Book excerpt: This paper describes a real-time or faster-than-real-time simulation of gas turbine engines, using an ultra high speed, multi-processor digital computer, designated the AD100. It is shown that the frame time is reduced significantly without any loss of fidelity of a simulation. The simulation program is aimed at a high degree of flexibility to allow changes in engine configuration. This makes it possible to simulate various types of gas turbine engines, including jet engines, gas turbines for vehicles and power plants, in real-time. Some simulation results for an intercooled-reheat type industrial gas turbine are shown.

The book contains one introductory and four main chapters. The introductory chapter describes the area of modeling of gas and wind turbines and shows the demand for further improvement of the models. The first three main chapters offer particular improvements in gas turbine modeling. First, a novel methodology for the modeling of engine starting is presented. Second, a thorough theoretical comparative analysis is performed for the models of engine internal gas capacities, and practical recommendations are given on model applications, in particular for engine control purposes. Third, multiple algorithms for calculating important unmeasured parameters for engine diagnostics are proposed and compared. It is proven that the best algorithms allow accurate prognosis of engine remaining lifetime.The field of wind turbine modeling is presented in the last main chapter. It introduces a general-purpose model that describes both aerodynamic and electric parts of a wind power plant. Such a detailed physics-based model will help with the development of more accurate control and diagnostic systems.In this way, this book includes four new studies in the area of gas and wind turbine modeling. These studies will be interesting and useful for specialists in turbine engine control and diagnostics.

Book excerpt: Current commercial `state of the art' engine simulation software is of a low fidelity. Individual component performance characteristics are typically represented via nondimensional maps with empirical adjustments for off-design effects. Component nondimensional characteristics are usually obtained through the averaging of experimental readings from rig test analyses carried out under nominal operating conditions. In those cases where actual component characteristics are not available and default maps are used instead, conventional simulation tools can offer a good prediction of the performance of the whole engine close to design point, but can deviate substantially at of design and transient conditions. On the other hand, even when real component characteristics are available, zero-dimensional engine cycle simulation tools can not predict the performance of the engine at other than nominal conditions satisfactorily. Low-fidelity simulation tools are generally incapable of analyzing the performance of individual engine components in detail, or capturing complex physical phenomena such as inlet flow distortion. Although the available computational power has increased exponentially over the last two decades, a detailed, three-dimensional analysis of an entire propulsion system still seems to be so complex and computationally intensive as to remain cost-prohibitive. For this reason, alternative methods of integrating different types and levels of analysis are necessary. The integration of simulation codes that model at different levels of fidelity into a single simulation provides the opportunity to reduce the overall computing resource needed, while retaining the desired level of analysis in specific engine components. Book excerpt: The unsteady compressible inviscid flow is characterized by the conservations of mass, momentum, and energy; or simply the Euler equations. In this paper, a study of the subsonic one-dimensional Euler equations with local preconditioning is presented using a modal analysis approach. Specifically, this study investigates the behavior of airflow in a gas turbine engine using the specified conditions at the inflow and outflow boundaries of the compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine, to determine the impact of variations in pressure, velocity, temperature, and density at low Mach numbers. Two main questions motivate this research: 1) Is there any aerodynamic problem with the existing gas turbine engines that could impact aircraft performance? 2) If yes, what aspect of a gas turbine engine could be improved via design to alleviate that impact and to optimize aircraft performance? This paper presents an initial attempt to model the flow behavior in terms of their eigenfrequencies subject to the assumption of the uncertainty or variation (perturbation). The flow behavior is explored using simulation outputs from a customer-deck model obtained from Pratt & Whitney. Variations of the main variables (i.e., pressure, temperature, velocity, density) about their mean states at the inflow and outflow boundaries of the compressor, combustion chamber, and turbine are modeled. Flow behavior is analyzed for the high-pressure compressor and combustion chamber utilizing the conditions on their left and right boundaries. In the same fashion, similar analyses are carried out for the high-pressure and low-pressure turbines. In each case, the eigenfrequencies that are obtained for different boundary conditions are examined closely based on their probabilistic distributions, a result of a Monte Carlo 10,000 sample simulation. Furthermore, the characteristic waves and wave response are analyzed and contrasted among different cases, with and without preconditioners. The results revea
