Book Geologic Field Trips in Northern Oregon and Southern Washington Classic Reprint

Download or read book Geologic Field Trips in Northern Oregon and Southern Washington Classic Reprint written by John D. Beaulieu and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geologic Field Trips in Northern Oregon and Southern Washington The geology of Oregon is as varied and fascinating as that of any state of the Union. East of Port land lies the north-south trending Cascade Range, 0 snow-capped volcanic pile. Farther east lie flood basalts, batholithic highs, and Basin and Range terrain. West of the Cascades the interaction of land, sea, and volcanism has left a challenging geologic record. In tune with geologic developments around the world, the plate tectonic model is finding increasing application to the geol09y of the State of Oregon. The imbricate thrust complex of Mesozoic rocks in southwestern Oregon has been attributed to sea-floor spreading, and recently the enigmas associated with the Colebrooke Schist have begun to yield to analysis in terms of the new tectonics. Recent work in the Tertiary units about the periphery of the Klamath Mountains may soon lead to an even more accurate appraisal of the age and nature of the later stages of plate tectonic activity in that area Closer to home, the Coast Range is largely unmapped and is ripe for reinterpretation in terms of the new tectonics. The fault blocks, basalt flows, and ignimbrites of southeastern Oregon are undergoing re-evaluation in terms of some of the subtler aspects of sea-floor spreading. Tensional shearing related to deep - seated upwelling may account for the tapping of basaltic magma at depth and for the regional development of block faulting. Similar mechanisms may account for the extensive flood basalts of the Columbia River Group to the north. Both may be part of a larger picture in which late Miocene re - orientations of plate tectonic features profoundly affected the ge0109y of much of the Pacific Basin and the world. Going back in time, the early and middle Tertiary andesites of the Cascades Range and the John Day Basin may be interpreted as volcanic material produced by differential melting of a Iithospheric plate related to an ancestral Pacific Basin rise system. Still further back in time, many of the Paleozoic exposures of northeastern Oregon may represent structural slabs of oceanic rock brought together in a subduction zone by sea-floor spreading. Viewed in this light, our failure to relate the various units stratigraphically is not only understandable, it is to be expected. With the present day stratigraphic techniques, perhaps our aim should be to understand the structural relationships of the units and to reserve final stratigraphic synthesis until later. Book Geology of the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book Geology of the Pacific Northwest written by William N. Orr and published by Waveland Press. This book was released on 2006-12-04 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The geologic history of the Pacific Northwest is as unique as the region itself. Created via tectonic plate movements and accretionary events, the original terranes were subsequently covered by sedimentary layers, ash, lavas, and glacial debris. These processes, begun millions of years ago, continue to affect the area, as seen in the eruption of Mount St. Helens and catastrophic Japanese tsunamis created by earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest. Understanding of the regions geology has led to new insight in volcanic eruption prediction, disaster preparedness, the environmental effects of mining, and urban development as it relates to geologic hazards. The Orrs detailed and informative writing style appeals to those with geologic training as well as beginners with an interest in the region. Each chapter covers a specific subregion, allowing for maximum flexibility both in the classroom and for the casual reader. The authors central theme that continental plate tectonics are the fundamental processes of Northwest geologic history permeates throughout the book.

Book Field Volcanology A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson

Download or read book Field Volcanology A Tribute to the Distinguished Career of Don Swanson written by Michael P. Poland and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 2018-10-11 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Don Swanson, who received the GSA Mineralogy, Geochemistry, Petrology, and Volcanology Division's Distinguished Geologic Career award in 2016, has adopted a detailed, field-oriented approach to studying problems of great volcanologic importance across a range of compositions and spatio-temporal scales. Swanson's work has resulted in a series of fundamental contributions that have advanced understanding of the Columbia River flood basalts, Cascade volcanic arc, and Hawai'i, and his insights have been applied not only around the world, but across the solar system. This volume emphasizes the role of field volcanology as a window into better understanding volcanic processes past and present, and highlights, in particular, those places and processes where Swanson's insights have been particularly impactful.
