Book Type Studies From the Geography of the United States

Download or read book Type Studies From the Geography of the United States written by Charles A. McMurry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-16 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Type Studies From the Geography of the United States: 1st Series This little book is designed to outline and illustrate a plan for the study of geography in third and fourth grades. After a closer survey of home objects in third grade, it lays the scene of operations for the fourth grade in the Mississippi Valley. A series of type studies of great fullness and detail is worked out, with the aim of making geography thoroughly instructive and stimulating to children. The "Pioneer History Stories of the Mississippi Valley" are used in the same grade and cover exactly the same area as the geography topics, so that the relation between history and geography is intimate and many-sided. The natural science topics treated in the grade are also largely suggested by the geography and history. This enables us, therefore, to illustrate more fully the plan of concentration of studies discussed in the "General Method." This book is one of a series of Special Methods, treating of the selection and quality of the best materials furnished by the separate studies, and points out the particular application of general principles to these materials. The others are as follows: Special Method in Literature and History, especially the oral treatment of stories in primary and intermediate grades. The history course for grammar grades is also discussed and outlined. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Child s Geography and History of St Louis City written by Sisters of Saint Joseph and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Child's Geography and History of St. Louis City In order to follow the requirements of our manual, it will doubtless be found necessary to give Third Grade classes, drills in the General Questions concerning the state, before entering on the chapter - Navigation on the Mississippi. It has been proposed that this book be used in the fourth quarter of the Second Grade, that on taking up the work of the Third Grade, pupils may be accustomed to the reading of the lessons. The teacher will be the best judge as to the ability of the pupil to take in "Navigation on the Mississippi and Railroads" before obtaining the required information concerning their State. Motions of the earth should be taught by means of a small globe. Definitions of natural divisions may be given as dictation exercises to be copied from the board. The Fourth Grade, requiring United States in outline, bring i the questions given under General Review. The teacher should select those she deems most suitable. The Fourth Grade should be provided with a map of the United States showing the principal railroads. By this means the various places to be reached from their own city may be traced, and the manner of travel described. The thirty-six squares of a township should be drawn by pupils in Second Grade by east and west, north and south lines. The map of the city should be drawn in parts according as the class becomes acquainted with the various localities, then the map of the State, and finally of the United States tracing the work from pupil's own State. Next map drawing should be that of North America, with review of the work previously learned. The Miscellaneous Questions may be used at the option of the teacher but map drawing in every step of this work should be insisted upon. In this way the directions of the manual for Third and Fourth Grades will be followed. The book should accomplish all Geographical work required in Second, Third, and Fourth Grades.
