This trend has inevitably resulted in a body of literature that more often articulates the male therapist's experience and subsequent theories about what transpires in the client-therapist relationship. With regards to erotic transference and countertransference, it has only been within the last two decades that the female therapist's experience with the male patient has been illuminated as a unique and somewhat varied experience from that of the male therapist with the female patient. For example, power is perceived, obtained, and utilized differently when the female therapist is placed in a position of authority over the male client (Gornick, 1986).This dissertation will examine the general themes, both historical and contemporary, regarding erotic transference and countertransference, as well as the unique dynamics present in the female therapist-male client dyad when sexual or romantic feelings occur. Specifically, these themes will be illustrated through a case study involving eighteen sessions of psychotherapy conducted with a male client with demographics, stage-of-life, and philosophical reservations about love similar to that of the female therapist. These similarities between client and therapist likely contributed to the development of the transference, countertransference, and eventual working through and personal growth that occurred for both client and therapist during the course of treatment. It is proposed that certain healing experiences that transpired for the client might not have been achieved in the absence of the erotic transference and countertransference dynamics.
