Book excerpt: "This report presents the second edition of a 'Geodynamic Synthesis of the Phanerozoic of Eastern Australia', the first edition being published in 2009. The original Record was undertaken with two aims: (1) to better understand the tectonic and geodynamic setting of known mineral deposits within eastern Australia, and (2) to provide a predictive capability for extending potential regions of known mineralisation and delineating regions with potential for new mineral styles and commodities. This was achieved by synthesising geological and metallogenic data on a regional, largely orogenic, basis. This allowed the identification of geological and metallogenic events and geodynamic cycles, and the production of regional geological syntheses and accompanying time-space-event plots. These regional syntheses were used to produce an interpreted geological, metallogenic and geodynamic synthesis of eastern Australia. This synthesis provided the geodynamic framework to constrain known mineralisation and allow a predictive capability for potential new mineralisation. Since the first edition, significant new geological information and tectonic models have appeared for most parts of eastern Australia, along with the definition and/or redefinition of many geological provinces, sub-provinces and igneous associations. Book excerpt: "Structural Control” remains a crucial point that frequently lacks in any scientific and/or economic analysis of ore deposits, whatever their type and class. The case of lode deposits is exemplary, although also other deposits, like breccia pipe, stockwerk, massive sulphides, skarn, etc., can, surprisingly, be concerned. Several concepts like the gold-bearing shear zone have not proven valid during the last few decades in terms of our understanding of gold deposit and have been totally abandoned. Additionally, the relationships between magmatism, regional tectonic context, and mineralization remain uncertain and have been debated in several recent publications. This demonstrates that this issue is still relevant, and its solution may help in the distinction between intrusion-related and orogenic deposits. In this Special Issue, we particularly invite any case study of mineral deposits, in which it has been demonstrated that structural geology may have a significant role in the establishment of the deposit model of formation and/or on exploration and exploitation programs. Examples in which the structural model diverges from those described in the classical literature are particularly welcomed, including studies in which relationships with magmatism can be suspected and/or demonstrated. Indeed, all cases that illustrate concepts that differ from the classic ones and from theoretical models may represent significant contributions to this volume.

This IGCP Project focussed on nine research objectives: 1) Comparison of Archean and Proterozoic supracrustal assemblages to more fully understand differences between Archean and post-Archean tectonic regimes; 2) To more fully understand the geochemical differences between Archean and post-Archean sediments and to evaluate the various factors that control sediment composition; 3) From combined U/Pb zircon and whole-rock Sm/Nd studies, to see if the apparent 2.4-2.0 continental crust "generation gap" is real; 4) To employ new techniques in the dating of individual zircons to more fully understand Proterozoic tectonic history and the role of crustal reworking; 5) From trace element ratios and Nd isotopic data from basalts, to better understand Proterozoic mantle evolution; 6) To encourage more detailed studies of the anorogenic granite-anorthosite association to better understand its origin and significance in terms of crustal evolution; 7) From combined Nd, Pb, and Sr isotopic data, to more precisely estimate the amount of new continental crust formed during the Proterozoic; 8) To encourage joint P-T and geochronological studies of Proterozoic and high-grade terranes to better understand Proterozoic orogenesis: and 9) To try and understand why hydrothermal precious metal deposits are relatively rare in the Proterozoic compared to both the Archean and the Phanerozoic. The book should be of interest to professionals in the geosciences (especially geochemists, petrologists and structural geologists) and graduate students in the same fields.
