Book Women in African Refugee Camps Gender Based Violence against Female Refugees The case of Mai Ayni Refugee Camp Northern Ethiopia

Download or read book Women in African Refugee Camps Gender Based Violence against Female Refugees The case of Mai Ayni Refugee Camp Northern Ethiopia written by Yonas Gebreiyosus and published by Anchor Academic Publishing (aap_verlag). This book was released on 2014-02-01 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study has found that female refugees in refugee camps are exposed to sexual violence, physical violence and socio-economic violence including attempted rape, rape, gang rape, physical injuries, discrimination and stigmatization and denial of access to services. The book also discloses that male refugees and intimate partners of female refugees are the prime gender based violence perpetrators of female refugees in Mai Ayni refugee camp. Moreover, the study reveales that idleness, economic dependency, physical insecurity, lack of awareness, collapse of social and family structure as well as poor reporting, coordination and legal enforcement mechanisms are identified as causes/risk factors for gender based violence against female refugees in refugee camps. Moreover, mens’ feelings of ‘loss of power’ in the camp, which challenge male identity as superior to female, lead male refugees to anger and make female refugees vulnerable to different forms of gender based violence. Consequently, because of gender based violence, female refugees in refugee camps have to fear short and long lasting damaging consequences on their lives in terms of health, both physical and psycho-social.

Similarly, gender-based violence is viewed as a significant problem in refugee camps throughout the world. However, in Ethiopia studies on gender based violence against female refugees are limited. Most researches in this area were conducted in line with other problems of refugees. Yet, in order to assess comprehensively it needs specific study. Thus, the main objective of the study was to examine the prevalence, cause and consequences of gender based violence against female refugees in Mai Ayni refugee camp. In order to achieve these objectives, qualitative methods of data collection have been employed. Hence, data were collected from in-depth interview with eighteen female refugees and five male refugees, focus group discussion with male and female refugees, key informant interviews with concerned bodies as well as document analysis and personal observation were used. The study has found that female refugees in the camp were exposed to sexual violence, physical violence and socio-economic violence including; attempt rape, rape, gang rape, physical injuries, discrimination and stigmatization, and denial of access to services. Book Pastoral and Spiritual Care Across Religions and Cultures II

Download or read book Pastoral and Spiritual Care Across Religions and Cultures II written by Isabelle Noth and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diverse compilation of contributions explores the pressing topic of how to provide appropriate spiritual care in the context of human migration. The psycho-spiritual dimensions of suffering particular to human migration, such as social exclusion, alienation, and various types of trauma, are considered from various disciplinary perspectives. Complex but important questions are explored: How might various methods of self-healing be better supported by spiritual caregivers? How can faith communities cultivate more supportive contexts, responsive to the particular needs prompted by migration? The International Association for Spiritual Care IASC, founded in 2015 in Bern, Switzerland, is dedicated to the promotion of richer interdisciplinary dialogue amongst people from different cultural and religious backgrounds. The volume starts from the premise that failures to cultivate deeper respect for diversity risks cultural misunderstandings and relational harm in the context of helping relationships, and therefore, personal encounters and scholarly exchanges between Muslims, Jews, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Sikhs, people without religious affiliation, and atheists are critically important and unquestionably valuable. These contributions reflect the fruits of the inaugural conference of the IASC, which was held at the University of Bern and in the House of Religions in June, 2016.

Book Pornography and Genocide

Download or read book Pornography and Genocide written by Thomas Trzyna and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2019-06-14 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One out of every thirty five women born is killed for cultural or sexual reasons. In the twentieth century more women were killed for those reasons than all the people who died in wars. Women everywhere live in the higher stages of Gregory Stanton’s eight stage genocide scale. Pornography contributes to the peril, whether in the form of battlefield rape films, the rape chants of frat boys, or the massive distribution of violent images on the web and through other media. The United Nations definition of genocide must be changed to recognize women as a targeted group. Pornography and Genocide pulls together the evidence from legal scholars and a myriad of contemporary studies and news accounts from around the world. It is time to face the war against women.

