Book The Geographical Structure of Epidemics

Download or read book The Geographical Structure of Epidemics written by Peter Haggett and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ways in which the great plagues of the past and present have spread around the world remains only partly understood. Peter Haggett's research over the last thirty years has focused on mapping and modelling the paths by which epidemics spread through human communities. In 1998 this led tohim being invited to give the inaugural lectures in a new series, the Clarendon Lectures in Geography and Environmental Studies. The resulting book, Geographical Structure of Epidemics, presents an accessible, concise, and well illustrated account of how environmental and geographical concepts canbe used to enhance our knowledge of the origins and progress of epidemics, and sometimes to slow to slow or halt their spread.

  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book Geographers written by Hayden Lorimer and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 34 of Geographers: Biobibliographical Studies features eight essays that together demonstrate geographers' diverse scholarly engagement with the practise of their subject. There are two physical geographers (a Frenchman and an Englishman, both geomorphologists), a British historical geographer, a French colonial geographer, a Russian explorer-naturalist of Central Asia and Tibet, a British-born but long-time Australian resident and scholar of India, Pakistan, and the Pacific world, an American regionalist and eugenicist, and a Scots-born long-time American resident, one of the world's leading Marxist geographers and urban theorists. Equally but differently committed to geography's many specialisms, these subjects wonderfully illuminate the vibrancy – and the contradictions – behind the living of geographical lives.

Book Drama Of Fiji

  • Author : John Wesley Coulter
  • Publisher : Tuttle Publishing
  • Release : 1989-12-15

Download or read book Drama Of Fiji written by John Wesley Coulter and published by Tuttle Publishing. This book was released on 1989-12-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of Fiji focuses on the period of Imperial British control and offers a fascinating glimpse at a unique and volatile situation. The drama unfolds with a look into the backgrounds of the native Fijians—subsistence farmers most of whom are hardly affected by modern progress. Complications arise with the introduction of the Indian migrants who were recruited to serve periods of indenture on sugar cane plantations. Nearly all of them were Hindus. They yearned for land—the most valuable property in India. The plot further thickens with the "dual government" set–up where a governor, appointed by the Queen, works side by side with the Fijian Administration which has jurisdiction over all Fijians in the Colony. The Drama of Fiji is based on three periods of fieldwork in those islands at intervals over a period of 23 years, visit to northern India, and relevant literature. The last visit to Fiji, in 1960, was part of a large project in the South Pacific, made possible by a combined grant-in-aid of research, given by the Association of American Geographers and the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati, the latter of which awarded a subvention to the author for this book.

  • Publisher : Macmillan

Download or read book World Regional Geography written by Lydia Mihelic Pulsipher and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2005-01-05 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scale of [this book] encompasses vast continents and global forces, but often its descriptive focus on individual lives has the most impact. Stories of people and families make the study of geography compelling. Students begin to grasp the complex patterns at work in the world today as they see how people are affected by, and respond to, economic, social, and political processes. Through these stories of individual lives, [the authors] hope to convey the impact of globalization, a major theme of the text. To highlight global to local and interregional connections, the text includes a number of topics that have no borders: the war on terrorism, realignments in the global political order, interregional trade, the global economy, popular culture, the environment, and the Internet. Here, again, the focus on the individual person provides insight, offering local perspectives on these global trends.-Preface.
