Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Berlin's Gemäldegalerie is known for its outstanding collection of European paintings from the thirteenth to eighteenth century. Each chapter in this book is dedicated to one painting from the collection. In the breadth of this idiosyncratic selection, painting, as it discovers itself becomes a medium for the formulation of modern subjectivity. Each painting in focus unfolds its own making and its artistic concerns as they reflect contemporary issues, today. What are the paradoxes within which art is made by women? How does the primordial drive to destroy works of art affect today's art discourse? Where did the modern struggle of painting against the picture begin? Why does the Wild Man from early German Renaissance still haunt us? And why doesn't it matter whether Jan Vermeer used an optical device for his paintings? Twelve Paintings highlights the currentness of the Old Masters.

Book excerpt: Lying between deserts, mountain chains and seas, Iran developed a fascinating cultural landscape. 360 objects from the time of the first advanced civilisations during the 3rd millennium BC until the end of the Safavid Empire in the early 18th century illustrate the outstanding significance of Iran as the initiator and centre of intercultural exchange. Exquisite artworks from the Sarikhani Collection in London and the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin invite visitors to embark on a journey in time through the cultural heritage of Iran. The highlights include the great pre-Islamic empires of the Achaemenids and the Sassanids, the establishment of a Persian-Islamic culture, the masterly artistic achievements of the 9th to the 13th centuries and the Golden Age of the Safavids. They are brought together as in a multifaceted kaleidoscope in the copious illustrations and provide insight into the art of the courts and the urban elites.

This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of the Gemaldegalerie's comprehensive collection of European art, including masterpieces from all styles and schools from the 13th-18th centuries, accompanied by the Director's commentary. Founded in 1830, the Gemäldegalerie houses the main body of paintings belonging to the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin. Unlike most European national collections, the Gemäldegalerie's was not formed around that of the Royal family - instead each piece was acquired with the intention of creating a true reflection of European art history. As a result, the Gemäldegalerie holds one of the world's leading collections of European paintings from the 13th to the 18th centuries. Here the viewer can find examples of all schools and styles of European painting from the Late Middle Ages to the conclusion of the Baroque tradition. The German collection is arguably the most comprehensive in the world, and the Early Netherlandish and Italian collections are also exceptional. The collection includes instantly recognisable masterpieces from such artists as Dürer, Holbein, van Eyck, Raphael, Botticelli, Titian, Caravaggio and Vermeer, with especially renowned Rubens and Rembrandt groups.

Book The Fortunes of Apuleius and the Golden Ass

Download or read book The Fortunes of Apuleius and the Golden Ass written by Julia Haig Gaisser and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the transmission and reception of one of the most influential novels in Western literature. The Golden Ass, the only ancient Roman novel to survive in its entirety, tells of a young man changed into an ass by magic and his bawdy adventures and narrow escapes before the goddess Isis changes him back again. Its centerpiece is the famous story of Cupid and Psyche. Julia Gaisser follows Apuleius' racy tale from antiquity through the sixteenth century, tracing its journey from roll to codex in fourth-century Rome, into the medieval library of Monte Cassino, into the hands of Italian humanists, into print, and, finally, over the Alps and into translation in Spanish, French, German, and English. She demonstrates that the novel's reception was linked with Apuleius' reputation as a philosopher and the persona he projected in his works. She relates Apuleius and the Golden Ass to a diverse cast of important literary and historical figures--including Augustine, Fulgentius, Petrarch, Boccaccio, Bessarion, Boiardo, and Beroaldo. Paying equal attention to the novel's transmission (how it survived) and its reception (how it was interpreted), she places the work in its many different historical contexts, examining its representation in art, literary imitation, allegory, scholarly commentary, and translation. The volume contains several appendixes, including an annotated list of the manuscripts of the Golden Ass. This book is based on the author's Martin Classical Lectures at Oberlin College in 2000.

Download or read book Johannes Vermeer written by Stephan Koja and published by . This book was released on 2021-09-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window by Johannes Vermeer is one of the most famous works of seventeenth-century Dutch art. Preserved at the Gemaldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden, the painting has been restored, in an elaborate process lasting from 2017 to 2021. The removal of a large section of overpainting dating from a later period has profoundly altered the work's appearance and revealed the original composition. To showcase the discovery, the Dresden Gemaldegalerie is now presenting the Girl Reading a Letter along with other masterpieces by Vermeer and a selection of exceptional Dutch genre paintings that reveal parallels and reciprocities between the art of Vermeer and that of his peers. This catalog brings together texts by renowned scholars as they explore not only the restoration of this pivotal work but also fundamental questions on the visual vernacular and essence of Vermeer's painting, his optical realism, his iconography of love, and the lived realities of women in the Dutch Golden Age.
