details:
  • Author : Miles Okazaki
  • Publisher : Mel Bay Publications
  • Release : 2015-02-25
  • ISBN : 1619114860
  • Pages : 173 pages

Download or read book Fundamentals of Guitar written by Miles Okazaki and published by Mel Bay Publications. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed to be useful for guitarists at any skill level. Beginners can use it as an introduction to the foundational concepts of the instrument, intermediate players can use it for training and theoretical work, and advanced players can explore the sections on advanced theory, extended technique and the exhaustive tables of melodic and rhythmic possibilities. It is divided into two parts: pitch and rhythm. Part 1 (pitch) begins with the properties of string, harmonics, and tuning systems. It then moves methodically through pitch information, beginning with locating all versions of a single pitch, building pentatonic, heptatonic, and all possible symmetrical scales. This is followed by a study of intervals, with all possible locations of every two pitches, and a long study that moves through every possible fingering of three pitches, with a series of exercises to master triadic syntax. Part 1 closes with a study of four-pitch structures and complete tables that show all possible pitch sets in circular visual notation. Part 2 (rhythm) begins with a complete course in "Symmetrical Picking," a method based on drum rudiments that builds control in the picking hand through an exhaustive variety of movements. The focus of this section is building a strong rhythmic foundation, with a focus on efficiency, accuracy, speed, dynamics, and groove. It is followed by a study of legato playing, working with ornaments and slides. The study of playing with fingers on multiple strings takes up the remainder of the book. This begins with the study of pulse against pulse, playing two simultaneous tempos. The book concludes with a study of polyrhythm, playing one rhythm against another. Plain English is used as much as possible to describe theoretical concepts, and hundreds of illustrations were made for the book as an aid to those who either don't speak English or prefer to think visually. This approach is designed to be inclusive and to promote creative practice. The main idea of the book is described in this passage (page 154): "Even in this small area there is a lot of material, potentially a lifetime of study. The amount of information can feel overwhelming to students at any level. For this reason, the book is designed for self-directed practice, with an emphasis on what the player "could" do, rather than what the player "should" do. The principle is to develop your own learning process, rather than following someone else's. The ability to make choices is essential in finding a personal approach to the instrument. Pick and choose the studies that seem interesting - there should be enough variety to accommodate a wide range of personalities. If any particular concept or exercise has been useful as the starting point for a new creative direction, then the book has done its job. Its purpose is not to push any dogma, method, or style, but to open the door to options for guitarists of any background that are looking for new perspectives.

Book The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians

Download or read book The Hawaiian Steel Guitar and Its Great Hawaiian Musicians written by Lorene Ruymar and published by Centerstream Publications. This book was released on 1996 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Fretted). The term "steel guitar" can refer to instruments with multiple tunings, 6 to 14 strings, and even multiple fretboards. To add even more confusion, the term "Hawaiian guitar" refers to an instrument played flat on the lap with a steel bar outside of Hawaii, but in Hawaii, it is the early term for the slack key guitar. Lorene Ruymar clears up the confusion in her new book that takes a look at Hawaiian music; the origin of the steel guitar and its spread throughout the world; Hawaiian playing styles, techniques and tunings; and more. Includes hundreds of photos, a foreword by Jerry Byrd, and a bibliography and suggested reading list.

Book Acoustic Guitar Design

  • ISBN : 3030893812
  • Pages : 355 pages

Download or read book Acoustic Guitar Design written by Richard Mark French and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-03 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is for experienced luthiers and guitar designers in the industry, novice builders wishing to improve their designs, and guitar owners interested in knowing more about their instruments. It includes the most important technical information gathered from many sources, including the academic literature and the author’s own work, presented here in a clear, actionable form with a minimum of mathematics. The book begins with a historical survey on how important features of the acoustic guitar evolved over centuries. The review leads up to a chapter focusing on three iconic instruments that represent the most important types of acoustic guitars: classical, steel string flat top and archtop. As the guitar market is so strongly conditioned by familiar, traditional instruments, a successful builder must have a thorough working understanding of the most important designs to underpin their own work. Through this volume, Professor French lays out the entire design process and collects detailed information in one convenient source. Luthiers quite often compile notebooks of measurements, part numbers, specific design features and other details they routinely need. This book organizes much of that information, with tables of dimensions, material properties, and other details in one essential final chapter. The book also features concise side bar contributions by top guitar designers and builders including Tim Shaw, Chief Engineer at Fender Music; Bob Taylor, Co-Founder of Taylor Guitars; and Andy Powers, Master Guitar Designer and Partner.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arena Concert: Music, Media and Mass Entertainment is the first sustained engagement with what might said to be - in its melding of concert and gathering, in its evolving relationship with digital and social media, in its delivery of event, experience, technology and star - the art form of the 21st century. This volume offers interviews with key designers, discussions of the practicalities of mounting arena concerts, mixing and performing live to a mass audience, recollections of the giants of late twentieth century music in performance, and critiques of latter-day pretenders to the throne. The authors track the evolution of the arena concert, consider design and architecture, celebrity and fashion, and turn to feminism, ethnographic research, and ideas of humour, liveness and authenticity, in order to explore and frame the arena concert. The arena concert becomes the “real time” centre of a global digital network, and the gig-goer pays not only for an immersion in (and, indeed, role in) its spectacular nature, but also for a close encounter with the performers, in this contained and exalted space. The spectacular nature of the arena concert raises challenges that have yet to be fully technologically overcome, and has given rise to a reinvention of what live music actually means. Love it or loathe it, the arena concert is a major presence in the cultural landscape of the 21st century. This volume finds out why.

Knowing how to interpret art is one of the biggest issues facing casual gallery-goers. They may ask themselves questions like: Why is the Mona Lisa so small? Why are some frames gilded in gold while others are non-existent? What can the use of material say about a work, whether it’s an oil painting, collage or made of found objects? From colour, medium and size to where the piece is situated, and the artist who made it, you’ll learn what’s important and what’s not so important. The book includes two parts: Part One introduces the elements using examples from throughout art history, introducing key terms and techniques while giving you the tools to apply lessons learned outside of the book. Part Two puts the elements into practice by breaking down 30 great artworks element by element—from Michelangelo to Frida Kahlo. With the Elements of Art, you’ll learn important information about technique, style, material, location and colour that will shape you to read and interpret art.