Book Prevalence and Correlates of Gender Based Violence Among Conflict Affected Women

Download or read book Prevalence and Correlates of Gender Based Violence Among Conflict Affected Women written by Etobssie Wako and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: War disproportionately affects women and children, and gender based violence (GBV) has become an increasingly common means of fighting wars and targeting civilians. Such is the case in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), particularly in the eastern provinces, where among the multitude of human rights violations, sexual violence and abuses against women and girls are committed on a large scale. Documented efforts addressing GBV in refugee communities have mainly focused on medical, programmatic, and legal responses; few studies explore the prevalence of GBV among conflict-affected populations. Objective: To determine the prevalence and correlates of outsider violence during and after conflict, and lifetime and past year intimate partner violence (IPV). To determine differences in the proportions of violence victimizations, including the differences in the proportions of outsider violence during and after conflict, and the differences in the proportions of lifetime and past year IPV. To describe patterns of reporting and health care seeking related to violence victimization. Methods: Cross sectional data were obtained from a sample of 810 women of reproductive age (WRA) living in two Rwandese refugee camps. GBV was defined as physical violence, sexual violence, or controlling behavior that is committed by intimate partners (IPV) or persons outside the family (outsider violence). Univariate analysis was used to describe the study population as a whole. The chi-square test for independence was used to measure significant differences between women who had identified experiencing GBV and those who did not. A z-test was conducted to explore differences in the proportions of outsider violence during and after conflict, and lifetime and past year IPV. Bivariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were conducted to assess the unadjusted and adjusted associations between GBV and select variables of interest during and after conflict. Statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS version 14.0 Results: 434 WRA experienced GBV; of which 399 reported experiencing outsider violence before and after conflict, and 130 reported experiencing IPV. The logistical model indicated that there was a consistently significant association between a period of one to five years spent in a refugee camp and outsider violence during conflict (Adj. OR= 0.16; 95%CI:0.10-0.27; P

Book Sexual and Gender Based Violence and the Humanitarian Response The Case of Rohingya Refugee Women in Bangladesh

Download or read book Sexual and Gender Based Violence and the Humanitarian Response The Case of Rohingya Refugee Women in Bangladesh written by Ena Tripura and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) grows acute in the context of displacement and refugee situations. In recent times, SGBV against women has received unprecedented attention in humanitarian discourse, with humanitarian organisations such as United Nations (UN) agencies adopting several legal and policy instruments and interventions to address the issue. Despite this, SGBV against women remains a significant problem in contemporary refugee camps and among the most vulnerable refugee communities. This thesis investigates the roles and responses of UN agencies and their partner non-government organisations (NGOs) in addressing SGBV against refugee women in Cox's Bazar Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh. The study fills a gap in existing research by examining how SGBV against refugee women has been constructed, represented, and addressed in the literature, in the legal instruments, and by the frontline humanitarian actors working in Cox's Bazar camps in Bangladesh. The study involves an analysis of policy documents and semi-structured interviews with the Rohingya refugees and humanitarian actors. Theoretically, the study is informed by post-structural feminist thinking, particularly by Carol Bacchi's “what's the problem represented to be?” approach. This theoretical perspective allows the thesis to critically capture and challenge the ways SGBV is constructed and addressed in policies and practices. -- The thesis finds that there is no uniform interpretation of SGBV in legal instruments. Different legal instruments have identified the issue differently and offer multiple solutions. No single legal instrument addresses the issue adequately, although these legal instruments collectively provide adequate guidelines for humanitarian actors. As SGBV is one of the major policy concerns in the humanitarian field, humanitarian organisations have made multiple GBV interventions to address the issue in Cox's Bazar Rohingya refugee context. However, these interventions are not positively viewed by the Rohingya refugee women as they cannot fully realise the benefits of the interventions. Humanitarian organisations' efforts to address SGBV are significantly compromised by a series of factors: an inadequate understanding of the issue by the frontline humanitarian actors, donor-driven and top-down humanitarian interventions, encampment and mobility restrictions, the bureaucratic complexity of humanitarian response mechanisms, and mistrust between the humanitarian actors and the refugees. Based on the findings, this study suggests that the design of future SGBV interventions must be informed by a context-specific study. Also, SGBV against refugee women should not be seen as an issue that could be addressed through top-down and stand-alone gender-focused interventions, but as one that requires changing the humanitarian response mechanism with the active participation of the refugee women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A free open access ebook is available upon publication. Learn more at www.luminosoa.org. Tens of thousands of Eritreans make perilous voyages across Africa and the Mediterranean Sea every year. Why do they risk their lives to reach European countries where so many more hardships await them? By visiting family homes in Eritrea and living with refugees in camps and urban peripheries across Ethiopia, Sudan, and Italy, Milena Belloni untangles the reasons behind one of the most under-researched refugee populations today. Balancing encounters with refugees and their families, smugglers, and visa officers, The Big Gamble contributes to ongoing debates about blurred boundaries between forced and voluntary migration, the complications of transnational marriages, the social matrix of smuggling, and the role of family expectations, emotions, and values in migrants’ choices of destinations.

