Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women owners of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have a great potential to contribute to economic growth and poverty reduction through employment creation and income generation. In Bangladesh, women-owned SMEs have different characteristics when compared with men-owned SMEs and tend to face specific challenges and obstacles. To capitalize on this potential, these challenges and constraints have to be addressed in initiatives that aim to support SME growth. The Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise Development Project supported the development and expansion of SMEs in Bangladesh from 2009 to 2013. In specific pilot districts, the number of women-owned SMEs increased by over 10%. The training of women SME owners in business development, accounting, loan application rules and processes, and in the regulations governing businesses facilitated their improved access to institutional finance. The formation of advocacy groups and membership in different associations enhanced the confidence of women SME owners and their ability to lobby for policy changes. Dialogue and relation building between participating financial institutions and women's SME associations helped foster mutual understanding and cooperation, leading to better outcomes for women-owned SMEs. Participating financial institution policies and products require further adaptation to meet the needs and circumstances of women-owned SMEs.

Book Bangladesh Gender Equality Diagnostic of Selected Sectors

Download or read book Bangladesh Gender Equality Diagnostic of Selected Sectors written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades, Bangladesh has made progress in women's participation in the labor force, gender parity in primary education, and women's political representation. Areas of concern include the high prevalence of violence against women, obstacles to women's access to resources and assets, unequal terms of their labor engagement, and impact of their overwhelming responsibility for care work. The Government of Bangladesh has made policy commitments toward gender equality and established an institutional framework to fulfill these. This publication intends to support the government in its attempt to address persisting gender inequalities and gaps through a multisector approach across policies, programs, and projects. It provides insights into gender issues in urban; transport; energy; and skills, vocational, and tertiary education, and gives suggestions for strengthening gender mainstreaming in projects.

Book Gender Inequality Socioeconomic Analysis And Developing Country Case Studies

Download or read book Gender Inequality Socioeconomic Analysis And Developing Country Case Studies written by Tisdell Clement A and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2019-05-03 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book provides an easily comprehended overview of facts about gender inequality and contains a valuable introduction to economic theories of this inequality, the applicability of which is assessed in the light of empirical evidence. A special feature of this book is its adoption of a multidisciplinary approach to the study of gender inequality. Both economic and sociological influences on gender inequality are taken into account in an innovative fashion. The scholarly coverage of this book is broad and focuses mainly on female disadvantage; both that suffered by female children and by women. Subjects covered include economic theories of gender inequality and critiques of these; sex selection, preferences for boys and the value of females; measures of gender inequality and their application; the occurrence of poverty and its relationship with the deprivation of women and children; implications for the status of females of their access to different forms of capital (taking into account modern concepts of capital); the need to take into account little explored relationships between gender inequality and the achievement of sustainable development; ecofeminism; and the abuse of women by men. The discussion is reinforced by case studies and examples drawn primarily from South Asian and Northeast Asian countries. Some attention is given in the case studies to the diverse practices of 'tribal' people and minorities. This is done in order to better assess existing theories about gender inequality. The value of adopting a multidisciplinary approach to the study of gender inequality is well demonstrated. Consequently, this book provides a more holistic and balanced view of gender inequality than other available books.

Book Advancing Gender Equality

Download or read book Advancing Gender Equality written by Commonwealth Secretariat and published by Commonwealth Secretariat. This book was released on 2016-08-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Commonwealth Secretariat has been a pioneer in promoting women’s rights and gender equality since the 1976–85 UN Decade for Women, and of gender mainstreaming since the UN 4th World Conference on Women, to which our 1995 Plan of Action on Gender and Development was a Commonwealth contribution. This publication brings together case studies prepared in connection with the end-of-term review of the 2005–15 Commonwealth Plan of Action for Gender Equality. The case studies are based on submissions and interviews with government representatives, gender specialists and other stakeholders, including civil society organisations, from 20 countries representing all regions of the Commonwealth. The examples were selected to demonstrate a range of strategies that can be employed to advance gender equality and women’s empowerment. Together they help to show what perpetuates gender inequality and offer approaches that can be adopted to help end unjust discrimination.

Book Examining the gender digital divide A case study from rural Bangladesh

Download or read book Examining the gender digital divide A case study from rural Bangladesh written by Sufian, Farha D. and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-10-12 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women farmers in Bangladesh face several challenges when it comes to accessing technology and information, and this limits their ability to improve their agricultural productivity and enhance their livelihoods. The gendered digital divide is a significant contributor to inequities in agriculture and has important implications for women’s empowerment. Lack of access to information affects their ability to make informed decisions, access markets, and secure their rights. This policy note summarizes research designed to identify the barriers female farmers in Bangladesh face in accessing technology and information so that future policies and initiatives can address these challenges and, in so doing, promote gender equality and the empowerment of rural women.

Book Changing Norms about Gender Inequality in Education Evidence from Bangladesh

Download or read book Changing Norms about Gender Inequality in Education Evidence from Bangladesh written by Maitreyi Bordia Das and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2007 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Using a recent household survey for two cohorts of married women, this paper examines norms about gender equality in education for children and adults. Among the main findings are that gender education gap norms have changed: younger generations of women are more positive about female vs. male education, both as pertaining to child and adult education outcomes. Perhaps the strongest result is that Bangladeshi women are more likely to espouse attitudes of gender equality in education for their children and less so about gender equality among spouses. It is also easier to explain norms regarding children's education and more difficult to explain norms about equality in marriages. The authors believe that question on relative education of boys and girls captures the value of education per se, while the question on educational equality in marriage captures the norms regarding marriage and the relative worth of husbands and wives. The effect of education in determining norms is significant though complex, and spans own and spousal education, as well as that of older females in the household. This indicates sharing of education norms effects or externalities arising from spousal education in the production of gender education gap norms within marriage as well as arising from the presence of older educated females in the household. Lastly, the authors also find associations between gender education gap norms and household poverty, information processing and religion, though the evidence here is more mixed.

Book Gender Inequality in the Global Labor Market

Download or read book Gender Inequality in the Global Labor Market written by Shafiqul Islam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: True enough that women's participation in the labor market has been accelerated conspicuously during the last few decades around the world. But do these feminizations of employment envisage the equal access and rights in the global labor market in terms of gender equality? The basic attempt of this book was to seek the answers of these queries. With an application of interdisciplinary theoretical perspectives, the book was written based on empirical findings from a field study conducted on Bangladeshi female immigrants in London, UK. It discusses the ways and to what extent Bangladeshi female immigrants' roles are sources of entitlement to the provision of UK's labor market, their status on the labor market, their limits, possibilities and ability to negotiate changes in these roles in terms of gender relations. Findings reveal that the increasing rate of feminization of employment is not coinciding with the elimination of gender disparities. Empirical evidence further fails to support the argument of neoliberal economic development, global capitalism and free market economy that women's occupational outcomes result primarily from free choices that they make in an open market.
