Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Underground Waters of Northeastern Texas The area considered in this report embraces square miles in the extreme northeast part of Texas, comprising the counties of Bowie, Red River, Lamar, Delta, Hopkins, Franklin, Titus, Morris, Camp, and Cass. The mean annual rainfall of the region is about 48 inches, ranging from 45 inches in the west to a little more than 50 inches along the Arkansas State line. The mean annual temperature is from 64° to 65° F. The district is traversed from east to west by three lines of railroads, the Texas Pacific (sherman branch), the St. Louis Southwestern, and the Missouri, Kansas Texas. The Marshall branch of the Texas Pacific crosses the eastern part of the region and the Texas Midland, the Gulf, Colorado Santa Fe, and the St. Louis San Francisco all have their termini at Paris in the north western part of the region. The rich soil of the black prairie lands early attracted settlers. According to the census of 1910 the population of the 10 counties named was or an average of to the square mile. The western part of the region is the most thickly settled, the two black land counties, Lamar and Delta, leading, with an average of and per square mile, respectively. The average for the timber belt counties is Hopkins and Camp leading with and 44, respectively. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Underground Waters of the Southeastern Part of the Texas Coastal Plain This contribution to the geology of the ground waters of east and northeast Texas is based on field work done by the writer during the summers of 1907 and 1908. The area described includes the part Of the Coastal Plain of Texas Occupied by the-outcrop of Cenozoic rocks lying east of Brazos River and south of a line extending east and west through Jefferson, in Marion County. (see fig. 1, p. 14, and geologic map, Pl. I, in pocket.) It embraces square miles, an area as great as that of the State Of Indiana. The report describes the under ground water horizons of the region and discusses the artesian condi tions and prospects in the several counties. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Occurrence of Artesian and Other Underground Waters in Texas, New Mexico, and Indian Territory: Together With the Geology and Geography of Those Regions The writer has endeavored to give only the laws of the occurrence and distribution of water, leaving to the engineers the discussion of its utilization. Neither is it within the province of this investigation to enter into an elaborate discussion of the minute geologic structure of this immense area, but in order to comprehend its water conditions it is necessary that such features be briefly described. This book was released on 2018-02-19 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underground Waters of Coastal Plain of Texas Bramage. -the Texas Coastal Plain is traversed by many streams. The largest of these are the Neches, Trinity, Brazos, Colorado, and Nueces rivers. Of all these streams only the Brazos enters the Gulf directly, the others emptying into lagoons or bays. South of the Nueces the drainage is not completely developed and the entire area between this stream and the Rio Grande contains only two small creeks, the San Fernando and Olmos, which unite to form Capano Bay. The larger streams of the area are generally narrow and deep, with feeble currents. Near the Shore many of them expand into broad, shallow lakes entering the Gulf through shallow bays. While there are many streams in the Texas Coastal Plain, much of its. Surface is poorly drained, and in places water Stands in lakes or ponds through out the-year. Book Underground Waters of Southwestern Kansas Classic Reprint

Download or read book Underground Waters of Southwestern Kansas Classic Reprint written by Erasmus Haworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Underground Waters of Southwestern Kansas All terrestrial water comes primarily from the ocean, whence it is taken by evaporation. It may then be carried by the winds to the f ar thest portions Of the dry-land areas and deposited on the surface of the ground, principally as rain, but partially as snow, mist, fog, or dew. NO ground water available to man in any portion Of our globe has had or can have any other ultimate source, whether we consider the wats r near the surface or that more deeply buried. Water thus left upon the dry land deports itself in a variety of ways, dependent upon the different conditions under which it is placed. A large portion is evaporated directly from the surface before it has had an Opportunity to run Off or to be absorbed by the soil or to penetrate to greater depths. Of that which is absorbed, large portions are ultimately dissipated by evaporation from growing vegetation. A sec ond portion runs from the plains and hillsides down into the streams and rapidly returns to the ocean whence it came, while a smaller por tion more gradually works its way into the same streams by seeps and Springs and reaches the same destination. Other port-ions soak into the soil and ground and serve as a permanent supply Of moisture in the soils and surface coverings; while still other but lesser parts Sink below the surface soils and below the roots Of vegetation, where they remain a constant source Of available water existing in sufficient quan tities to more. Than saturate the ground, and hence become'available when drill or spade penetrates it. Each Of these several methods of deportment is important to the student Of hydrology, and may there fore briefly be considered here. Book Bibliographic Review and Index of Papers Relating to Underground Waters

Download or read book Bibliographic Review and Index of Papers Relating to Underground Waters written by Myron L. Fuller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bibliographic Review and Index of Papers Relating to Underground Waters: Published by the United States Geological Survey 1870 1904 On the organization of the division of hydrology in 1903, and the beginning of systematic work on underground waters, an urgent need was felt for more definite information as to what had been published on the subject by both the National and the State surveys and in other publications. Plans were accordingly made for preparing a bibliography of underground waters, but it was soon found that owing to inadequate indexes it would be necessary to scan nearly every page of geologic publications. As this was not feasible, it became necessary to limit the work, for the time at least, to the preparation of a review and index of the publications of the United States Geological Survey. These publications, amounting to about 400 volumes and embracing about 1,500 papers, were examined, many of them page by page, and brief summaries of the facts relating to underground waters were compiled. A large proportion of the references to underground waters are given in connection with geologic descriptions, and most of them are very brief, although some are of importance. Being incidental to discussions of other subjects, many would doubtless be ordinarily overlooked, especially as in a large number of cases no reference is made to them in the indexes. There are about 600 titles in the bibliography, an average of about 21 for each year from 1880 to 1903, but in 1904, owing to the publication of the results of the systematic work of the new division of hydrology, this number was increased to about 130. In preparing the index two distinct classes of readers were kept in mind, the first including those who are interested in the underground-water resources of special regions, and the second those interested in some particular type of ground water or in one or more of the many problems of ground-water occurrence.