Book Decolonizing Social Work

Download or read book Decolonizing Social Work written by Mel Gray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Riding on the success of Indigenous Social Work Around the World, this book provides case studies to further scholarship on decolonization, a major analytical and activist paradigm among many of the world’s Indigenous Peoples, including educators, tribal leaders, activists, scholars, politicians, and citizens at the grassroots level. Decolonization seeks to weaken the effects of colonialism and create opportunities to promote traditional practices in contemporary settings. Establishing language and cultural programs; honouring land claims, teaching Indigenous history, science, and ways of knowing; self-esteem programs, celebrating ceremonies, restoring traditional parenting approaches, tribal rites of passage, traditional foods, and helping and healing using tribal approaches are central to decolonization. These insights are brought to the arena of international social work still dominated by western-based approaches. Decolonization draws attention to the effects of globalization and the universalization of education, methods of practice, and international ’development’ that fail to embrace and recognize local knowledges and methods. In this volume, Indigenous and non-Indigenous social work scholars examine local cultures, beliefs, values, and practices as central to decolonization. Supported by a growing interest in spirituality and ecological awareness in international social work, they interrogate trends, issues, and debates in Indigenous social work theory, practice methods, and education models including a section on Indigenous research approaches. The diversity of perspectives, decolonizing methodologies, and the shared struggle to provide effective professional social work interventions is reflected in the international nature of the subject matter and in the mix of contributors who write from their contexts in different countries and cultures, including Australia, Canada, Cuba, Japan, Jordan, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, and the USA.

Book Human Trafficking in the Sinai

Download or read book Human Trafficking in the Sinai written by Mirjam van Reisen and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the horrific situation of trafficking of refugees in the Sinai desert, a crisis that started in 2009. The refugees include men, women, children, and accompanying infants fleeing from already desperate circumstances in Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Sudan. An estimated 95% of the refugees in the Sinai (also referred to as hostages) are Eritreans. Smuggled across borders by middlemen, or kidnapped from refugee camps in Ethiopia and the Sudan, as well as their surrounding areas, and then captured or sold, the refugees are held hostage close to the Israeli border in inhumane conditions and tortured for ransoms of up to $50,000 USD. A large number of the refugees have died, either while being held hostage or after their release - often even after their ransom has been paid. A large number of refugees simply 'disappear' - killed while being held or shot.

Book Mobile Africa Human Trafficking and the Digital Divide

Download or read book Mobile Africa Human Trafficking and the Digital Divide written by Van Reisen, Mirjam and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2019-10-25 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens at the nexus of the digital divide and human trafficking? This book examines the impact of the introduction of new digital information and communication technology (ICT) – as well as lack of access to digital connectivity – on human trafficking. The different studies presented in the chapters show the realities for people moving along the Central Mediterranean route from the Horn of Africa through Libya to Europe. The authors warn against an over-optimistic view of innovation as a solution and highlight the relationship between technology and the crimes committed against vulnerable people in search of protection. In this volume, the third in a four-part series ‘Connected and Mobile: Migration and Human Trafficking in Africa’, relevant new theories are proposed as tools to understand the dynamics that appear in mobile Africa. Most importantly, the editors identify critical ethical issues in relation to both technology and human trafficking and the nexus between them, helping explore the dimensions of new responsibilities that need to be defined. The chapters in this book represent a collection of well-documented empirical investigations by a young and diverse group of researchers, addressing critical issues in relation to innovation and the perils of our time.
