Book Lectures on Closed Geodesics

Download or read book Lectures on Closed Geodesics written by W. Klingenberg and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of existence of c10sed geodesics on a Riemannian manifold and the properties of the corresponding periodic orbits in the geodesic flow has been the object of intensive investigations since the beginning of global differential geo metry during the last century. The simplest case occurs for c10sed surfaces of negative curvature. Here, the fundamental group is very large and, as shown by Hadamard [Had] in 1898, every non-null homotopic c10sed curve can be deformed into a c10sed curve having minimallength in its free homotopy c1ass. This minimal curve is, up to the parameterization, uniquely determined and represents a c10sed geodesic. The question of existence of a c10sed geodesic on a simply connected c10sed surface is much more difficult. As pointed out by Poincare [po 1] in 1905, this problem has much in common with the problem ofthe existence of periodic orbits in the restricted three body problem. Poincare [l.c.] outlined a proof that on an analytic convex surface which does not differ too much from the standard sphere there always exists at least one c10sed geodesic of elliptic type, i. e., the corres ponding periodic orbit in the geodesic flow is infinitesimally stable.

Book A Tour of Subriemannian Geometries Their Geodesics and Applications

Download or read book A Tour of Subriemannian Geometries Their Geodesics and Applications written by Richard Montgomery and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Subriemannian geometries can be viewed as limits of Riemannian geometries. They arise naturally in many areas of pure (algebra, geometry, analysis) and applied (mechanics, control theory, mathematical physics) mathematics, as well as in applications (e.g., robotics). This book is devoted to the study of subriemannian geometries, their geodesics, and their applications. It starts with the simplest nontrivial example of a subriemannian geometry: the two-dimensional isoperimetric problem reformulated as a problem of finding subriemannian geodesics. Among topics discussed in other chapters of the first part of the book are an elementary exposition of Gromov's idea to use subriemannian geometry for proving a theorem in discrete group theory and Cartan's method of equivalence applied to the problem of understanding invariants of distributions. The second part of the book is devoted to applications of subriemannian geometry. In particular, the author describes in detail Berry's phase in quantum mechanics, the problem of a falling cat righting herself, that of a microorganism swimming, and a phase problem arising in the $N$-body problem. He shows that all these problems can be studied using the same underlying type of subriemannian geometry. The reader is assumed to have an introductory knowledge of differential geometry. This book that also has a chapter devoted to open problems can serve as a good introduction to this new, exciting area of mathematics.

Book Riemannian Manifolds and Homogeneous Geodesics

Download or read book Riemannian Manifolds and Homogeneous Geodesics written by Valerii Berestovskii and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is devoted to Killing vector fields and the one-parameter isometry groups of Riemannian manifolds generated by them. It also provides a detailed introduction to homogeneous geodesics, that is, geodesics that are integral curves of Killing vector fields, presenting both classical and modern results, some very recent, many of which are due to the authors. The main focus is on the class of Riemannian manifolds with homogeneous geodesics and on some of its important subclasses. To keep the exposition self-contained the book also includes useful general results not only on geodesic orbit manifolds, but also on smooth and Riemannian manifolds, Lie groups and Lie algebras, homogeneous Riemannian manifolds, and compact homogeneous Riemannian spaces. The intended audience is graduate students and researchers whose work involves differential geometry and transformation groups.

Book Behavior of Distant Maximal Geodesics in Finitely Connected Complete 2 dimensional Riemannian Manifolds

Download or read book Behavior of Distant Maximal Geodesics in Finitely Connected Complete 2 dimensional Riemannian Manifolds written by Takashi Shioya and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph studies the topological shapes of geodesics outside a large compact set in a finitely connected, complete, and noncompact surface admitting total curvature. When the surface is homeomorphic to a plane, all such geodesics behave like those of a flat cone. In particular, the rotation numbers of the geodesics are controlled by the total curvature. Accessible to beginners in differential geometry, but also of interest to specialists, this monograph features many illustrations that enhance understanding of the main ideas.

Book excerpt: In the series of volumes which together will constitute the "Handbook of Differential Geometry" we try to give a rather complete survey of the field of differential geometry. The different chapters will both deal with the basic material of differential geometry and with research results (old and recent). All chapters are written by experts in the area and contain a large bibliography. In this second volume a wide range of areas in the very broad field of differential geometry is discussed, as there are Riemannian geometry, Lorentzian geometry, Finsler geometry, symplectic geometry, contact geometry, complex geometry, Lagrange geometry and the geometry of foliations. Although this does not cover the whole of differential geometry, the reader will be provided with an overview of some its most important areas. . Written by experts and covering recent research . Extensive bibliography . Dealing with a diverse range of areas . Starting from the basics

Download or read book Discrete Groups written by Kenʼichi Ōshika and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2002 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with geometric and topological aspects of discrete groups. The main topics are hyperbolic groups due to Gromov, automatic group theory, invented and developed by Epstein, whose subjects are groups that can be manipulated by computers, and Kleinian group theory, which enjoys the longest tradition and the richest contents within the theory of discrete subgroups of Lie groups. What is common among these three classes of groups is that when seen as geometric objects, they have the properties of a negatively curved space rather than a positively curved space. As Kleinian groups are groups acting on a hyperbolic space of constant negative curvature, the technique employed to study them is that of hyperbolic manifolds, typical examples of negatively curved manifolds. Although hyperbolic groups in the sense of Gromov are much more general objects than Kleinian groups, one can apply for them arguments and techniques that are quite similar to those used for Kleinian groups. Automatic groups are further general objects, including groups having properties of spaces of curvature 0. Still, relationships between automatic groups and hyperbolic groups are examined here using ideas inspired by the study of hyperbolic manifolds. In all of these three topics, there is a ``soul'' of negative curvature upholding the theory. The volume would make a fine textbook for a graduate-level course
