Book excerpt: An instant New York Times Bestseller! “Unreasonably entertaining . . . reveals how geometric thinking can allow for everything from fairer American elections to better pandemic planning.” —The New York Times From the New York Times-bestselling author of How Not to Be Wrong—himself a world-class geometer—a far-ranging exploration of the power of geometry, which turns out to help us think better about practically everything. How should a democracy choose its representatives? How can you stop a pandemic from sweeping the world? How do computers learn to play Go, and why is learning Go so much easier for them than learning to read a sentence? Can ancient Greek proportions predict the stock market? (Sorry, no.) What should your kids learn in school if they really want to learn to think? All these are questions about geometry. For real. If you're like most people, geometry is a sterile and dimly remembered exercise you gladly left behind in the dust of ninth grade, along with your braces and active romantic interest in pop singers. If you recall any of it, it's plodding through a series of miniscule steps only to prove some fact about triangles that was obvious to you in the first place. That's not geometry. Okay, it is geometry, but only a tiny part, which has as much to do with geometry in all its flush modern richness as conjugating a verb has to do with a great novel. Shape reveals the geometry underneath some of the most important scientific, political, and philosophical problems we face. Geometry asks: Where are things? Which things are near each other? How can you get from one thing to another thing? Those are important questions. The word "geometry"comes from the Greek for "measuring the world." If anything, that's an undersell. Geometry doesn't just measure the world—it explains it. Shape shows us how.

Book Geometric Morphometrics for Biologists

Download or read book Geometric Morphometrics for Biologists written by Miriam Zelditch and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of Geometric Morphometrics for Biologists has been the primary resource for teaching modern geometric methods of shape analysis to biologists who have a stronger background in biology than in multivariate statistics and matrix algebra. These geometric methods are appealing to biologists who approach the study of shape from a variety of perspectives, from clinical to evolutionary, because they incorporate the geometry of organisms throughout the data analysis. The second edition of this book retains the emphasis on accessible explanations, and the copious illustrations and examples of the first, updating the treatment of both theory and practice. The second edition represents the current state-of-the-art and adds new examples and summarizes recent literature, as well as provides an overview of new software and step-by-step guidance through details of carrying out the analyses. - Contains updated coverage of methods, especially for sampling complex curves and 3D forms and a new chapter on applications of geometric morphometrics to forensics - Offers a reorganization of chapters to streamline learning basic concepts - Presents detailed instructions for conducting analyses with freely available, easy to use software - Provides numerous illustrations, including graphical presentations of important theoretical concepts and demonstrations of alternative approaches to presenting results

Book Fun and Games With Math

Download or read book Fun and Games With Math written by Ouida Simmons and published by Tales Not Soon Forgotten. This book was released on 2004-02 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world." Buddah Certainty for Uncertainty is a powerful collection of undisputed facts that have the capacity to enhance our spiritual thoughts and expand our awareness of the reality of God's existence and the true presence of the human Soul. Certainty from Uncertainty examines the words and thoughts of many of the world's greatest philosophers, scientists, intellectuals, and metaphysicians and develops through their thoughts a compelling argument for the existence of God, the Soul, and the evolution of the human Soul to Omega Consciousness (a state of human consciousness in which the consciousness of God and humankind are identical). Dr. Prato takes the reader for a hand-in-hand walk with the world's greatest thinkers and intellectuals. Without a preaching to the choir tone, he appeals to skeptics and believers alike, presenting compelling evidence of God's existence from many of the brightest minds in our history outside the religious realm. What were the spiritual thoughts of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; of renowned scientists such as Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, Niels Bohr, Werner Heisenberg, Henry Margenau, and many others nearly all Nobel Prize winners? What thoughts of God did Baruch Spinoza, Wilhelm Liebniz, Larry Dossey and David Bohm have in common? Does the history of the thoughts of these profound thinkers allow us to understand how they came to a near-identical belief in the Universal Presence? How do their thoughts coincide with the thoughts of the Prophet David when he wrote his timeless 23rd Psalm? Certainty From Uncertainty raises the veil on these magnificent intuitive connections. Of Certainty From Uncertainty Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words and Recovering the Soul says: The great task of a lifetime is to find our way to the Absolute or God, however conceived. This "spiritual text" is a guide for our time, which many people who are engaged in spiritual work will find immensely helpful. Peter Prato shows us there is a final common pathway uniting science, spirituality and healing. His message is about unity, which our age desperately needs to recover. Certainty From Uncertainty leads us through these esoteric thoughts, filled with mystery and wonder, into the realm of the miracle and the near-death experience, then to Omega Consciousness--a state of being where humans become fully integrated with the consciousness of God.

Teaching suggestions are offered to classroom teachers and other non-specialists, so that classroom-reading activities may be extended into group discussions, co-operative learning-arts projects, and creative performances. Appended are extensive resource lists for further integrated arts teaching in the classroom.

Book The Impact of Learning to Read on Visual Processing

Download or read book The Impact of Learning to Read on Visual Processing written by Tânia Fernandes and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 75 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading is at the interface between the vision and spoken language domains. An emergent bulk of research indicates that learning to read strongly impacts on non-linguistic visual object processing, both at the behavioral level (e.g., on mirror image processing – enantiomorphy) and at the brain level (e.g., inducing top-down effects as well as neural competition effects). Yet, many questions regarding the exact nature, locus, and consequences of these effects remain hitherto unanswered. The current Special Topic aims at contributing to the understanding of how such a cultural activity as reading might modulate visual processing by providing a landmark forum in which researchers define the state of the art and future directions on this issue. We thus welcome reviews of current work, original research, and opinion articles that focus on the impact of literacy on the cognitive and/or brain visual processes. In addition to studies directly focusing on this topic, we will consider as highly relevant evidence on reading and visual processes in typical and atypical development, including in adult people differing in schooling and literacy, as well as in neuropsychological cases (e.g., developmental dyslexia). We also encourage researchers on nonhuman primate visual processing to consider the potential contribution of their studies to this Special Topic.

Book excerpt: I spent the first twenty six years of my life in Rome. I used to go for ice cream to a popular place near the Pantheon and I remem ber the excitement I felt, beyond the chocolate and whipped cream, when I entered this ancient Roman temple. After staring at the "shower" of light coming from the circular opening at the center of the dome, as strong as a spotlight, I remember being attracted almost hypnotically to the place below the opening. I remember counting the coffers carving the concave dome, com posed in five rows of circular arrays, and could feel the power and protection created by the concave space. I also recall going every Sunday to Piazza San Pietro. This Baroque square is well known for its colonnades, which have an oval shape defined by two interlocking circles. For each of these circles there is a mark, located approximately at its center, from which the four aligned rows of columns appear as one. Before entering the church, almost as a part of a ritual, I had to find the mark in the pavement of the oval square. I was amazed by how the rows of columns could appear and disappear according to my position in relation to the mark:.
