Book A Geospatial Analysis of Indoor Radon Gas Distribution in Marquette County Michigan

Download or read book A Geospatial Analysis of Indoor Radon Gas Distribution in Marquette County Michigan written by Mathew A. Hay and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radon gas is a significant public health problem that contributes to some cases of lung cancer. This thesis analyzes and determines the potential degree of radon gas exposure hazard in Marquette County, MI, by combining multiple layers of geospatial data in a geographic information system (GIS). The combined data are processed and assessed for statistically significant spatial patterns and correlations among multiple variables. Household indoor radon gas samples from locations throughout Marquette Country are the basis of the project. The results of this study will add to existing radon gas hazard research. In Marquette County, I have identified predictors based on correlated spatial attributes among indoor radon gas measurements, census variables (including rural and vacant housing), and geological features (including bedrock type and aeromagnetism), as identified in the existing literature. This thesis specifies the problem of the study, describes the significance of the problem, presents a comprehensive background of the subject, presents a detailed description of the methodology used in the study, discusses results of the study, and presents future recommendations for radon gas research.

Book Environmental Justice

Download or read book Environmental Justice written by Maruti Chowdary Bathula and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radon is a chemical element that is naturally occurring and is produced during the disintegration of uranium. It is a radioactive gas that is carcinogenic in nature. The majority of the Ohio State population residing in uranium shale localities and uranium laden soil is at greater risk of being exposed to higher indoor radon concentrations. According to the US Environmental protection Agency (EPA), a concentration greater than or equal to 4 pCi/l (picocuries per liter) is considered hazardous and needs to be acted upon. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the threshold level is at 2.7 pCi/l. The fair treatment and involvement of all people regardless of race, income, nationality in the administration of environmental laws and policies is Environmental Justice (EJ). This study uses Ohio indoor radon concentrations and census demographic data of the year 2017 to identify vulnerable census tracts susceptible to EJ issues using Geographic Information System (GIS). Also, the degree of Social Vulnerability (SV) which is the measure of vulnerable population in a block group to the exposure of higher indoor radon concentrations is determined. Geographic Zoning Value (GZV) method is developed in the current study to estimate the mean concentrations of indoor radon in census tracts. The vulnerable locations concerning EJ issues are identified in the State of Ohio by plugging output from GZV to the EJSCREEN Method2017 and ZS Silverman Method 2012. Results from both the methods are collected, compared, and analyzed with the same goal of identifying EJ issues. The EJSCREEN Method 2017 uses EJSCREEN (Version 2019) [1] analysis and the ZS Silverman Method 2012 is used to develop the EJ index to determine the extent of injustice present in a given census tract using the analysis proposed by Silverman (2012) [2]. The results indicate that 95% of the State of Ohio has no significant environmental inequality for the year 2017 according to EJSCREEN Method 2017. Environmental Justice Hazard Score (EJHS) is used in ZS Silverman Method 2012 to determine the EJ and 87% of buffer zones fall under limited to moderate category (0 ≤ EJHS ≤ 14) and the rest falling under high (14

Book Radon Levels and Surficial Geology Analyzed with Geographic Information Systems Chautauqua County New York

Download or read book Radon Levels and Surficial Geology Analyzed with Geographic Information Systems Chautauqua County New York written by Bryan Mentley and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1998 the Chautauqua County Health Department was awarded a $27,000 grant from the New York State health Department to partially fund a local indoor air radon testing and outreach program. The purpose of this program was to increase radon testing in individual homes, identify locations posing a high risk to radon exposure, and increase public awareness of the radon problem. A geographic Information System (GIS) was used as an aid to evaluate the spatial distribution of test data. Coordinates of each home tested were determined using two methods; coordinates for homes within the cities of Dunkirk, Jamestown and surrounding areas were calculated using address matching (i.e. geocoding), while coordinates for homes in the remainder of the county were determined using GPS surveying. A total of 953 radon measurements were taken at 863 homes throughout the county. Based on the 894-test data set (excludes duplicate samples), radon results ranged from 0.1 to 96.1 pCi/L, with an average concentration of 4.4 pCi/L and a standard deviation of 8.8. The relationship between surficial geology and radon levels was evaluated by comparing the radon test results coverage with the USGS Surficial Geology-Western New York State coverage. Results indicated that 47.8% of test in houses on coarse-grained sediment are above the USEPA action level (4.0 pCiL); whereas a only 16.1% of the tests in houses on fine-grained sediment are above the action level. This information was used to develop a map showing priority-testing areas in Chautauqua County. Future radon outreach and testing efforts will place a greater emphasis on testing homes in porous, coarse grained sediments (e.g., sand and gravel). -- Author abstract

Book Spatial Analysis And GIS

Download or read book Spatial Analysis And GIS written by S Fotheringham and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2013-04-08 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geographic information systems represent an exciting and rapidly expanding technology via which spatial data may be captured, stored, retrieved, displayed, manipulated and analysed. Applications of this technology include detailed inventories of land use parcels. Spatial patterns of disease, geodemographics, environmental management and macroscale inventories of global resources. The impetus for this book is the relative lack of research into the integration of spatial analysis and GIS, and the potential benefits in developing such an integration. From a GIS perspective, there is an increasing demand for systems that do something other than display and organize data. From a spatial analytical perspective, there are advantages to linking statistical methods and mathematical models to the database and display capabilities of a GIS. Although the GIS may not be absolutely necessary for spatial analysis, it can facilitate such an analysis and moreover provide insights that might otherwise have been missed. The contributions to the book tell us where we are and where we ought to be going. It suggests that the integration of spatial analysis and GIS will stimulate interest in quantitative spatial science, particularly exploratory and visual types of analysis and represents a unique statement of the state-of-the-art issues in integration and interface.

The book starts with two keynote papers on hydrogeology and on climatology and atmospheric pollution, followed by forty contributions. The content of this book is foremost practical. The editors have endeavored to compile a set of papers in which the readers could perceive how geostatistics is applied within environmental sciences. A few selected methodological and theoretical contributions are also included. The papers are organised in the following sections: Air Pollution / Climate; Environment; Health / Ecology; Hydrology; Methods; Soil Science / Site Remediation. presenting applications varying from delineation of hazardous areas, monitoring water quality, space-time modeling of sand beaches, areal rainfall estimation, air pollution monitoring, multivariate conditional simulation, soil texture analysis, fish abundance analysis, tree productivity index estimation, radionuclide migration analysis, wombling procedure, tracer tests modeling, direct sequential co-simulation to stochastic modeling of flow and transport. Audience: This publication will be of great interest and practical value to geostatisticians working both in academia and in industry.
