Book Geologic Analysis of Devonian Shale Cores

Download or read book Geologic Analysis of Devonian Shale Cores written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company was awarded a DOE contract in December 1977 for field retrieval and laboratory analysis of cores from the Devonian shales of the following eleven states: Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The purpose of this project is to explore these areas to determine the amount of natural gas being produced from the Devonian shales. The physical properties testing of the rock specimens were performed under subcontract at Michigan Technological University (MTU). The study also included LANDSAT information, geochemical research, structural sedimentary and tectonic data. Following the introduction, and background of the project this report covers the following: field retrieval procedures; laboratory procedures; geologic analysis (by state); references and appendices. (ATT).

Book ANALYSIS OF DEVONIAN BLACK SHALES IN KENTUCKY FOR POTENTIAL CARBON DIOXIDE SEQUESTRATION AND ENHANCED NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION

Download or read book ANALYSIS OF DEVONIAN BLACK SHALES IN KENTUCKY FOR POTENTIAL CARBON DIOXIDE SEQUESTRATION AND ENHANCED NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proposed carbon management technologies include geologic sequestration of CO2. A possible, but untested, strategy is to inject CO2 into organic-rich shales of Devonian age. Devonian black shales underlie approximately two-thirds of Kentucky and are generally thicker and deeper in the Illinois and Appalachian Basin portions of Kentucky. The Devonian black shales serve as both the source and trap for large quantities of natural gas; total gas in place for the shales in Kentucky is estimated to be between 63 and 112 trillion cubic feet. Most of this natural gas is adsorbed on clay and kerogen surfaces, analogous to the way methane is stored in coal beds. In coals, it has been demonstrated that CO2 is preferentially adsorbed, displacing methane at a ratio of two to one. Black shales may similarly desorb methane in the presence of CO2. If black shales similarly desorb methane in the presence of CO2, the shales may be an excellent sink for CO2 with the added benefit of serving to enhance natural gas production. The concept that black, organic-rich Devonian shales could serve as a significant geologic sink for CO2 is the subject this research. To accomplish this investigation, drill cuttings and cores will be selected from the Kentucky Geological Survey Well Sample and Core Library. CO2 adsorption analyses will be performed in order to determine the gas-storage potential of the shale and to identify shale facies with the most sequestration potential. In addition, new drill cuttings and sidewall core samples will be acquired to investigate specific black-shale facies, their uptake of CO2, and the resultant displacement of methane. Advanced logging techniques (elemental capture spectroscopy) will be used to investigate possible correlations between adsorption capacity and geophysical log measurements.

Book Core analysis results comprehensive study wells Devonian shale

Download or read book Core analysis results comprehensive study wells Devonian shale written by D. L. Luffel and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three important results have been determined based on extensive core analyses on 539 feet of conventional core recovered from four comprehensive study wells in the Devonian shale in the Appalachian area, and based on new methods of core analyses developed. First relatively high values of porosity and free gas space are present, especially in the black organic rich shales. In this study unstressed porosity averages 4.5 to 7.6 percent and bulk volume of gas averages 1.5 to 3.8 percent; previous reports show porosity of 2 to 3 percent and bulk volume of gas 0.1 to 0.2 percent. Second, gas permeabilities have been measured for the first time at native fluid saturations and at in situ pressure. Permeabilities were from 0.04 to 12 microdarcies in five core plugs from very shaly sandstones or siltstones, and burrowed silty shales that were low in kerogen. The other 27 core plugs, which were mostly black organic rich shales, has gas permeabilities too low to measure (lower than 0.01 microdarcies). Third, a new method of deriving kerogen content has been developed using geochemisty measurements of total organic carbon and rock pyrolysis. Results show kerogen content is significantly higher that that derived from thin-section petrography, which is the analytical method normally used, by about 50 percent in the kerogen rich rocks.

Book Analysis of Stratigraphic Structural and Production Relationships of Devonian Shale Gas Reservoirs in Meigs County Ohio

Download or read book Analysis of Stratigraphic Structural and Production Relationships of Devonian Shale Gas Reservoirs in Meigs County Ohio written by Mark T. Baranoski and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The following report details an analysis of Devonian shale reservoirs in Meigs County as part of a five-county study conducted from late 1985 through 1988 for the Gas Research Institute. The final project report was completed in November 1988. The overall objective of this research was to provide a standardized and usable Devonian shale database. The data included subsurface stratigraphy, well drilling, completion and production information, which would be useful to the industry for natural gas resource analyses and also to Ohio citizens and landowners. ... Currently, horizontal drilling for Devonian shale resources is in its early and largely unproven stages. This shallow-subsurface geologic data also can be utilized indirectly to assist resource and structural analyses of deeper subsurface horizons. Since this report was compiled in 1986, approximately 80 wells have been drilled to the Ohio Shale in Meigs County. However, the manuscript has not been updated with these new wells, as it was determined that an update would not significantly change the maps and results of the study. Revised paleontological work reported in Pennsylvania (Harper, 1993) has resulted in moving the Devonian-Mississippian boundary to the top of the Berea Sandstone. We have not implemented this change in this report. With that stated, the maps, results, and data are made available for resource and structural assessment, both shallow and deep, and for information to interested landowners and the public at large."--Preface.
