Download or read book Geology and Warfare written by Edward P. F. Rose and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2000 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records lessons learnt from miltary experience in World War I and II. It also contains perspectives from America which show how, in warfare, military geologists irrespective of nationality have pursued tactical and strategic terrain analysis, fortifications and tunnelling, and resource acquisition, defence installations, and field constructions and logistics. It shows how in peace-time military geologists train for wartime operations and may be involved in peace-keeping and nation-building deployments.

Download or read book British Upper Carboniferous Stratigraphy written by C.J. Cleal and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume summarizes the results of a survey of British Upper Carboniferous sites, undertaken between 1978 and 1990 as part of the Geological Conservation Review (GCR). The GCR was the first attempt to assess the scientific significance of all Britain's geological sites and has proved a landmark in the development of a coherent geological conservation strategy in this country. To ensure that the assessments were based on a firm logical and scientific foundation, the range of scientific interest was divided into ninety-seven discrete subject 'blocks', reflecting the natural divisions of stratigraphy, palaeogeography and geological process; Westphalian stratigraphy and Namurian stratigraphy were two of these blocks. The first stage in the survey was a review of the literature, to establish a compre hensive database of sites. From this, a provisional list of potentially significant sites was made and this was circulated to all relevant specialists in this country and abroad. At the same time, the sites were visited to assess their physical condition and whether the interest was still extant. In some cases, excavation (so-called 'site-cleaning') was carried out to see if the interest of a site could be resurrected or enhanced. The com ments made by the specialists and the field observations were then used to produce a second site list, which again was circulated for comment.
Download or read book Aspects of Industry in Roman Yorkshire and the North written by Pete Wilson and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the frontiers of the Roman Empire, military settlements had a profound influence on local crafting traditions. Legions were not just fighting units - they contained a large number of craftsmen, and the fortress would have been a centre of manufacturing activity. A timber legionary fortress, for example, required vast numbers of nails, many of which would have been made by legionary smiths on site, and an army of thousands would require many more pots, shoes and tents than could be produced by local domestic potters and leather workers. But can all developments in local craft and industry be seen as a result of the appearance of the Roman army? The ten papers in this volume focus on craft production in Roman Yorkshire, and the evidence for the role of the army in local manufacturing activities. Several papers examine broad questions surrounding the organisation and scale of production in urban and rural areas. Others consider the local evidence for individual materials and production processes, including those associated with pottery, glass, copper alloys, non-ferrous metals, leather, jet, and building stone.

Download or read book Fluid Flow and Solute Movement in Sandstones written by Ronald D. Barker and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2006 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandstone aquifers are common worldwide: they contain a significant proportion of the Earth's fresh water supplies. However, because of their textural complexity and the frequent occurrence of both matrix and fracture flow, prediction of flow and pollutant migration is still a considerable challenge. This volume contains a collection of papers summarizing current research on an example sandstone aquifer: the UK Permo-Triassic Sandstone sequence. These red bed, organic-poor sandstones are of fluvial and aeolian origin, are often strongly textured, and are cut by discontinuities of a wide range of permeabilities. Matrix flow often dominates, but fracture flow also occurs. The papers in the volume deal with research on saturated and unsaturated flow, and solute and non-aqueous-phase liquid movement. They cover investigations from laboratory to regional scale, and involve a wide range of approaches, from petrophysical through geophysical and hydrochemical to modelling. The book is intended to be of interest to researchers and practitioners involved in water resources and groundwater pollution, and to hydrogeology, water engineering, and environmental science students.

Download or read book The Making of the West Yorkshire Landscape written by Anthony Silson and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2003-11-01 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Making of the West Yorkshire Landscape' is part of the new established 'Making of...' series by Wharncliffe Books. The book holds fascinating and beautiful illustrations that show the West Yorkshire landscape in its entirety. West Yorkshire is a land of great contrast and sudden change. Lonely upland moors rapidly pass into busy valley towns such as Bradford and Halifax. Serene farmland lies close to Huddersfield, Leeds and Wakefield. The cereal lands of the low gently sloping eastern area contrasts sharply with the grasslands of the higher Pennines. 'The Making of the West Yorkshire Landscape' is the story of how West Yorkshire's landscape has changed since the area emerged from under a sea some seventy million years ago. It reveals how, from prehistoric times onwards, people changed an initially wooded landscape into its contemporary pattern of moors, farms, villages and towns. Have a transitional journey through the landscape, from prehistoric times to the present day, as you read 'The Making of the West Yorkshire landscape'.
