Book Deprivation State Interventions and Urban Communities in Britain 1968 79

Download or read book Deprivation State Interventions and Urban Communities in Britain 1968 79 written by Peter Shapely and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on a series of policy initiatives from the late 1960s through to the end of the 1970s, this book looks at how successive governments tried to address growing concerns about urban deprivation across Britain. It provides unique insights into policy and governance and into the socio-economic and cultural causes and consequences of poverty. Starting with the impact of redevelopment policies, immigration and the rise of the ‘inner city’, this book examines the pressures and challenges that explain the development of policy by successive Labour and Conservative governments. It looks at the effectiveness and limits of different community development approaches and at the inadequacies of policy in tackling urban deprivation. In doing so, the book highlights the restricted impact of pilot projects and reform of public services in resolving deprivation as well as the broader limits of social planning and state welfare. Crucially, it also plots the shift in policy from an emphasis on achieving statutory service efficiencies and rolling out social development programmes towards an ever-greater stress on regeneration and support for private capital as the solution to transforming the inner city.

Book Housing and Race in Industrial Society

Download or read book Housing and Race in Industrial Society written by David H. McKay and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-26 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comparative study of the relationship between civil rights law, housing and urban policy in Britain and the United States. It focuses on the ways in which governments have attempted to remove racial discrimination and disadvantage in private and public sector housing. The study, first published in 1977, does not simply consist of an account of administrative and judicial attempts to remove discrimination. A major concern is to place civil rights laws in their total political, economic and social environments. The book explains and compares the nature of racial residential change in both countries, and assesses the impact of civil rights law on existing patterns of discrimination and disadvantage. Other public policies, in particular housing and urban policies, are examined and their relationship to anti-discrimination measures is analysed. In explaining differences between the two countries, emphasis is placed on the role of government in urban society, the political economies of urban areas, and the social and political differences between minority groups. Finally, the study identifies the limits to effective civil rights law enforcement and provides some indication as to the policy alternatives open to decision-makers in the two countries.

Book Housing Improvement and Social Inequality

Download or read book Housing Improvement and Social Inequality written by Paul N. Balchin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-07-11 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1979, this book discusses housing improvement, and particularly its effects upon the residential population of the inner areas of West London. The economic and social rationale is explained, and the role of landlords, developers and local authorities is analysed. The book concentrates both on the defects of the improvement process as a whole, and on the application of housing legislation within a specific geographical area. Housing improvement is related to the debate about the inequality of wealth by implicitly questioning who benefits and who loses from improvement policy.

Book Valued Environments

Download or read book Valued Environments written by John R. Gold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-21 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982. People care about places. Inhabitants demand more participation in the changes proposed for their local environments, activists urge greater protection of countryside and natural environments, decision-makers feel threatened by the antagonism aroused by their powers and plans. The essays in this book have been drawn together to discover what lies behind these expressions of concern and discontent. Valued environments are places for which people feel commitment and affection, places which support a sense of personal identity and well-being. The authors explore the character and constituents of valued environments asking how our experiences of environments may be enhanced. What is the impact of environmental change? How can the future be accommodated in both rural and urban environments without destroying their essential qualities? The reader will find substantive evidence from case studies of environments valued by inhabitants and outsiders which answer these questions. Examples are taken from wilderness areas, fenland, market towns and large cities, commercial streets and residential neighbourhoods, environments of the past and those imagined in science fiction. The essays are united in their focus on the meaning of places and landscapes. The subtle but highly significant role of valued environments is examined thoroughly in the book. It will be of interest to all who care deeply about their surroundings, reflecting perhaps some of their own experiences as well as conveying information about the environmental experiences of others. Students of geography, environmental planning and conservation should also find the book directly relevant to their interests in man-environment relationships.
