Book excerpt: This work provides an introduction to the foundations of three-dimensional c- puter vision and describes recent contributions to the ?eld, which are of methodical and application-speci?c nature. Each chapter of this work provides an extensive overview of the corresponding state of the art, into which a detailed description of new methods or evaluation results in application-speci?c systems is embedded. Geometric approaches to three-dimensional scene reconstruction (cf. Chapter 1) are primarily based on the concept of bundle adjustment, which has been developed more than 100 years ago in the domain of photogrammetry. The three-dimensional scene structure and the intrinsic and extrinsic camera parameters are determined such that the Euclidean backprojection error in the image plane is minimised, u- ally relying on a nonlinear optimisation procedure. In the ?eld of computer vision, an alternative framework based on projective geometry has emerged during the last two decades, which allows to use linear algebra techniques for three-dimensional scene reconstructionand camera calibration purposes. With special emphasis on the problems of stereo image analysis and camera calibration, these fairly different - proaches are related to each other in the presented work, and their advantages and drawbacks are stated. In this context, various state-of-the-artcamera calibration and self-calibration methods as well as recent contributions towards automated camera calibration systems are described. An overview of classical and new feature-based, correlation-based, dense, and spatio-temporal methods for establishing point c- respondences between pairs of stereo images is given.

Second, the English versions of volume I and II had omitted several, even extended parts of the original, while we now present a complete revised translation into modern English. The volumes, first published between 1902 and 1908, are lecture notes of courses that Klein offered to future mathematics teachers, realizing a new form of teacher training that remained valid and effective until today: Klein leads the students to gain a more comprehensive and methodological point of view on school mathematics. The volumes enable us to understand Klein’s far-reaching conception of elementarisation, of the “elementary from a higher standpoint”, in its implementation for school mathematics./div This volume II presents a paradigmatic realisation of Klein’s approach of elementarisation for teacher education. It is shown how the various geometries, elaborated particularly since the beginning of the 19th century, are revealed as becoming unified in a new restructured geometry. As Klein liked to stress: “Projective geometry is all geometry”. Non-Euclidean geometry proves to constitute a part of this unifying process. The teaching of geometry is discussed in a separate chapter, which provides moreover important information on the history of geometry teaching and an international comparison.

He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1898 and appointed the Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry in the University of Cambridge in 1914. First published between 1922 and 1925, the six-volume Principles of Geometry was a synthesis of Baker's lecture series on geometry and was the first British work on geometry to use axiomatic methods without the use of co-ordinates. The first four volumes describe the projective geometry of space of between two and five dimensions, with the last two volumes reflecting Baker's later research interests in the birational theory of surfaces. The work as a whole provides a detailed insight into the geometry which was developing at the time of publication. This, the second volume, describes the principal configurations of space of two dimensions.

Book excerpt: The composition of the most remote objects brought into view by the Hubble telescope can no longer be reconciled with the nucleogenesis of standard cosmology and the alternative explanation, in terms of the Λ-Cold-Dark-Matter model, has no recognizable chemical basis. A more rational scheme, based on the chemistry and periodicity of atomic matter, opens up an exciting new interpretation of the cosmos in terms of projective geometry and general relativity. The response of atomic structure to environmental pressure predicts non-Doppler cosmical redshifts and equilibrium nucleogenesis by α­-particle addition, in accord with observed periodic variation of nuclear abundance. Inferred cosmic self similarity elucidates the Bode –Titius law, general commensurability in the solar system and the occurrence of quantum phenomena on a cosmic scale. The generalized periodic function involves both matter and anti-matter in an involuted mapping to a closed projective plane. This topology ensures the same symmetrical balance in a chiral universe, wrapped around an achiral vacuum interface, without singularities. A new cosmology emerges, based on the theory of projective relativ­ity, presented here as a translation of Veblen’s original German text. Not only does it provide a unification of gravity, electromagnetism and quantum theory, through gauge invariance, but also supports the solution of the gravitational field equations, obtained by Gödel for a rotating universe. The appearance of an Einstein–Rosen bridge as outlet from a black hole, into conjugate anti-space, accounts for globular clusters, quasars, cosmic radiation, γ-ray bursters, pulsars, radio sources and other re­gions of plasma activity. The effects of a multiply-connected space-time manifold on observa­tions in an Euclidean tangent space are unpredictable and a complete re-assessment of the size and structure of the universe is indicated. The target readership includes scientists, as well as non-scientists – everybody with a scientific or philosophical interest in cosmology and, especially those cosmologists and mathematicians with the ability to recast the crude ideas presented here into appropriate mathematical models.
