Book excerpt: A heartfelt, deeply personal book that shines a bright light on the values and principles that Bill Gates Sr. has learned over a lifetime of “showing up”: lessons that he learned growing up during the Great Depression, and that he instilled in his children and continues to practice on the world stage as the co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Through the course of several dozen narratives arranged in roughly chronological fashion, Gates introduces the people and experiences that influenced his thinking and guided his moral compass. Among them: the scoutmaster who taught him about teamwork and self reliance; and his famous son, Trey, whose curiosity and passion for computers and software led him to ultimately co-found Microsoft. Through revealing stories of his daughters, Kristi and Libby; his late wife, Mary, and his current wife, Mimi; and his work with Nelson Mandela and Jimmy Carter, among others, he discusses the importance of hard work, getting along, honoring a confidence, speaking out, and much more. Showing Up for Life translates one man’s experiences over fourscore years of living into an inspiring road map for readers everywhere. As Bill Gates Sr. puts it: "I’m 83 years old. Representing the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and everyone who is a part of it has given me the opportunity to see more of the world and its rich possibilities than most people ever do. I never imagined that I’d be working this late in life, or enjoying it so much."

Book Geek Heresy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kentaro Toyama
  • Publisher : PublicAffairs
  • Release : 2015-05-26
  • ISBN : 1610395298
  • Pages : 353 pages

Download or read book Geek Heresy written by Kentaro Toyama and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2015-05-26 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a decade designing technologies meant to address education, health, and global poverty, award-winning computer scientist Kentaro Toyama came to a difficult conclusion: Even in an age of amazing technology, social progress depends on human changes that gadgets can't deliver. Computers in Bangalore are locked away in dusty cabinets because teachers don't know what to do with them. Mobile phone apps meant to spread hygiene practices in Africa fail to improve health. Executives in Silicon Valley evangelize novel technologies at work even as they send their children to Waldorf schools that ban electronics. And four decades of incredible innovation in America have done nothing to turn the tide of rising poverty and inequality. Why then do we keep hoping that technology will solve our greatest social ills? In this incisive book, Toyama cures us of the manic rhetoric of digital utopians and reinvigorates us with a deeply people-centric view of social change. Contrasting the outlandish claims of tech zealots with stories of people like Patrick Awuah, a Microsoft millionaire who left his engineering job to open Ghana's first liberal arts university, and Tara Sreenivasa, a graduate of a remarkable South Indian school that takes impoverished children into the high-tech offices of Goldman Sachs and Mercedes-Benz, Geek Heresy is a heartwarming reminder that it's human wisdom, not machines, that move our world forward.

Book excerpt: In a book that’s one part prophecy, one part thought experiment, one part manifesto, and one part survival manual, internet impresario and blogging pioneer Jeff Jarvis reverse-engineers Google, the fastest-growing company in history, to discover forty clear and straightforward rules to manage and live by. At the same time, he illuminates the new worldview of the internet generation: how it challenges and destroys—but also opens up—vast new opportunities. His findings are counterintuitive, imaginative, practical, and above all visionary, giving readers a glimpse of how everyone and everything—from corporations to governments, nations to individuals—must evolve in the Google era. What Would Google Do? is an astonishing, mind-opening book that, in the end, is not about Google. It’s about you.

  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book Playing It By Ear written by Clyde R. Forsberg, Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-11-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of All the King’s Horses and All the King’s Men: Love, Alienation, and "Reconciliation” in a Big, BIG Mormon Family (Xlibris, 2000) and the controversial Equal Rites: The Book of Mormon, Masonry, Gender, and American Culture (Columbia University Press, 2004) is at it again. American historian by day and Canadian jazz musician and playwright by night, Clyde R. Forsberg Jr. has also written five original “jazz-musicals.” A word of explanation is required. These five plays, four of which have been tested on stage and not found wanting, do not obey many of the rules of so-called dramaturgy. The playwright has no real right or claim to the office or title of playwright. Having the good fortune to be able to call upon the help of a wide array of extremely talented musicians and actors, he brought forth a relatively new type of theatrical expression and experience—a jazz and theatre synthesis that had an important historical, social justice, intellectual/musical, autobiographical, and monologue angles. Originally, the idea was for a history professor who played jazz to use the stage to convey a message of some historical importance, augmented by music, as an experiment to see whether the theatre was not a better medium than the classroom. There is no doubting the important fact that the public cast their vote . . . and quite decidedly in the affirmative, despite it all. And so, some record and testament to all the hard work that went into each and every one of these plays seems justified. A memoir of another sort, Playing It By Ear: The Jazz-Theatre of Clyde R. Forsberg Jr. explores such public events and social issues as the Canadian ice storm of 1998 and the urban-rural divide in Canadian society that it revealed, Louis Armstrong’s arrangement and interpretation of “Black and Blue” and the relationship between racism and domestic abuse hidden between the lines, the end of the nuclear family and death-rattle of patriarchal authority evident at family holiday gatherings, the degree to which the penis as well as the vagina are taboo, and finally, what Forsberg’s seven-year trek along the Silk Road (2003–2010) in search of self understanding and personal renewal would cost him—but also reward him for venturing outside of the box.
