Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Man's understanding of how this planet is put together and how it evolved has changed radically during the last 30 years. This great revolution in geology - now usually subsumed under the concept of Plate Tectonics - brought the realization that convection within the Earth is responsible for the origin of today's ocean basins and conti nents, and that the grand features of the Earth's surface are the product of ongoing large-scale horizontal motions. Some of these notions were put forward earlier in this century (by A. Wegener, in 1912, and by A. Holmes, in 1929), but most of the new ideas were an outgrowth of the study of the ocean floor after World War II. In its impact on the earth sciences, the plate tectonics revolution is comparable to the upheaval wrought by the ideas of Charles Darwin (1809-1882), which started the intense discussion on the evolution of the biosphere that has recently heated up again. Darwin drew his inspiration from observations on island life made during the voyage of the Beagle (1831-1836), and his work gave strong impetus to the first global oceanographic expedition, the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872- 1876). Ever since, oceanographic research has been intimately associ ated with fundamental advances in the knowledge of Earth. This should come as no surprise. After all, our planet's surface is mostly ocean.

Book excerpt: Man's understanding of how this planet is put together and how it evolved has radically changed during the last twenty years. This great revolution in geology now usually subsumed under the concept of Plate Tectonics and its ramifications - was an outgrowth of the study of the ocean floor. In its impact on the earth sciences, it is comparable to the revolution brought about by Charles Darwin (1809-1882) a century ago. The evolution of the biosphere was the focal point at that time. We are now discussing the evolution of the lithosphere, the uppermost 100 km of the Earth. Darwin drew his inspiration from observations made during the voyage of the Beagle, and his work gave strong impetus to the first global oceanographic expedition, the voyage of HMS Challenger (1872-1875). Ever since, oceanographic research has been intimately associated with fundamental advances in the knowledge of Earth. This should come as no surprise. After all, our planet's surface is mostly ocean. This booklet is the result of our conviction that to study introductory geology and oceanography and environment al science, one needs a summary of the tectonics and morphology of the sea floor, of the geologic processes active in the deep sea and in shelf seas, and of the climatic re cord in deep sea sedi ments. Our aim is to give abrief survey of these topics.

Book Continental Shelves of the World

Download or read book Continental Shelves of the World written by F.L. Chiocci and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.

Book Geology and Archaeology

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Harff
  • Publisher : Geological Society of London
  • Release : 2016-01-05
  • ISBN : 1862396914
  • Pages : 295 pages

Download or read book Geology and Archaeology written by J. Harff and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2016-01-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sea-level change has influenced human population globally since prehistoric times. Even in early phases of cultural development human populations were faced with marine regression and transgression as a result of changing climate and corresponding glacio-isostatic adjustment. Global marine regression during the last glaciation changed the palaeogeography of the continental shelf, converting former marine environments to attractive terrestrial habitats for prehistoric humans. These areas of the shelf were used as hunting and gathering areas, as migration routes between continents, and most probably witnessed the earliest developments in seafaring and marine exploitation, until the postglacial transgression re-submerged these palaeo-landscapes. Based on modern marine research technologies and the integration of large databases, proxy data are increasingly available for the reconstruction of Quaternary submerged landscapes. Also, prehistoric archaeological remains from the recent sea bottom are shedding new light on human prehistoric development driven by rapidly changing climate and environment. This publication contributes to the exchange of ideas and new results in this young and challenging field of underwater palaeoenvironmental investigation.
