Book This Old Man and the Sea

Download or read book This Old Man and the Sea written by Robert S. Ashton and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08-03 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sun was setting and the only place to anchor was at the entrance to a small stream. With anchor down, we jumped into a dinghy to explore the dense jungle the stream penetrated. After a hundred yards or so, we stopped the outboard. Now the fauna slowly recovered from our racket and jungle noises began: bugs, birds, and mystery sounds. We saw colorful parrots and then-by the hundreds-the brilliant scarlet ibis. Then monkeys! Totally quiet, they watched us intently, warily, irritated by our encroachment into their world.

Book Northwest Sea Disasters

Download or read book Northwest Sea Disasters written by Leif Terdal and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Northwest waters off Oregon and Washington pose unique dangers to boaters. All of the navigable bars that a boater must cross to reach the ocean, such as the Tillamook Bay Bar, the Columbia River and Depoe Bay are hazardous. When a boat is in danger or actually sinks, the Coast Guard comes to the rescue. Search and rescue itself poses hazards, often times compounded by delayed or inaccurate distress calls from the captain. In addition the captain may fail to provide timely communication and leadership to crew and passengers during the crises. This book reviews the sinking of five charter boats. Four of them, the Pearl-C, Cougar, Gambler, and the Taki-Tooo accounted for the greatest loss of life in the charter boat industry in Oregon and Washington. Survivors of these charter boats provide vivid and dramatic accounts of the sinkings and search and rescue. We also review the sinking with the loss of life of the Aleutian Enterprise in the Bering Sea, crab boats off the Oregon and Washington coast, as well as the loss of the Sea King during a storm as it was being towed across the Columbia River bar. We focus on the human element in decision making during emergencies at sea, and provide guidelines for boaters to consider their own experiences at sea with respect to safety. An understanding of the hazards on our Northwest waters are important to recreational boaters who go on their private boats to fish off shore.

  • Publisher : Open Road Media

  • Pages : 125 pages

Download or read book Drake written by Ernle Bradford and published by Open Road Media. This book was released on 2014-04-01 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authoritative biography of British explorer Sir Francis Drake, from the bestselling author of The Great Siege. Long considered one of the great heroes of British history, Sir Francis Drake was a brilliant navigator, intrepid explorer, and fearsome warrior in Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Navy. He was also a pirate and profiteer who made a small fortune trading slaves. In this compelling biography, Ernle Brandford offers an unvarnished and finely detailed portrait of this complex and influential man. Born to impoverished parents in Devon, Drake rose to power by his own efforts. In his most famous expedition, he sailed around South America through the Strait of Magellan, opening new trade routes for Great Britain. Continuing across the Pacific and around the tip of Africa, he became the first Englishman to sail around the world. Drake also played a key role in the defeat of the Spanish Armada when England was threatened with invasion in 1588. Vastly outnumbered, he led raids into Spanish ports, destroying dozens of ships. But while tales of his exploits have been told for generations, few authors have approached the story of his life with as much depth, authority, and honesty as Bradford.
