He has love affairs with women in most ports but his main ambition is to leave the harsh discipline of the naval life behind him. After seven years in the navy he fulfills his ambition and joins a passenger ship where his exploits with women passengers and stewardesses all but kill him. He signs off the ship and returns to England contemplating a monk like existence only to discover that he cannot hide from the temptations of the flesh that surrounds him. He now comes to the conclusion that the escapades in his life are too much for him. After much thought he develops quite a successful plan on how to combat the situation. The plan eventually changes his whole way of life thereby allowing him to live a normal life.

Personal idiosyncrasies melded into a strangely uniform pattern of rejection or resistance to the Allied occupiers, with attendant repressed feelings and self-pity. Politics was once again perceived as remote, dirty business. It was feared that the least concession of guilt would bring down even more severe sanctions on their discipline. Using tools from the history of mentality, such as analysis of serial publications, these tendencies are examined. The perspective of emigré physicists, as reflected in their private letters and reports, embellish this portrait.
