Book Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability Among Sorghum Conversion Lines

Download or read book Genetic Diversity and Combining Ability Among Sorghum Conversion Lines written by Rafael Arturo Mateo Moncada and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of AFLP markers allowed the identification of five strong clusters through estimates of genetic similarities. This classification did not group the lines by either their genetic background or their fertility reaction. This study provides information to identify specific combinations that would help to understand heterotic relationships in sorghum, and support the suggestions made by Menz and Gabriel that races in sorghum are not well defined.

Book Genetic Variation and Covariation in Hybrids of New Restorer and Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Lines of Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench from the World Collection

Download or read book Genetic Variation and Covariation in Hybrids of New Restorer and Cytoplasmic Male Sterile Lines of Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench from the World Collection written by R. de P. NUNES and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic varation was investigated among 16 new restorer lines (R-lines) selected from the World Sorghum Collection, and one chemically induced mutant and its normal sib, used as male parents, and 14 newly developed cytoplasmic male sterile lines (A-lines) and four standard commercial A-lines, used as female parents. The 18 R-lines were divide in two groups. The 16 lines from the World Sorghum Colletion were first randomly subdivided into two groups of eight. The two ramaining R-lines were added to each of the two groups of eight so that each of the two groups of males was composed of 10 lines. The eight new R-lines were referred to as random males because they were regarded as a random sample from a much larger number of phenotypically desirable R-lines that could be identified in the World Sorghum Collection. The induced mutant and its normal sib were called fixed males. Similarly, the 14 new A-lines were divided at random into two groups of seven. The four standard male sterile lines were added to each of the groups so that both groups of females had 11 lines. The 14 newly developed A-lines were called random females because they were regarded as a random sample from a much larger number of phenotypically desirable A-lines that could be developed from the World Sorghum Colletions. The four standard A-lines were called fixed females because they were deliberately closen. Each of the two groups of males was matched at random with one of the two groups of famales. As a result, two "AB" overall mating (...).

Book I Diallel Cross Analysis of Stomatal Density and Leaf blade Area in Grain Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench II Biochemical Characterization of Six Trisomics of Grain Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench

Download or read book I Diallel Cross Analysis of Stomatal Density and Leaf blade Area in Grain Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench II Biochemical Characterization of Six Trisomics of Grain Sorghum Sorghum Bicolor L Moench written by H. W. Suh and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of a 6-variety diallel revealed that general and specific combinig abilities were highly significant for stomatal density and leaf-blade area. Interactions of genotypes x location were also highly significant for both characters. For stomatal density, overdominance was indicated and one gene (or one block of genes) was involved; heritability estimate was 51 percent. For leaf-blade area, again overdominance was indicated and at least one gene controlled that trait; estimate of heritability was 18 percent. Regression coefficient of Wr on Vr of both characters deviated slighly from unity which could be due to epistasis or correlated gene distribution, or both. Dominace order of the parents was ks 9, Redlan, Combine kafir 60, KS 18, ks 24, and Martin for stomatal density and KS 9, Martin, Redlan, KS 18, KS 24, and Combine Kafir 60 for leaf-blade area. The significant interaction of gea x location and the highly significant interaction of sca x location for stomatal density and the highly significant interaction of sca x location for leaf-blade area imply that the breeding program attempting to improve these characters should tend toward producing individual lines for each different environment. Stomatal density varies from one species to another and is influenced by many factors. Ornrod and Renney (1968) found that 20 out of 35 weed specied had significantly more stomata on the abaxial than on the adaxial leaf surface. Environnmental conditions under which a plant is grown also influence stomatal density.(...).
