Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorghum crop provides the bulk of the animal feed in Sudan where the second largest animal wealth in Africa exists; yet attempts to develop improved types of forage sorghum were lacking or very few. This book presents the first endeavor in the Sudan to explore the potential of locally developed forage sorghum hybrids. Most of our present knowledge about combining ability in sorghum was based on studies carried in temperate environments with materials limited to photoperiod conversion program. In this work, local genetic stocks beside exotic ones were used under tropical conditions . The heterosis study revealed significant gains in forage yield over the existing maxima including the introduced commercial hybrid. Since the exotic material may transfer unwelcome traits to their progenies, the choice of local x local hybrids was recommended. Scientists and workers in hybrid seed industry may find this book interesting, as it introduces them to the potentialities of sorghum variability in Sudan.Students of genetics and plant breeding may also find this book informative, specifically in the area of heterosis and genetic analysis.

Book Genetic and Combining Ability Analysis of Some Agronomic and Grain Quality Characters in Sorghum

Download or read book Genetic and Combining Ability Analysis of Some Agronomic and Grain Quality Characters in Sorghum written by J.G.E.de FRANCA and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to evaluate the combining ability, heterosis and variance components of a set of selected restorers and male sterile in sorghum for the following characters: days to 50% flowering, plant height, panicle length, grain yield per panicle, number of grains per panicle, thousand grain weight, grain breaking strength, % floaters, % water absorption, flour particle size index, rolling quality of the dough and gel spreading. Twenty parental lines - 11 male steriles and 9 restorers and their 99 hybrids formed the experimental material. parents and hybrids were palnted in adjancent trials in a RBD design with threee replications each. The combining ability analysis followed a line x tester mating system. The experiments were carried out under rainfed conditions during the rainy (kharif) and post-rainy (Rabi) seasons of 1982 at ICRISAT Center, patancheru, A.P., India. Significant variation was observed in the genotypes studied for most of the charactrs analysed. Generally the restorers showed larger variation than the male sterile lines. Significant levels of heterosis and heterobeltiosis were observed for plant height, grain yield per panicle, grain number per panicle and % floaters. Dominace was in the direction of earliness, increased height, panicle length, grain number and yield, decreased seed weight, % floaters, flour particle size and gel spreading. The results revealed that most of the agronomic and grain quality characters were highly influenced by additive gene action. (...).

Book Heterosis Combining Ability and Gxe Interactions in Sweet Sorghum

Download or read book Heterosis Combining Ability and Gxe Interactions in Sweet Sorghum written by Chapara Rani and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Combining ability analysis revealed predominance of non-additive gene action for days to 50 per cent flowering, days to maturity, plant height, brix per cent, total soluble solids, total sugar index, juice yield, juice extraction per cent and grain yield. Therefore heterosis breeding is suggested for these traits whereas additive gene action is important for total biomass, fresh stalk yield and ethanol yield hence, simple selection would be effective for these traits. Among the parents, RS 1220B, CSV 19SS and SSV 74 were found to be good general combiners, while the cross combinations viz., NSS 1007A x CSV 19SS and NSS 1016A x SSV 84 showed good specific combining ability coupled with high per se performance for ethanol yield. Hence, highly suitable for heterosis breeding. Based on stability, the hybrids viz., NSS 8A x SSV 84 and NSS 1007A x CSV 19SS for ethanol yield, juice yield and total biomass were found to be stable with well adaptation to all environments."

Book Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability Among Sorghum Conversion Lines

Download or read book Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability Among Sorghum Conversion Lines written by Rafael Arturo Mateo Moncada and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of AFLP markers allowed the identification of five strong clusters through estimates of genetic similarities. This classification did not group the lines by either their genetic background or their fertility reaction. This study provides information to identify specific combinations that would help to understand heterotic relationships in sorghum, and support the suggestions made by Menz and Gabriel that races in sorghum are not well defined.

Book Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum

Download or read book Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum written by Sanjana Reddy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-05-28 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic Enhancement of Rabi Sorghum – Adapting the Indian Durras presents both the historical background and the recent research done in breeding this important world crop for more global production. Its chapters cover topics in origin and taxonomy, morphology and breeding behavior, genetics, and cytogenetics, also looking at production, nutrition, and alternate uses. The durra race is Ethiopian in origin and its introgression with wild forms permitted adaptation to drier conditions. These have migrated and adapted to the currently known crop that is cultivated in the winter season and commonly called rabi sorghums. Grown under receding soil moisture conditions, rabi sorghums have tolerance to abiotic stresses apart from biotic stresses, unlike the rainy sorghums that are grown widely in the world. However, they must be more resilient to rapid changes in climate, for example. The variability from winter sorghums is being introgressed into rainy sorghums. With the yield plateaus reached and sorghum gaining importance as a food crop, this book will be of importance to those studying durras and their breeding. Presents both the historical background and most recent research done in breeding rabi sorghum for more global production Provides information on the adaptation of the crop and the ways it has migrated to the currently known crop, which is cultivated in winter season and commonly called as rabi sorghum Explores strategies for resilience as the crop must be prepared to withstand rapid and varying changes in climate
