This book was released on 1968 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 1,200-foot core hole drilled near Eel Point on the west coast of San Clemente Island, California, penetrated a homogeneous series of andesite flows varying in thickness from 11 to 169 feet. Petrographic examination revealed that textural variations within flows as a result of different cooling rates are more distinct than differences in composition between individual flows. Potassium-argon dates indicate that these flows were extruded in less than one-half million years during Miocene time. The flows are inferred to dip seaward at between 10 and 30 degrees. The rock will provide sound material for excavation. Problems of water leakage can be expected at faults and zones of decomposed rock. (Author).

Download or read book Unlocking the Power of Academic Vocabulary with Secondary English Language Learners written by Yu Ren Dong and published by Maupin House Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2013 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Unlocking the Power of Academic Vocabulary, Dr. Yu Ren Dong, an associate professor of English education at Queens College, City University of New York, helps secondary teachers expand their instructional repertoire to teach academic vocabulary in a systematic, meaningful, contextualized, and exciting way. Every secondary, subject-matter teacher will find strategies, easy-to-integrate activities, and tips on selecting words and planning lessons. As you teach with these strategies, your English language learners will be able to: tap into prior knowledge through cross-language transfer and cross-cultural comparisons; use concept-based vocabulary, such as analogies, metaphorical language, themes, sources, inquiry, and graphic organizers; interact with new words in context to decipher euphemisms, words with multiple meanings, connotation, and context clues; engage in interactive read-alouds, think-alouds, and wordplay; and master vocabulary through writing. Charts, student examples, suggested resources, and subject-matter vocabulary lists give teachers the hands-on tools they need to teach the concepts behind words as well as the actual definitions, spelling, and sounds. Transform your academic vocabulary instruction into an engaging, skill-building mix that carries over into students' reading, writing, thinking, and conversations in all subject areas.
Download or read book Secondary Science Teaching for English Learners written by Edward G. Lyon and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2016-06-13 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary Science Teaching for English Learners: Developing Supportive and Responsive Learning Context for Sense-making and Language Development provides a resource for multiple audiences, including pre- and in-service secondary science teachers, science teacher educators, instructional coaches, curriculum specialists, and administrators, to learn about a research-based approach to teaching science that responds to the growing population of English learners in the United States. The book offers clear definitions of pedagogical practices supported by classroom examples and a cohesive framework for teaching science in linguistically diverse classrooms. The Secondary Science Teaching with English Language and Literacy Acquisition (or SSTELLA) Framework addresses how learning science is enhanced through meaningful and relevant learning experiences that integrate discipline-specific literacy. In particular, four core science teaching practices are described: (1) contextualized science activity, (2) scientific sense-making through scientific and engineering practices, (3) scientific discourse, and (4) English language and disciplinary literacy development. These four core practices are supported by sound theory and research based on unscripted guidelines and flexible modifications of science lessons. Moreover, the four interrelated practices promote students’ use of core science ideas while reading, writing, talking, and doing science, thus reflecting principles from Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts, and English language proficiency standards. Secondary Science Teaching provides readers with a historical and theoretical basis for integrating language, literacy, and science in multilingual science classrooms, and well as explicit models and guided support teachers in enacting effective teaching practices in the classroom, including comparative vignettes to distinguish between different types of classroom practice.
