Les auteurs montrent comment genres et régimes de genre sont des outils et des produits des crises et des compétitions, aussi bien pour les hommes que pour les femmes de l'Occident altimédiéval.

Sans rejeter cette grille d'analyse, il faut souligner l'extrême diversité des sociétés post-antiques d'une part, leurs caractères communs fondamentaux de l'autre : ce sont des sociétés agraires, guerrières et compétitives, dominées par des élites qui mettent en avant le peuple en armes pour mieux légitimer leur domination. Ce sont des sociétés segmentaires où l'équilibre social et la protection des individus sont très largement assurés par des groupements contractuels à forte dominante horizontale. La christianisation d'une grande partie de l'Europe occidentale, le développement des systèmes domaniaux et la concentration des pouvoirs centraux à partir du VIIe siècle renforcent la domination des puissants et la hiérarchisation de la société. Les Carolingiens entreprennent alors une véritable mise en ordre hiérarchique qui touche tous les secteurs de la vie sociale, en s'appuyant sur les structures monastiques et intégratives d'un empire ayant vocation à s'identifier à l'ecclesia. Nourri de l'apport des sciences sociales, l'ouvrage propose donc une lecture anthropologique et sociologique du haut Moyen Age. A travers l'analyse des systèmes de représentation, du rapport des hommes à l'espace et à Dieu, des relations entre les individus et les groupements, il cherche à éclairer les rapports sociaux et les processus de transformation entre le VIe et la fin du IXe siècle.

Book excerpt: TURKISH MIGRATION POLICY, edited by Ibrahim Sirkeci and Barbara Pusch, aims to shed light on changes in migration policy, determinants beneath these changes, and practical implications for movers and non-movers in Turkey. Nevertheless, one should note that Turkey has only recently faced mass immigration and the number of foreign born has more than doubled in less than five years. Such sudden change in population composition warrants policy adjustments and reviews. Policy shift from "exporting excess labour" in the 1960s and 1970s to immigrant integration today is a drastic but necessary one. Nevertheless, Turkish migration policy is still far from settled as several chapters in this book point out. Despite the exemplary humanitarian engagement in admitting Syrians, Turkey is still at the bottom of the league table of favourable integration policies with an overall score of 25 out of 100. Turkish migration policy is likely to be adjusted further in response to the continuing immigration.
