Matskevich shows how the dominant 'Subject' – the androcentric ha'adam and the ethnocentric Israel – is perceived in relation to and over against the 'Other', represented respectively as female and foreign. Using the tools of narratology, semiotics and psychoanalysis, Matskevich highlights the contradiction inherent in the project of dominance, through which the Subject seeks to suppress the transforming power of difference it relies on for its signification. Thus, in Genesis 2-3 ha'adam can only emerge as a complex Subject in possession of knowledge with the help of woman, the transforming Other to whom the narrator (and Yahweh) attributes both the agency and the blame. Similarly, the narratives of Genesis 12–36 show a conflicted attitude to places of alterity: Egypt, the fertile and seductive space that threatens annihilation, and Haran, the 'mother's land', a complex metaphor for the feminine. The construction of identity in these narratives largely relies on the symbolic fecundity of the Other.

He sees it as an appeal to the Bible to preserve male privilege, similar to the appeals to the Bible to validate slavery and Apartheid; appeals to the Bible made by some of the best Reformed and evangelical biblical scholars, and now seen to be special pleading. Carefully studying the limited number of texts on which complementarians predicate their theology of the sexes, Giles finds not one of them actually teaches what complementarians claim. Furthermore, complementarians too often ignore the texts that are very difficult for them. In this book the ordination of women gets only passing mention. The constant focus is on whether or not the Bible subordinates women to men as an abiding theological principle.

Whether through subversive performative identity or by surgical sex change, the divinely made human person is now threatened with abolition and replacement by the self-made man and the man-made woman. In Metaphysics and Gender, Michele M. Schumacher offers a corrective to this distorted and distorting outlook, calling for the recovery of an anthropological vision rooted in recognition of the normative divine “art” of nature and of the likeness—and far greater unlikeness—between divine and human causality. Surveying contemporary transgender trends, Schumacher identifies and excavates their conceptual and ideological foundations in the gender theory of Judith Butler, the existentialist feminism of Simone de Beauvoir, and the atheistic existentialism of Jean-Paul Sartre. Book excerpt: In this dissertation, I develop a conception of gender that (1) holds that men and women share a common humanity that is grounded in their mutual creation in the image of God and results in the expression of common human properties and common human capacities in ways that are fitting to their masculinity or femininity, respectively, and (2) maintains the distinction between men and women as two unique types of humanity that is grounded in the created differences of gendered embodiment. This project aims to present and defend this conception of gender as consistent with Scripture, internally coherent, defensible against external critique, and valuable for contemporary discourse on gender. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to this study. In chapter 2, I develop a framework for evaluating conceptions of gender based on Scripture’s teaching. In chapter 3, I define, evaluate, and critique gender essentialism, the view concerned with determining what fixed or innate qualities are intrinsic to being male or female. I ultimately conclude that gender essentialism does not satisfy the biblical criteria developed in chapter 2. In chapter 4, I survey and evaluate the social construction of gender, the view that affirms that gender is derived from societal forces and is not dependent on biological sex. I ultimately conclude that the social construction of gender also fails to satisfy the biblical criteria developed. In chapter 5, I construct a biblical conception of gender based on the view that there are no particular capacities or properties, outside of physiological differences, that belong exclusively to men or that belong exclusively to women. Instead, as I argue, men and women uniquely express common human traits as men and as women. According to this conception of gender, the common humanity of men and women serves as the foundation of the ontological equality of men and women. Hence, in this chapter, I offer an ontological definition of men and women. In chapter 6, I consider gender in the context of human embodiment to show how the emphasis on the common humanity of men and women is compatible with Scripture’s teaching on men and women as two distinct types of humanity. Chapter 7 concludes this study.
