Book excerpt: During the golden age of the 1920s, historical innovations and accomplishments were constantly being made in art, music, and sports. Enter Gene Oberst. Born at the beginning of the twentieth century with a disability, it took a haphazard event involving a stray javelin to make the entire world, and Oberst himself, realize he was more than a bookworm-he was a natural-born athlete. As he grew up in a Twain-like town on the Ohio River, the ideals of his self-sufficient family and their dedication to educate themselves fed Gene's persistent and diligent nature, permeating every area of his life. That determination led him to play college football for a national championship Notre Dame team under legendary coach Knute Rockne. He went on to the highest achievement for athletes-the Olympics. Including information taken directly from Gene's personal journals, this biography offers a firsthand, behind-the-scenes look at one of the most persistent and innovative athletes of the 1900s. Covering the journeys Gene's ancestors took during their emigration to America from Germany, to Gene's time journeying to the Paris Olympics, follow the story of the miraculous and obstacle-defying life of American Olympian Gene Oberst.

But will those Nobel bastards honor them, too? Only God, our merciless and just God, knows." -Dave Eggers "The funniest publication in the United States." -The New Yorker "This publication is tasteless and destructive to our shared values. Read it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. Seriously, what else could make me laugh-much less laugh uproariously-while being offended week after week after week?" -Al Gore "The Onion is the funniest thing in news since Dan Rather's spooky stare." -Matt Groening "Brutal satire that rushes into the far reaches of race, class, sexuality, and culture where many publications-and critics-fear to tread." -Chicago Tribune "The Onion, unlike any other entity in our media culture, offers a refreshingly honest look at our complicated life." -Ken Burns

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostic Molecular Pathology: A Guide to Applied Molecular Testing, Second Edition assembles a group of experts to discuss the molecular basis and mechanisms of major human diseases and disease processes and how the molecular features of disease can be harnessed to develop practical molecular tests for disease detection, diagnosis and prognosis. The book explains how molecular tests are utilized in the treatment of patients in personalized medicine, highlights new technologies and approaches of applied molecular pathology, and discusses how this discovery-based research yields new and useful biomarkers and tests. As it is essential to stay up-to-date on new molecular diagnostics in this changing field, this book covers critically important areas in the practice of personalized medicine and reflects our understanding of the pathology, pathogenesis and pathophysiology of human disease. Includes new material on mass spectrometry for infectious diseases, microbiome, homology-directed repair for PARPi, whole genome sequencing for constitutional testing, and much more Provides insights on the value of the molecular test in comparison to traditional methods, which include speed, precision, sensitivity and clinical impacts for the patient Focuses on the menu of molecular diagnostic tests available in modern molecular pathology or clinical laboratories that can be applied to disease detection, diagnosis and classification in the clinical workup of a patient Explains how molecular tests are utilized to guide the treatment of patients in personalized medicine (guided therapies) and for the prognostication of disease

Book Human Tumor Derived p53 Mutants A Growing Family of Oncoproteins

Download or read book Human Tumor Derived p53 Mutants A Growing Family of Oncoproteins written by Ygal Haupt and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2016-08-10 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TP53 gene mutations are present in more than half of all human cancers. The resulting proteins are mostly full-length with a single amino acid change and are abundantly expressed in cancer cells. Some of the mutant p53 proteins gain oncogenic functions (GOF) through which it actively contribute to the aberrant cell proliferation, increased resistance to apoptotic stimuli and ability to metastasize. Gain of function mutant p53 proteins can transcriptionally regulate the expression of a large plethora of target genes. This mainly occurs through the formation of oncogenic transcriptional competent complexes that include mutant p53 protein, known transcription factors, posttranslational modifiers and scaffold proteins. Mutant p53 protein can also transcriptionally regulate the expression of microRNAs, small non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the posttranscriptional level. Each microRNA can putatively target the expression of hundred mRNAs and consequently impact on many cellular functions. Thus, gain of function mutant p53 proteins can exert their oncogenic activities through the modulation of both non-coding and coding regions of human genome. Over the past 3 decades, the regulation of p53 has been extensively studied. However, the regulation of mutant p53 remained largely unexplored. This snapshot focuses on recent discovery of mutant p53 GOF and regulation.
