Book excerpt: The sixthInternational Conference on General Inequalities was held from Dec. 9 to Dec. 15, 1990, at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (Black Fa rest, Germany). The organizing committee was composed of W.N. Everitt (Birm ingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec ( Coimbra) served cheerfully and efficiently as secretary of the meeting. The con ference was attended by 44 participants from 20 countries. Yet again the importance of inequalities in both pure and applied mathematics was made evident from the wide range of interests of the individual participants, and from the wealth of new results announced. New inequalities were presented in the usual spread of the subject areas now expected for these meetings: Classical and functional analysis, existence and boundary value problems for both ordinary and partial differential equations, with special contributions to computer science, quantum holography and error analysis. More strongly than ever, the role played by modern electronic computers was made clear in testing out and prohing into the validity and structure of certain inequalities. Here the computer acts not only for numerical calculations of great complexity, but also in symbolic manipulation of complex finite structures. Prob lems in inequalities which even a few years ago were intractable, now fall to solution or receive direct and positive guidance as a result of computer applications. The interface between finite and infinite structures in mathematics and the versatility of modern computers is weil developed in the subject of general inequalities.

Book General Inequalities 5

Download or read book General Inequalities 5 written by WALTER and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fifth International Conference on General Inequalities was held from May 4 to May 10, 1986, at the Mathematisches Forschungsinstitut Oberwolfach (Black Forest, Germany). The organizing committee consisted of W.N. Everitt (Birmingham), L. Losonczi (Debrecen) and W. Walter (Karlsruhe). Dr. A. Kovacec served efficiently an'd enthusiastically as secretary to the con ference. The meeting was attended by 50 participants from 16 countries. In his opening address, W. Walter had to report on the death of five colleagues who had been active in the area of inequali ties and who had served the mathematical community: P.R. Beesack, G. Polya, D.K. Ross, R. Bellman, G. Szegö. He made special mention of G. Polya, who had been the last surviving author of the book InequaZities (Cambridge University Press, 1934), who died at the age of 97 years and whose many and manifold contributions to mathematics will be recorded elsewhere, in due course. Inequalities continue to play an important and significant role in nearly all areas of mathematics. The interests of the participants to this conference reflected the many different fields in which both classical and modern inequalities continue to influence developments in mathematics. In addition to the established fields, the lectures clearly indicated the importance of inequalities in functional analysis, eigenvalue theory, con vexi ty., number theory, approximation theory, probability theory, mathematical prograrnrning and economics.

Book General Inequalities 7

Download or read book General Inequalities 7 written by Catherine Bandle and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequalities continue to play an essential role in mathematics. The subject is per haps the last field that is comprehended and used by mathematicians working in all the areas of the discipline of mathematics. Since the seminal work Inequalities (1934) of Hardy, Littlewood and P6lya mathematicians have laboured to extend and sharpen the earlier classical inequalities. New inequalities are discovered ev ery year, some for their intrinsic interest whilst others flow from results obtained in various branches of mathematics. So extensive are these developments that a new mathematical periodical devoted exclusively to inequalities will soon appear; this is the Journal of Inequalities and Applications, to be edited by R. P. Agar wal. Nowadays it is difficult to follow all these developments and because of lack of communication between different groups of specialists many results are often rediscovered several times. Surveys of the present state of the art are therefore in dispensable not only to mathematicians but to the scientific community at large. The study of inequalities reflects the many and various aspects of mathemat ics. There is on the one hand the systematic search for the basic principles and the study of inequalities for their own sake. On the other hand the subject is a source of ingenious ideas and methods that give rise to seemingly elementary but nevertheless serious and challenging problems. There are many applications in a wide variety of fields from mathematical physics to biology and economics.

Book Factorizing the Classical Inequalities

Download or read book Factorizing the Classical Inequalities written by Grahame Bennett and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This memoir describes a new way of looking at the classical inequalities. The most famous such results, (those of Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson) may be interpreted as inclusion relationships, l[superscript italic]p [subset equality symbol] [italic capital]Y, between certain (Banach) sequence spaces, the norm of the injection being the best constant of the particular inequality. The inequalities of Hilbert, Hardy, and Copson all share the same space [italic capital]Y. That space -- alias [italic]ces([italic]p) -- is central to many celebrated inequalities, and thus is studied here in considerable detail.

The more than 1200 cited references include many from the last ten years which appear in a book for the first time. The 30 chapters are all devoted to inequalities associated with a given classical inequality, or give methods for the derivation of new inequalities. Anyone interested in equalities, from student to professional, will find their favorite inequality and much more.

Book Weighted Inequalities Of Hardy Type

Download or read book Weighted Inequalities Of Hardy Type written by Alois Kufner and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2003-04-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inequalities play an important role in almost all branches of mathematics as well as in other areas of science and engineering. This book surveys the present state of the theory of weighted integral inequalities of Hardy type, including modifications concerning Hardy-Steklov operators, and some basic results about Hardy type inequalities and their limit (Carleman-Knopp type) inequalities. It also describes some rather new fields such as higher order and fractional order Hardy type inequalities and integral inequalities on the cone of monotone functions together with some applications and open problems. The book can serve as a reference and a source of inspiration for researchers working in these and related areas, but could also be used for advanced graduate courses.

Book Inequalities In Analysis And Probability Third Edition

Download or read book Inequalities In Analysis And Probability Third Edition written by Odile Pons and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book introduces classical inequalities in vector and functional spaces with applications to probability. It develops new analytical inequalities, with sharper bounds and generalizations to the sum or the supremum of random variables, to martingales, to transformed Brownian motions and diffusions, to Markov and point processes, renewal, branching and shock processes. In this third edition, the inequalities for martingales are presented in two chapters for discrete and time-continuous local martingales with new results for the bound of the norms of a martingale by the norms of the predictable processes of its quadratic variations, for the norms of their supremum and their p-variations. More inequalities are also covered for the tail probabilities of Gaussian processes and for spatial processes. This book is well-suited for undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in theoretical and applied mathematics.
