The sinking of cold lithosphere into the mantle is thought by many authors to be the most important source of energy for plates driving forces. It also deeply modifies the thermal and chemical structure of the mantle, producing arc volcanism and is responsible for the release of most of the seismic energy on Earth. There has been considerable achievements done during the past decades regarding the complex interactions between the various processes acting in subduction zones. This volume contains a collection of contributions that were presented in June 2007 in Montpellier (France) during a conference that gave a state of the art panorama and discussed the perspectives about "Subduction Zone Geodynamics". The papers included in this special volume offer a unique multidisciplinary picture of the recent research on subduction zones geodynamics. They are organized into five main topics: Subduction zone geodynamics, Seismic tomography and anisotropy, Great subduction zone earthquakes, Seismogenic zone characterization, Continental and ridge subduction processes. Each of the 13 papers collected in the present volume is primarily concerned with one of these topics. However, it is important to highlight that papers always treat more than one topic so that all are related lighting on different aspects of the complex and fascinating subduction zones geodynamics.

After a decade of intense and productive scientific cooperation between geologists, geophysicists and geochemists the International Geodynamics Program formally ended on July 31, 1980. The scientific accomplishments in more than seventy scientific reports and in this series of Final Report volumes. The concept of the Geodynamics Program, as a natural successor to the Upper Mantle Project, developed during 1970 and 1971. The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) and the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) then sought support for the new program from the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). As a result the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics was established by ICSU to manage the International Geodynamics Program.

Book excerpt: Data collected by personnel of the Geophysics Group at Oregon State University and the Instituto Oceanografico of the Direccion General de Oceanografia are used to construct a free-air anomaly map for the central part of the Pacific continental margin of Mexico, which shows the gravity expression of major structural features in the region. Specific features are the Middle America and Rivera trenches intersected by a possible extension of the Rivera Fracture Zone, and the Ulloa Trough on the western side of Baja California. Of particular importance are gravimetric minimums with no bathymetric expression observed east of the Tres Marias Islands, southeast and northwest of the Tamayo Fracture Zone, and as extensions of the bathymetrically mapped series of en echelon faults within the Gulf of California. A geophysical model cross section constructed along a profile southeast of the Tres Marias Islands indicates a continental type crust east of the islands with a Moho depth of 13 km at the base of the Tres Marias Scarp and dipping toward the continent. The structure at the transition zone between oceanic and continental crust suggests active subduction of the oceanic crust in the past followed by a period of shear or strike-slip motion. The thickness of the sediments along the cross section and east of the Tres Marias Islands reaches 1.5 km.
