The International Geodynamics Project focussed attention on processes within the earth responsible for the movement of the lithospheric blocks. At anyone time, strong tectonic activity appears limited to a few mobile belts. Most of the present-day seismic activity is confined to the Circum-Pacific belt, the Alpide belt and the mid-oceanic ridges. These belts include oceanic and continental rift systems, the island arcs and young folded mountains. Continent to continent collision of the Eurasian and the Indian plates is generally believed to be responsible for the origin of the Himalaya, the tectonics of this region and the neighbouring south and central Asia. To focus attention on geodynamic problems in this relatively much less known Alpine-Himalayan region bounded by Iran in the West and Burma in the East, the Inter-Union Commission on Geodynamics formed a separate Working Group 3b under the Chairmanship of Hari Narain. Later, in 1975, this Working Group 3b on "Geodynamics of the Alpine-Himalayan region, East" was given independant status and re-numbered as Working Group 6.

In this book, the authors have described the technique based on finite element method in which only eight (or twelve) nodal observed gravity values are used for the regional computation, thereby eliminating the possible contamination of anomalous fields and also the technique does not assume an explicit model and physical properties like density of rocks etc. in the regional computation. The book discusses the advantages of this technique viz., it is not site-specific; the computation is independent of any prior assumptions as to the form and depth of shallow or deeper structures; it can handle data distributed at random or on a regular grid on the map space; and the neighbouring surveys join smoothly. It is known that continental flood basalts and major dyke swarms have their origin related in some way to the up-rise of hot mantle plumes which may lead to rifting and eventual continental break-up. Dykes signify crustal extension and are important indicators of crustal stabilisation events, supercontinental assembly and dispersal, crust-mantle interaction and play a significant role in the delineation of crustal provinces as well as in deciphering crustal evolution events. Many economic mineral deposits of the world are also associated with a variety of dykes. This publication summarizes the work done on these very active basaltic volcanoes. Piton de la Fournaise has a long history of scientific research and monitoring, with many data collected during recent eruptions. It is certainly one of the most studied volcanoes in the world. The work presented in this monograph includes geological, geophysical, geochemical and petrological aspects, but also studies on physical geography, natural hazards and the sociological and behavioural approaches.' The Karthala volcano may be less well known, but it serves as an interesting comparison to Piton de la Fournaise. Although situated close to the volcanoes of Hawaii, it differs from them by its more alkaline magmas and less frequent activity. It was also monitored for more than 25 years, producing extraordinary eruptions in recent years.
