Book Transforming Empire in Japan and East Asia

Download or read book Transforming Empire in Japan and East Asia written by Robert Eskildsen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-01-02 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the history of a military expedition the Japanese government sent to southern Taiwan in 1874, in the context of Japan’s subordination to Western powers in the unequal treaty system in East Asia. It argues that events on the ground in Taiwan show the Japanese government intended to establish colonies in southern and eastern Taiwan, and justified its colonial intent based on the argument that a state must spread civilization and political authority to territories where it claimed sovereignty, thereby challenging Chinese authority in East Asia and consolidating its power domestically. The book considers the history of the Taiwan Expedition in the light of how Japanese imperialism began: it emerged as part of the process of consolidating government power after the Meiji Restoration, it derived from Western imperialism, it developed in a dynamic relationship with Western imperialism and it increased Japan’s leverage in its competition for influence in East Asia.

Book The Japanese Expedition to Formosa Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Japanese Expedition to Formosa Classic Reprint written by Edward Howard House and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Japanese Expedition to Formosa Ir will be obvious that the following pages make no pretence to the ality of a historical record. They are chiefly collected from memoranda of personal observation of the incidents described, and of authentic narratives of the diplomatic transactions between the governments of Japan and China. Their necessarily hasty preparation makes them incomplete in many particulars, and there are, indeed, reasons why a full and unabridged report of the events connected with Formosa might be inexpedient at this moment; but, within the limits prescribed for them, they are believed to represent the leading features of the subject with accuracy, and to be sup ported by sutficient evidence upon all points concerning which discussion may hereafter arise. Download or read book Confrontation Over Taiwan written by Leonard H. D. Gordon and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2009 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confrontation over Taiwan: Nineteenth Century China and the Powers is a full and detailed account of international relations of Taiwan during the nineteenth century and specifically, the period between 1840 and 1895. During this time the western powers and Japan were engaged in imperialist designs seeking commercial and strategic gain in the South China Sea, which ultimately led to the Japanese colonization of Taiwan. Leonard Gordon, a diplomatic historian of East Asia, closely examines the foreign policies of China, Great Britain, the United States, France, and Japan. Also taking account of historic events on Taiwan and the mainland, Gordon has researched, in addition to the extensive published national records, unpublished archival materials in Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and Great Britain. Providing a context for understanding the current situation in Taiwan, the thorough research and historical analysis of Confrontation over Taiwan make this an essential book for students of East Asian History and International Affairs.
