  • Author : Cathleen Kaveny

Download or read book Law s Virtues written by Cathleen Kaveny and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-20 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Can the law promote moral values even in pluralistic societies such as the United States? Drawing upon important federal legislation such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, legal scholar and moral theologian Cathleen Kaveny argues that it can. In conversation with thinkers as diverse as Thomas Aquinas, Pope John Paul II, and Joseph Raz, she argues that the law rightly promotes the values of autonomy and solidarity. At the same time, she cautions that wise lawmakers will not enact mandates that are too far out of step with the lived moral values of the actual community. According to Kaveny, the law is best understood as a moral teacher encouraging people to act virtuously, rather than a police officer requiring them to do so. In Law’s Virtues Kaveny expertly applies this theoretical framework to the controversial moral-legal issues of abortion, genetics, and euthanasia. In addition, she proposes a moral analysis of the act of voting, in dialogue with the election guides issued by the US bishops. Moving beyond the culture wars, this bold and provocative volume proposes a vision of the relationship of law and morality that is realistic without being relativistic and optimistic without being utopian.

Book Who Knew

Download or read book Who Knew written by Romy Shiller PHD and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-11 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who Knew? is a continuation of Romy Shillers book You Never Know: A Memoir. Romy is considered a medical mystery and applies her previous interest and scholarly work on the body to her new physical reality. Romys intense belief that we can meet and overcome challenges prompted her to write this book. People expect distress when faced with a life-altering situation. Who Knew? proves that there are options available to everyone when it comes to facing challenges. Romy looks at internalized ideas about the body. She provides a new approach to physicality (how we utilize the body) and image (how we perceive the body). Our culture is obsessed with looking a certain way. Opting out of conventional modes of appearance is liberating. This book and Romys attitude are not about denial; they are about acceptance. Acceptance for Romy does not preclude change. It is more about blending realities, weaving the idea of identity. Fluctuation and adaptation are important qualities. Romys non-malignant brain tumour operation and subsequent five-month coma have left her in a wheelchair, with a voice/speech impediment called dysarthria. Romy Shiller is proof we can overcome our challenges.

  • Publisher : Trafford Publishing
  • Release : 2009-04-24
  • ISBN : 1466975865
  • Pages : 114 pages

Download or read book Again written by Romy Shiller Ph.D. and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2009-04-24 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Again combines an academic exploration of reincarnation with real-life experiences. Using as a basis the altered reality of quantum physics, Romy Shiller extrapolates. It is for everyone. More than anything it is an insightful philosophy on life. Romy Shiller often uses her own examples as a part of the exploration. Shiller is at once researcher and subject of focus. Her take on Life is unique and interesting. Beyond her area of concentration, she often extrapolates and comments on the experience. Not only that but Shiller has invented her own rules for reincarnation. Shiller has coined a certain term. Her take on distinct aspects of reincarnation absolutely goes against popular suggestion. Her perspective on Time is distinctive. Ideas of the body are challenging to the reader and go against what most people take for granted. The nature of History is put into question. Romy Shiller, is considered a medical mystery. In 2003 she had a brain tumour removed and went into a five month coma. Afterwards she had Akinetic Mutism and did not speak until March 2004. How she personally negotiates shifts and fluctuations in her own life is remarkable to some.
