Dorman, Plasmas and Energetic Processes in Geomagnetosphere reflects the development of the geomagnetospheres research and applications for the last few decades. The importance and actuality of geomagnetosphere research are based on the following three factors: 1. The geomagnetosphere is the nearest giant natural laboratory, where it is possible via satellites and ground measurements to investigate in detail many different plasmas and energetic processes in space, which are caused by an interaction of high kinetic energy solar wind plasmas and its perturbations (Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections - ICMEs, Interplanetary Shock Waves ISWs, Interplanetary Interaction Regions IIR), including those frozen in the Interplanetary Magnetic Fields (IMF) with the rotated main geomagnetic field. This interaction leads to the dynamic transformation of magnetic fields in the geomagnetosphere, generation and trapping of high energy particles (which are known as Magnetospheric Cosmic Rays MCR), and the generation of many types of instabilities and electromagnetic radiations. These processes are in principle similar to processes in magnetospheres of other planets and their moons, in the atmosphere of the sun and other stars, in interplanetary and in interstellar space, and in many different astrophysical objects. This research is an important basis for fundamental space and astrophysical science. 2. Today, technology, economics, navigation, TV, Internet, radio connections, military aspects, and the life of people on our planet are strongly connected to the work of many satellites moving inside the geomagnetosphere. Different processes and MCR in the geomagnetosphere influence the satellites work and often lead to satellite malfunctions up to fully destroying their electronics; satellites essentially die in these cases. The described research can be considered as a basis for developing methods of forecasting dangerous situations for satellites in different orbits and to decrease the risk of satellite malfunctions and loss. 3. The interaction of ICME, ISW, and IIR with the geomagnetosphere leads to the generation of big magnetic storms accompanied with a Forbush decrease and precursory effects in Galactic Cosmic Ray (GCR) intensity. These magnetic storms are dangerous not only to satellites, but also to the Earths surface in terms of technology, radio connections, car accidents, and human health (e.g., increasing the frequency of infarct myocardial and brain strokes). Investigations of causes of magnetic storms can help to develop methods of forecasting and decreasing the level of magnetic storm hazards. Therefore, the other practical application of this research is connected with the problem of space weather and space climate influence on the technology, radio connections, navigation, transportation, and peoples health on the Earth, which is independent of altitude and geomagnetic latitude.

Book excerpt: This monograph is, as far as the authors have gathered, the first one of its kind which presents various characterisations of many important and continuous distributions. It consists of six chapters. The first chapter lists cumulative distribution functions, probability density functions, hazard functions and reverse hazard functions of one hundred thirty-six important univariate continuous distributions. Chapter Two provides characterisations of these distributions based on the ratio of two truncated moments. Chapter Three takes up the characterisations of some of these distributions in terms of their hazard functions. Chapter Four deals with the characterisations of some of these distributions based on their reverse hazard functions. Characterisations of some of these distributions based on the conditional expectations of certain functions of the random variable are presented in Chapter Five. Finally, to make this book self-contained, we present the characterisations of a large number of distributions (without their proofs) that have already been published by Hamedani and coauthors in Chapter Six.

In order to keep pace with the Air Force needs, methods of prediction must be considerably improved. Conditions within the magnetosphere are linked to conditions within the solar corona by the following chain: the coupling between the corona and the solar wind in the vicinity of the sun, the propagation of the solar wind from the vicinity of the sun to the vicinity of the earth, and the coupling of the solar wind at 1 AU to the magnetosphere. This report is a review of the present knowledge of the coronal-solar wind coupling and presents a brief description of problems that remain for the development of an enhanced capability to predict the level of geomagnetic disturbances. Recommendations for a 3-year and a 10-year research plan to address these problems is also included. Spatial/temporal variations in high-latitude electromagnetic phenomena, such as dynamic aurorae, electric fields and currents, have proved to be extremely complex. Without the geomagnetic field, for example, life on Earth as we know it would not be possible. And results from recent space missions to Mars and Venus strongly indicate that planetary magnetic fields play a vital role in preventing atmospheric erosion by the solar wind. However, very little is known about the underlying interaction between the solar wind and a planet’s magnetic field. The book takes a synergistic interdisciplinary approach that combines newly developed tools for data acquisition and analysis, computer simulations of planetary interiors and dynamos, models of solar wind interaction, measurement of ancient terrestrial rocks and meteorites, and laboratory investigations.

Book excerpt: The COSPAR Colloquium on Solar-Terrestrial Magnetic Activity and Space Environment (STMASE) was held in the National Astronomy Observatories of Chinese Academy of Sciences (NAOC) in Beijing, China in September 10-12, 2001. The meeting was focused on five areas of the solar-terrestrial magnetic activity and space environment studies, including study on solar surface magnetism; solar magnetic activity, dynamical response of the heliosphere; space weather prediction; and space environment exploration and monitoring. A hot topic of space research, CMEs, which are widely believed to be the most important phenomenon of the space environment, is discussed in many papers. Other papers show results of observational and theoretical studies toward better understanding of the complicated image of the magnetic coupling between the Sun and the Earth, although little is still known little its physical background. Space weather prediction, which is very important for a modern society expanding into out-space, is another hot topic of space research. However, a long way is still to go to predict exactly when and where a disaster will happen in the space. In that sense, there is much to do for space environment exploration and monitoring. The manuscripts submitted to this Monograph are divided into the following parts: (1) solar surface magnetism, (2) solar magnetic activity, (3) dynamical response of the heliosphere, (4) space environment exploration and monitoring; and (5) space weather prediction.
