Book Geology of the Western Snake River Plain

Download or read book Geology of the Western Snake River Plain written by William A Szary M S and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-08-21 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Western Snake River Plain trends northwest and is considered to be a fault bounded depression with normal faults forming major segments along both edges of the plain. Lacustrine sediments occur above thick basaltic sequences with some inter-bedded sediments mixed with basalt flows. The Western Snake River Plain and the Nevada rift developed as a continuous rift 17 million years ago. The WSRP upper crust was thinned or pulled apart as major extension began about 17 million years ago and the resulting depression was filled with up welling basalt and debris from the adjoining highlands. Chapter 1 presents an overview of the Snake River Plain as a product of the Yellowstone Hot Spot Theory. Features of each segment are described. Chapter 2 discusses the geophysics and tectonics of the SRP providing an overview and geologic setting of the western, central, and eastern SRP. Chapter 3 begins the discussion of the Western Snake River Plain addressing the geologic setting of structure and tectonics, sedimentation, and lacustrine sequences. Chapter 4 discusses the origin and evolution of the WSRP dealing with stratigraphy and volcanic units, structural faulting, and geochemistry. Chapter 5 presents a field trip discussion involving a cross sectional trace through the WSRP starting in the Owyhee Mountains extending into the Boise foothills. Ten stops are presented.

Book Geology and Landscape Evolution

Download or read book Geology and Landscape Evolution written by Joseph A. DiPietro and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2018-04-16 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology and Landscape Evolution: General Principles Applied to the United States, Second Edition, is an accessible text that balances interdisciplinary theory and applications within the physical geography, geology, geomorphology and climatology of the United States. The vast diversity of terrain and landscape across the United States makes this an ideal tool for geoscientists worldwide who research the country’s geological and landscape evolution. The book provides an explanation of how landscape forms, how it evolves and why it looks the way it does. This new edition is fully updated with greater detail throughout and additional figures, maps, drawings and photographs. Rather than limiting the coverage specifically to tectonics or to the origin and evolution of rocks with little regard for the actual landscape beyond general desert, river and glacial features, this book concentrates specifically on the origin of the landscape itself, with specific and exhaustive reference to examples from across the United States. The book begins with a discussion of how rock type and rock structure combine with tectonic activity, climate, isostasy and sea level change to produce landscape and then explores predicting how landscape will evolve. The book goes on to apply those concepts to specific examples throughout the United States, making it a valuable resource for understanding theoretical geological concepts through a practical lens. Presents the complexities of physical geography, geology, geomorphology and climatology of the United States through an interdisciplinary, highly accessible approach Offers hundreds of full-color figures, maps and photographs that capture the systematic interaction of land, rock, rivers, glaciers, global wind patterns and climate, including Google Earth images Provides a thorough assessment of the logic, rationale, and tools required to understand how to interpret landscape and the geological history of the Earth Features exercises that conclude each chapter, aiding in the retention of key concepts Updated with greater detail throughout and additional figures, maps, drawings and photographs Includes additional subheadings so that material is easier to find and digest Includes an all-new chapter on glaciation and expanded exercises using Google Earth images to enhance understanding

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important volume reviews the status of investigations aimed at deciphering the geologic, biogeographic, and archaeological records for the Quaternary Era—the last million years of geologic time-for the area of continental United States. Over eighty Quaternary scientists have contributed to the fifty-five chapters divided into four main parts. Part 1 treats the areal geology, with emphasis on the stratigraphy of the glaciated areas east of the Rocky Mountains, unglaciated eastern and central United States, and western United States. Part 2 deals with biogeography: phytogeography and palynology, animal geography and evolution. Part 3 deals with archaeology prehistory in the northeastern states, southeastern states, plains, desert west, and Pacific Coast including Alaska. Part 4 covers many diverse Quaternary studies on—the continental shelves, isotope geochemistry, paleopedology, the geochemistry of some lake sediments, paleohydrology, glaciers and climate, volcanic-ash chronology, paleomagnetism, neo-tectonics, dendrochronology, and theoretical paleoclimatology. Originally published in 1965. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
