Excerpt: ... lived several years with his uncle, Elias P. Fitch of Plaiufield. In 1814 he was drafted into the army of the "war of 1812," and served six months at Sackett's. Harbor. Between 1817-20, he moved to DeKalb, married Lora Dewey of the same town March 11, 1824, and settled on a farm. He was unfortunate in business and April 15, 1827, buried his wife; she leaving one child, Elias, who died in 1830, age 5. He married again, Divine G. Eager* of Gouverneur, September 15, 1829, and settled again in his adopted town. In 1834, he moved to Gouverneur and worked a farm eleven years, when being unfortunate and health failing, he returned to DeKalb. After suffering many years from heart disease, he suddenly dropped dead in the woods April 16, 1855, age 59, and was buried in East DeKalb. He left a wife and three children. Fitch Tanner had sandy hair, blue eyes and light complexion, was of medium height and well built, was fond of reading, of quiet and industrious habits, of upright principles and christian character and professions. He left his children no worldly goods, but bequeathed to them a good name and a pleasant. memory. His: children were: *Divine was daughter of James and Anne Eager of Warwick, Massachusetts. She was the third child of seven brothers and sisters, was born October 21,1796, " brot up" with her aunt, Divine Conant, in Winchester, New Hampshire, and learned " the man-tailors1 trade" which she followed many years. About 1834, she moved " over the mountains" to Gouverneur, New York, married in 1829, became a widow in 1855 and died September 20, 1888, age 92, and was buried in East DeKalb. She had black eyes and hair, a warm temperament and great energy, was a faithful wife, a loving mother, and for many years a professing christian....
