Book The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales

Download or read book The Ethics and Conduct of Lawyers in England and Wales written by Andrew Boon and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth edition of this respected textbook examines the regulation and conduct of lawyers in England and Wales and addresses new developments in the field, including those in international practice, sexual misconduct, and the environment. Focusing on the practice of, and interrelationship between, solicitors and barristers, the book provides background to current arrangements while exploring contemporary rules of conduct, systems of regulation, and controversies. The four main parts cover client duties, wider obligations, key contexts, and regulation. Parts one to three provide an academic introduction to the subject of lawyers' ethics. They are suitable as a core text for a semester course at undergraduate level, providing grounding for vocational training, such as the Solicitors' Qualifying Examination. Comparisons are made with conduct rules applying in other leading common law jurisdictions where relevant. These parts also explore links between the subject of ethics and the development of lawyers' practical skills. Part four applies the general principles to three elements of regulation: practice, admission, and discipline. The approach throughout is socio-legal. While the essential law is described, relevant social science research informs consideration of issues and debates.

Book The Official History of Criminal Justice in England and Wales

Download or read book The Official History of Criminal Justice in England and Wales written by Paul Rock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume II of The Official History of Criminal Justice in England and Wales traces, for the first time, the genesis and early evolution of two principal institutions in the criminal justice system, the Crown Court and the Crown Prosecution Service. This volume examines the origins and shaping of two critical institutions: the Crown Court, which rose from the ashes of the Courts of Assize and Quarter Sessions; and the Crown Prosecution Service which replaced a rather haphazard system of police prosecuting solicitors. The 1971 Courts Act and the 1985 Prosecution of Offences Act were to reconfigure the architecture of criminal justice, transforming the procedures by which people were charged, prosecuted and, in the weightier cases demanding a judge and jury, tried in the criminal courts of England and Wales. One stemmed from a crisis in a medieval system of travelling justices that tried people in the wrong places and for inadequate lengths of time. The other was precipitated by a scandal in which three men were wrongly convicted for the murder of a bisexual prostitute. Theirs is an as yet untold history that can be explored in depth because it is recent enough, in the words of Harold Wilson, to have been ‘written while the official records could still be supplemented by reference to the personal recollections of the public men who were involved’. This book will be of much interest to students of criminology and British history, politics and law.

Book The Role of the Cyprus Attorney General s Office in Prosecutions Rhetoric Ideology and Practice

Download or read book The Role of the Cyprus Attorney General s Office in Prosecutions Rhetoric Ideology and Practice written by Despina Kyprianou and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-10-06 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attorney General, Republic of Cyprus It is with great pleasure that I foreword the book of Dr Despina Kyprianou’s for many reasons: The ?rst one is that books on any area of Cyprus Law is particularly welcomed as there are limited studies which focus on this ?eld and reveal the singularities and special features of Cyprus Law. The second one is that this book is about the Attorney General’s Of?ce, an of?ce that I have served for almost thir- ?ve years and have personal knowledge of its crucial role not only regarding prosecutions but also regarding a wide variety of other legal issues. The third and most important reason is that this is an excellent work and a thought-provoking contribution to our understanding of the Role of the Cyprus Attorney General’s Of?ce in Prosecutions. The last reason that I am very happy to commend this study is the fact that, a few years ago, I was the one that granted access to the Law Of?ce for Dr Kyprianou’s research. The publication of this highly informative book is the best con?rmation that I was right in doing so. The Republic of Cyprus was established as an independent sovereign republic with a presidential regime on 16 August 1960, when its Constitution came into force and British sovereignty over Cyprus as a Crown Colony ceased.
