At the behest of her godfather Winston Churchill, the adventurous journalist Mattie McGary, a rising star in William Randolph Hearst's press empire, and her lover, Bourke Cockran Jr., a New York law school professor and former Army counterintelligence agent, get involved. A brutal struggle opposes the old Germany and the new; the reactionary industrialists backing Kaiser Wilhelm II versus the racist radicals behind the Nazis and their leader, Adolf Hitler. Winston Churchill is drawn into the fray. An epic quest to recover an ancient Christian artifact, the Spear of Destiny, is underway! The spear was used by Roman centurion Longinus to pierce the side of Christ to end His suffering on the cross. But the spear—long on display at Vienna's Hofburg Museum—is suddenly missing. Hitler wants it every bit as much as the Kaiser and Winston Churchill. Mattie travels to the Austrian Alps on a danger-filled search for the spear. When Cockran joins her, both their lives and their romance are in jeopardy because of the handsome and mysterious leader of her expedition who saves her life and seeks to seduce her. Will she find the spear and retain Cockran's love? Churchill, Hitler, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Eugenics, The Spear of Destiny, The Order of the New Templars, Anti-Semitism, Nazi

Download or read book Pursuits of Happiness written by Jack P. Greene and published by Univ of North Carolina Press. This book was released on 2004-01-21 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Jack Greene reinterprets the meaning of American social development. Synthesizing literature of the previous two decades on the process of social development and the formation of American culture, he challenges the central assumptions that have traditionally been used to analyze colonial British American history. Greene argues that the New England declension model traditionally employed by historians is inappropriate for describing social change in all the other early modern British colonies. The settler societies established in Ireland, the Atlantic island colonies of Bermuda and the Bahamas, the West Indies, the Middle Colonies, and the Lower South followed instead a pattern first exhibited in America in the Chesapeake. That pattern involved a process in which these new societies slowly developed into more elaborate cultural entities, each of which had its own distinctive features. Greene also stresses the social and cultural convergence between New England and the other regions of colonial British America after 1710 and argues that by the eve of the American Revolution Britain's North American colonies were both more alike and more like the parent society than ever before. He contends as well that the salient features of an emerging American culture during these years are to be found not primarily in New England puritanism but in widely manifest configurations of sociocultural behavior exhibited throughout British North America, including New England, and he emphasized the centrality of slavery to that culture.

Book Idle Pursuits

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Throughout this study, idleness is shown to be a key element of self-presentation beginning with the figure of the idle aristocrat. The extravagant display of a life of leisure made Gilles de Rais the icon of aristocratic idleness. But even the hardworking humanist was anxious to assume a studied posture of idleness. If both figures were eager to display idleness, it was because oisivete was an important source of what modern theorists have termed symbolic capital. Finally, the Renaissance also saw the birth of a new figure of the "idler": the consumer of leisure. For it was leisure itself along with chivalric and amorous adventure that was consumed by the readers of the popular Amadis series. At once a commodity and form of capital, idleness (otium) clearly belonged to the realm of social exchanges ostensibly reserved for affairs (negotium)."--BOOK JACKET.

Our hero, Don Pedro Togeiro, has joined Spain's greatest military commander, Don Gonzalo Fernandez of Cordoba, the Gran Capitan himself, to expel the marauding French forces from Italy, while his sultry raven-haired Moorish wife, Raquel, has accompanied Princess Juana to Flanders for her wedding to the womanising Archduke Philip of Austria where he savagely assaults her. Meanwhile, the dynastic Borgias are scandalising Rome and in the Indies Christopher Columbus continues his search for gold, convinced that he's reached China. Spain is on the threshold of greatness as Isabel and Fernando forge its destiny, but fate intervenes. Famine, earthquake and disease decimate Spain, while the tragic death of three heirs to the throne and the growing madness of heiress Juana draw Spain inexorably into the Habsburg Empire. Spain's Pursuit of Destiny: The Columbus Years, Howard Headworth's brilliant follow-up to The Al-Andalus Chronicle, has a rich blend of personal drama, historical detail and a superb sense of place. Raquel's ordeal, Pedro's kidnap in Tuscany and the epic battle of Cerignola are laid like bright tapestries before our present-day eyes. When Pedro's family, following the destruction of their castle-home, decide to seek new pastures in the West Indies, the picture is complete, and we have Spain's chequered destiny in a nutshell.
