Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of May 1, 1940 Freezing temperatures during the winter and early Spring months caused wide spread damage to peaches in some of the Central States, notably Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, and Tennessee, and in most of the early Southern peach States. The peach crop is expected to be a near failure in many parts of the Central tates, where damage was most severe, and production in the South is expected to be about a fourth below average. Supplies of oranges and grapefruit available for marketing during the late Spring and early summer months will be considerably smaller than last year, due to extensive freeze damage to these crcps in Florida. Prospects for these fruits during the 1940-41 season are relatively favorable in California and Florida but less favorable in Texas, where the condition of groves is considerably below average due to unseasonably cool spring weather and lack of sufficient rain fall, and in Alabama and Mississippi where the satsuma orange trees were severely damaged by freezes. The large stocks this year follow last year's above average April 1 stocks of bushels. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of November 1, 1940 Many fields of late corn, that had been threatened by early frost. Matured with the warm weather and yields are now expected to average bushels per acre, the third highest in 17 years. Estimates of corn production have been raised to bushels an increase of more than 80 million bushels over indications a month ago. The 4 percent improvement in tobacco prospects brings the estimated yield up to the record high yield of 918 pounds per acre secured last year, and raises the estimate of production to pounds, a nearly average crop, On the basis of conditions on hbvember 1, prior to the completion of the fall checkup of a reages harvested, the production estimates for sugar beets and pecans have been increased 5 percent, peanuts 2 percent, and cotton, beans, rice, and potatoes each 1 percent. Expectations of the quantity of sugarcane that will be harvested for sugar have been reduced 11 percent and the estimates for sweet Potatoes; grain sorghum and soybeans 3 to 4 percent. The national crop situation is developing about as expected but there can now be much greater assurance that the excellent cr0ps that have been indicated will actually be secured. Although neither the acreage of crops grown nor the yields secured per acre will equal the wonderful showing made in 1937, cr0p production now seems likely to be larger than in any other season and probably 6 to 7 percent above the predrought average. But the improvement over outturns in exceptionally good crop years such as 1920, 1928, 19319 and 1938 may be only about 1 or 2 percent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of January 1, 1940 Rainfall was deficient during December in nearly all important citrus produc ing areas. In Florida, lack of sufficient moisture until late in December retarded sizing, and caused increased dropping in some groves. In Texas, rainfall was light during December. Shipments to date have included a larger percentage of small sizes than last year. Most trees are still holding fruit well, and very little dropping has been reported. In California, weather was unseasonably dry during December. However, rainfall occurred over northern and central California during the first few days of January. Rains are needed in southern California, but because of the heavy rains of last September groves in this section have not suffered materially to date. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of May 1, 1941 Winter wheat has been favored and conditions on May 1 indicated a crop of about 653 million bushels. This would be fewer bushels than were harvested in 1937 and 1938 but more than were harvested in 25 of the last 30 years. The acreage abandoned is expected to be less than in any year since 1931 and the yield per seeded acre the highest since that year. Rye prospects on May 1 were fairly promising in all States suggesting a good, but not exceptional. Yield on an acreage slightly above average. And a total crop about 12 percent above that harvested last year. Oats look promising through out the South. This book was released on 2018-09-09 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Crop Report as of May 1, 1942 Pastures and ranges have a good start in most States and on May 1 were reported in better condition than on May 1 in any of the past ten years except last year. With numbers of producing livestock and poultry above or approaching previous peaks, and large reserves of grain and hay on hand, the production of livestock and livestock products seems likely to continue outstandingly heavy for some time. During April milk production was 4 percent above production in April last year and with 14 per cent more hens egg production was up about 17 percent. Forecasts for individual creps can be only approximations this early in the season but no signs of shortage have appeared and fairly heavy production of most groups of creps still seems the most probable outcome.
